U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Clara Garrison

FREMONT -- Clara C. Garrison, 94, of Fremont, formerly of Grand Island, died on Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at the Fremont Care Center.

Services are pending with Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont.

Herman Ott

Marianna, Fla. -- Herman Ott, 67, of Marianna, Fla., formerly of Giltner, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, in Marianna.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Giltner Cemetery. The Rev. Dwight DeLate will officiate. Higby Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ott was born on Sept. 30, 1931, in Henderson to Henry and Katie (Pankratz) Ott. He grew up and was educated in Henderson and Aurora. He lived in Giltner and later moved to Colorado, where he worked for molybdenum mining companies. He retired in Florida in 1986.

Survivors include five sons, Richard Ott of Manchester, Conn., Allen Ott of Brigham, Utah, James Ott of Virginia City, Va., Herb Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jerry Johnson of Compass Lake, Fla.; three daughters, Debra Wamsley of Mason, Ohio, Pamala Henney of Houston and LaWanda Scott of Marianna, Fla.; numerous grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Wilbur Ott of Giltner and Freeman Ott of Trumbull; and two sisters, Erma Claire of Los Angeles and Frieda Dunlap of Blountstown, Fla.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, three brothers and one sister.

Viva M. Engel

Viva M. Engel, 91, of Grand Island died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Tiffany Square Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Jocelyn B. Tupper will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Wood River Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Engel was born on March 21, 1906, to Paul and Emma (Huff) Engel in Hastings. She grew up and attended school in Wood River. In 1924, she graduated from Wood River High School. She furthered her education at Hastings College, graduating in 1928. She did her graduate work at the University of Nebraska, the University of Denver and at Columbia University in New York City.

She taught Latin and history in Nebraska for several years. She was a librarian at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue and was a librarian at the Omaha Public Library at Omaha.

She was a member of the Methodist faith and belonged to a Methodist church in each of the cities she lived in. She was also a former Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for key women teachers, the American Association of University Women, the Nebraska State Teachers Association and the National Teachers Association.

She is survived by several cousins.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Ruth Engel on Oct. 18, 1990.

Gregg Fate

HASTINGS -- Greggory D. Fate, 32, of Hastings died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings, with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to his children.

Mr. Fate was born on July 11, 1965, in Austin, Texas, to Leonard L. and Deanna (Hickman) Fate. He attended grade school in Hutto, Texas, before moving to Clay Center in 1976. He graduated from Clay Center High School in 1983. He attended Kearney State College and graduated from Central Community College in Hastings in 1987 with an associate's degree in broadcasting.

He married Trisha L. Jelden on May 2, 1992, in Hildreth. He worked for RPS in Grand Island.

He was a member of Clay Center Christian Church, the American Softball Association and the American Softball Association Umpire Association.

Survivors include his wife, Trisha of Hastings; two sons, Tanner and Tyson; his parents, Leonard and Dee Fate of Georgetown, Texas; one brother, Gary Fate of Orlando, Fla.; his grandmother and step grandfather, Gertie and Art Harris of Biloxi, Miss.; and his grandfather and step grandmother, John B. and Ann Hickman of Georgetown, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a grandfather and a grandmother.

William Skolil

SARGENT -- William "Bill" Skolil, 85, of Sargent died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Goli Medical Center in Sargent.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Samm Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the National cemetery west of Ord.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Sargent.

Mr. Skolil was born on June 6, 1912, in Valley County to James and Emma (Kokes) Skolil. He attended rural schools.

He married Phyllis Probert in Sidney on Feb. 15, 1930. They lived in the Sargent and Comstock area. He moved into Sargent in 1968 and retired in 1976. He was a farmer.

He was a member of Western Fraternal Lodge No. 112 of Comstock for 63 years. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Sargent.

His wife died in 1978. He suffered a stroke in 1995 and lived at home until November 1997, when he moved to the Sargent Nursing Center. He entered Goli Medical Center in January.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley (Mrs. Edwin) Chalupa of Sargent; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rose Kocourek of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant grandson and two half-sisters, Norma Hunt and Evelyn Kriss.

Vene Tucker

LOUP CITY -- Vene C. Tucker, 89, of Loup City died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.

Memorials are suggested to the church, Rose Lane Home or the donor's choice.

Mr. Tucker was born June 25, 1908, in Hamilton County to George W. and Margaret (Shannon) Tucker. When he was 1 year old, the family moved to Sherman County. He attended District No. 35 school. Upon completing his education, he farmed with his father.

He married Alice Daddow on Jan. 9, 1929, at her parents' home near Loup City. The couple farmed at various locations west of Loup City until 1934, when they moved to Loup City.

He started Loup City's first Dray and Freight Service, first with mules and wagons and later trucks. This expanded to a fleet of trucks and semi trucks that provided long-distance grain and livestock market delivery. In 1952, he sold the business to Loup Valley Transfer and began a milk route service from area dairies into Roberts Dairy of Grand Island.

In 1973, he retired from trucking and worked part time for Loup City Livestock Auction. At age 70, he began working full time as a maintenance man for West Side Housing for the next five years. Mrs. Tucker died on July 16, 1983.

He married Evelyn Gallaway on March 9, 1986, in Loup City. The couple lived in Loup City.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Loup City, former Loup City volunteer firefighter, Loup City Saddle Club and active in Senior Center activities. He and his wife, Evelyn, were 1993 Senior Center King and Queen.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lloyd W. of Farmington, N.M., and Jerry V. of New Canaan, Conn.; three daughters, Janet (Mrs. Steve) Tenski of Farmington, N.M., Bonnie (Mrs. Howard) Harrington of Ogallala and Jacquelyn (Mrs. Mike) Nichols of Livermore, Calif.; two stepsons, Darwin Gallaway of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Marvin Gallaway of Loup City; one step-daughter, Donna (Mrs. Dennis) Krolikowski of Loup City; 10 grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alma (Mrs. Bill) McBeth of Beaverton, Ore. and Dorothy Worrell of Boise, Idaho.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Hugh.

Margaret Watson

PALMER -- Margaret Ellen Watson, 81, of Palmer died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at her home.

Services are pending with Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.
