U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Arnold Miller

DANNEBROG - Arnold Miller, 83, of Dannebrog died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Rev. Robert Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge cemetery at Dannebrog.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Lucy Blake

HOLDREGE - Lucy Ellen Blake, 95, of Holdrege, formerly of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Methodist Memorial Homes in Holdrege.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Fred Roedger will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Methodist Memorial Homes in Holdrege.

Mrs. Blake was born on Nov. 17, 1902, in Sherman County near the old Huxley post office to Herbert and Anna (Kretzschmar) Baker. Shortly after her birth, her mother died.

She was adopted by Nikolai and Margaret Amsberry (Jinks) Petersen. She grew up and attended school on the basin south of Mason City. She later moved and attended school north of Mason City.

She married Walter Francis Blake of Brewster on April 28, 1920. They lived in San Diego and Port Angeles, Wash., for a short time. In 1938, they returned to Brewster, where they ranched and raised Black Angus cattle. Donnie Sloggett came to live with the Blakes in 1952 after the death of his mother, and he was raised as another son.

They retired from the ranch north of Brewster in 1966 and moved to Ainsworth. They later relocated to Broken Bow. Mr. Blake died on May 19, 1978.

Mrs. Blake remained in Broken Bow until March 1990, when she moved to Holdrege to live at Methodist Memorial Homes.

She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Victory Valley Extension Club and delivered Meals on Wheels in Broken Bow.

Survivors include five sons, Herbert Blake of Renton, Wash., Fred Blake of Dannebrog, Dr. Gordon Blake of Doniphan, the Rev. Eugene Blake of Winfield, Kan., and Donald Sloggett of Nyssa, Ore.; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two great-grandsons, two half brothers and two brothers.

Adeline Kaczor

SPENCER - Adeline Kaczor, 71, of Spencer died Tuesday at the Marion Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spencer. The Rev. Jerome Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran cemetery in Spencer.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brockhaus-Thenhaus Funeral Home in Spencer.

Helen Brown

RAPID CITY - Helen E. Brown, 84, of Rapid City, formerly of Broken Bow, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Broken Bow Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and Storybook Island in Rapid City.

Mrs. Brown was born on June 17, 1913, in Oklahoma City to Lyle T. and Ruby Sterling. When she was in high school, the family moved to Broken Bow, where she graduated. She worked in her parents' restaurant and taught dancing lessons.

She married Clifford Brown on Feb. 17, 1937, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Broken Bow, Ord and Grand Island before Mr. Brown enlisted in the military. They were stationed at bases around the Midwest, and he was discharged in 1946.

They returned to Broken Bow, where they started the Broken Bow Country Club. They worked on the golf course during the day and ran the restaurant and lounge in the evenings, where she also taught dance lessons.

They sold the club after three years and were involved in other businesses in the Broken Bow area. Mrs. Brown owned and operated a dance school.

The family moved to Rapid City in 1955 and purchased the Marco Motel, where Mrs. Brown was in charge of housekeeping. They sold the businesses, and she taught at the Lois Martin Dance Studio until the mid-1960s. She had operated the gift shop at the Best Western Town and Country Inn since 1973.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City and a former member of the Broken Bow Does. She was an avid bowler and golfer and loved to dance. The couple spent their retirement winters in southern California and Sun City, Ariz.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Gary Brown of Rapid City; one daughter, Jacque (Mrs. Terry) Sewell of Hermosa, S.D.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one grandson; one sister, Irene Palmer; and one brother, Jack Sterling.

'Hal' Cumming Jr.

Harold G. "Hal" Cumming Jr., 42, of Grand Island, formerly of North Platte, died July 8, 1998, in Grand Island.

Graveside memorial services were July 10 at Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell with military rites by North Platte veterans organizations. The Rev. Thomas Hyde officiated.

Carpenter Funeral Home of North Platte was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cumming was born June 26, 1956, in North Platte to Harold G. Sr. and Dorothy A. (Nielsen) Cumming. He attended North Platte High School.

He entered the U.S. Navy and served until his medical discharge. He worked as a nursing assistant at the North Platte Care Centre until moving to Grand Island in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Michael and Justin Cumming, both of North Platte; one daughter, Tammy Cumming of Halsey; one grandson; five stepchildren, Joe, Teresa, Paul, Thomas and Elizabeth; his parents of North Platte; one brother, William Cumming of Hershey; and two sisters, Vickie Moran of Jefferson City, Mo., and Diana (Mrs. Lyle) Hasselbring of Lexington.

Ann E. Niemoth

Ann E. Niemoth, 88, a resident of Chrysalis Lutheran Homes in Grand Island, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Lakeview Nursing Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. John D. Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Niemoth was born Aug. 28, 1909, in Hyannis to Henry and Louisa Lamm. She went to school and grew up in Howard County.

On Feb. 23, 1934, she married Henry E. Niemoth in Hastings. They farmed north of Grand Island until they retired in 1967 and moved into Grand Island. Mr. Niemoth died on July 27, 1986.

Mrs. Niemoth was an active member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, where she participated in Bible study, quilting and playing cards.

She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn (Mrs. Tom) Smaha of Belvidere, Ill.; two grandsons; four great-grandsons; and a brother, Carl Lamm of Grand Island.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Elmer and Walter.

Floyd Hackett

BURWELL -- Floyd F. Hackett, 82, of Burwell died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God Church in Burwell. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to Assembly of God Church.

Agatha Hinkle

SPALDING -- Agatha R. Hinkle, 83, of Spalding died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael's cemetery in Spalding.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with rosaries at 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.

Mrs. Hinkle was born Aug. 23, 1914, to Leo and Clara (Weber) Pfeifer at her parents' farm. She attended District No. 19 school in Wheeler County and was a secretary and active 4-H member for many years.

She married Leonard Hinkle on Nov. 23, 1932, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding.

She was a member of St. Anne's Altar Society.

Survivors include two sons, Richard and Duane of Spalding; two daughters, Charlotte O'Brien and Linda Hinze, both of Albion; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Pfeifer of Spalding, and four sisters, Mary Ann Ede of Davenport, Iowa, Teresa Kruse of Harlan, Iowa, Carol Kershaw of Spalding and Clara Smith of Ericson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and five brothers.
