U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

'Buck' Conner

ORD -- Walter "Buck" Conner, 84, of Ord died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at the Corner Cottage in Ord.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Conner was born on March 11, 1914, at Ord to John and Anna (Kuehl) Conner. He was raised on a farm and attended school near Ord.

He married Victoria Greenwalt Benda in 1954. The couple farmed in Valley County for 50 years. They moved into Ord in 1976, and Mr. Conner continued to farm part time. The couple recently became residents of the Corner Cottage in Ord.

He had been a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church since 1954 and was a member of the Ord Elks Lodge. For 12 winters, the couple traveled to Truth of Consequences, N.M., and Texas. When he was younger, he enjoyed roller-skating. His hobbies were playing cards and fishing.

Survivors include his wife.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Willard Robert Conner.

'Eileen' Kurtenbach

GREELEY -- Helen "Eileen" Kurtenbach, 75, of Greeley died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Grand Island.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Greeley.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with rosaries at 4 and 7:30 p.m., Sunday at the church.

T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dean Hinkson

SEDALIA, Mo. -- Dean Hinkson, 94, of Sedalia, Mo., formerly of Cairo, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Fair View Nursing Home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Heckart-Gillespie Colonial Chapel in Sedalia. The Rev. Ina Gunther will officiate.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cameron cemetery in Cairo. The Rev. Allan Davis will officiate with Cairo Lodge 324 conducting Masonic services.

Visitation will be after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Shriners' Children's Hospitals.

Mr. Hinkson was born on April 11, 1904, in Cairo to Preston and Arendse (Dehn) Hinkson.

He married Florence Mecham on Dec. 28, 1933, in Grand Island. She died on Nov. 30, 1980. He was a farmer and stockman in Texas, Nebraska and Arizona. He lived in Willcox, Ariz., for 24 years before moving to Sedalia in 1988.

He was a member of the New Bethel United Methodist Church in Sedalia and Cairo Lodge 324 and was first worthy patron of Cairo Order of the Eastern Star and Dorothy Chapter 322, both in Cairo.

Survivors include two son, Leon Hinkson of Eldridge, Mo., and Dale Hinkson of Bremond, Texas; two daughters, Alice Hendrickson of Sedalia and Sally Quick of Rogersville, Mo.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Hinkson of Muleshoe, Texas, and Keith Hinkson and Preston Hinkson, both of Cairo; and two sisters, Alice McKeag of Richmond, Calif., and Helen Larson of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh Hinkson and Everett Hinkson.

Lela Boroff

Lela M. Boroff, 87, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Roger Harms will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview cemetery near Doniphan.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Boroff was born on March 11, 1911, at Ruskin to Frank and Leva Styles. Her mother died when she was 9 years old. Her father married Alice Burke. She grew up and was educated in the Kearney area.

She married Merton Boroff on Sept. 26, 1928. The couple lived in the Doniphan area before moving to Wood River in 1947. Over the years, she was a chef at many well-known restaurants in the area.

She enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include two sons, James Boroff of Wood River and Jack Boroff of Whetherford, Texas; four daughters, Kay Rieken and Carol Vejvoda, both of Grand Island, Kaffie (Mrs. Tom) Albers of Coalville, Utah, and Karen (Mrs. John) Scott of Lincoln; 28 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Audrey (Mrs. Dick) Davis of Grand Island and Thelma Morris of Superior.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Leva (Mrs. Henry) Aufdenkamp of Kenesaw; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

'Jimmy' Carrozzo

Vincent N. "Jimmy" Carrozzo, 75, of 13 St. James Place died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Carrozzo was born on March 16, 1923, at Corona, N.Y., to Pasqual and Madaline Carrozzo. He grew up and was educated in Queens, N.Y. He learned the plumbing trade at the Institute of Technology in New York.

He entered the U.S. Army in January 1942 and served in the Office of Strategic Services in China, Burma and India until his discharge in 1946.

He married Bernice Tarbutton on March 16, 1946, at Elmhurst, N.Y. They lived in New York for 38 years, and he worked as a plumber. The couple retired to Grand Island in 1983.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1347.

Survivors include his wife; and two sisters, Philomina Moglia of New York and Rose Totino of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

William Ferguson

William C. Ferguson, 73, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Red Cross or the family's choice.

Mr. Ferguson was born on April 12, 1925, in Niobrara to William and Mary (Conklin) Ferguson. He was educated in Niobrara and graduated from Niobrara High School in 1943.

He entered the U.S. Army on July 29, 1943, at Fort Crook. He was stationed at Camp Haan, Calif., Fort Benning, Ga., Fort Mead, Md., and then went overseas in February 1944. He went through France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. He was discharged on April 19, 1946.

He attended Wayne State College in 1946 and graduated from the Grand island Business College on Dec. 2, 1948.

He married Elva Basnett in 1948 in Grand Island. While in school, Mr. Ferguson worked at Glade Service, Rapid Film and Dixey Cream Donuts. He then took a correspondence course from LaSalle University. He then worked for Myers Jewelers; Richard Lockwood, certified public accountant; and Haile Construction. He received his CPA certificate on July 31, 1957. He then went into business for himself as W.C. Ferguson, CPA.

He was president of the Grand Island Lions Club in 1970-71. He was an extensive world traveler and longtime, avid Nebraska Big Red fan.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, where he was the longtime treasurer; a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion, Liederkranz and Elks Club.

Survivors include one son, Doug Ferguson of Grand Island; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edward of Niobrara, Marvin of Ashland, Ore., and Everett of Bellflower, Calif.; and two sisters, Mildred Petty of Parker, Kan., and Genevieve Kent of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by one son, David; and one brother, Ralph.
