U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Marvin Schmale

Marvin H. Schmale, 70, of Park Place Nursing Center died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Park Place.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Gretchen Diers will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the church or ARS Society.

Mr. Schmale was born March 9, 1928, to Herman and Alvina (Nietfeldt) Schmale near Phillips in Hall County. He attended rural schools and graduated from Phillips High School in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Army until he was discharged in 1946.

He married Lucille (Gimple) Braune on Jan. 9, 1957 in Hastings. The couple lived in Grand Island. He farmed with his father until 1957, when he farmed on his own until he retired in 1990. She died in November 1998.

He was a lifelong member of Messiah Lutheran Church, 50-year member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 378 of Grand Island and the Platt-Duetsche.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harry; and one sister, Evelyn Dibbern.

Anna Bartu

ORD -- Anna Bartu, 97, of Ord died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at her home in Ord.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School or the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bartu was born Aug. 9, 1901, to James and Pauline (Pierszalska) Wozniak at Chamberlain, S.D. When she was 2, the family moved to Valley County. She was educated in Valley County and became a teacher. She had taken classes from the St. Paul Business School, the University of Nebraska and the University of Colorado. She began her teaching career in rural Valley County Schools.

She married August Bartu on Aug. 31, 1927. They lived on a farm east of Comstock and she began teaching at the St. Mary's school. She taught school for more than 30 years. Mr. Bartu died May 21, 1985. She continued to live in Ord until her death.

She was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and was a charter member of the WFLA Lodge No. 112. She was a member of the St. Anne's Study Club and Altar Society.

Survivors include two sisters, Viola Howarter of Ord and Marguerite Swanson of Ord.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Wozniak, Frank Wozniak and Cash Wozniak; six sisters, Fern Wozniak, Maxine Edwards, Vonda Boulay, Josie Wozniak, Sophia Thies and Laura Comstock.

Ellen Curren

ALBION -- Ellen F. Curren, 97, of Albion died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at the Clay County Medical Center in Clay Center, Kan.

Services are pending with the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Ella Dieckmann

AURORA -- Ella Dieckmann, 84, of Aurora died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Aurora United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mrs. Dieckmann was born May 4, 1914, to James E. and Dorcas (Peck) Rains in Wolbach. She attended rural schools and graduated from Giltner High School in 1931.

She married Clarence (Hap) Dieckmann on Feb. 24, 1937, in Grand Island. They lived on a farm east of Giltner for 23 years before moving to Aurora in 1960. She worked at the Farmers Union Creamery in Aurora until its close. She then clerked and J.M. McDonalds Department Store for seven and a half years and was a receptionist at Design Studio for five years. She also did professional wallpapering part-time for more than 30 years.

Mr. Dieckmann preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1972.

She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church. She liked to travel and enjoyed cooking, crocheting and camping.

Survivors include her daughter, Connie (Mrs. Rich) Meyer of Aurora; two grandsons; one step granddaughter; four great-granddaughters; four sisters, Alice (Mrs. Bud) Plant of Aurora, Edith (Mrs. Wally) Brenning of Lincoln, Gracie (Mrs. Col. James C.) Mitchell of Las Vegas and Mabel (Mrs. Neil) Ruebsamen of Grand Island; and one brother, John Rains of Columbus.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clyde and two sisters, Minnie Graf and Ruth Humrich.

Mildred Hammel

AURORA -- Mildred Hammel, 76, of Aurora died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at her home in Aurora.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Aurora Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Jim Garfield officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Florence Nekoliczak

ST. PAUL -- Florence Nekoliczak, 80, of St. Paul died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Revs. Michael McDermott and Ted Nekoliczak will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Monday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to Masses or the family's choice.

She was born on Aug. 8, 1918, at Cicero, Ill., to John and Josephine (Borowiak) Chrobel. She grew up in Cicero and attended Columbus Elementary School and Morton High School. She graduated from Morton High School in 1936. Upon completing her education, she began working as a secretary for Sears-Roebuck, later working for the federal government as a secretary during World War II.

She married Edward Nekoliczak on May 1, 1948, at Cicero. The couple lived in Cicero until 1976, when they moved to Rockford, Ill. In 1981, the couple retired and moved to St. Paul, spending many winters in Arizona. She enjoyed dancing and visiting with friends.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Eagles Aerie No. 378 of Grand Island and the Moose Lodge of Cicero.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Donald Nekoliczak of Chicago and John Nekoliczak of Korea; two daughters, Janet Plesniak of Tucson, Ariz., and Diane (Mrs. William) Maher of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lil Robak of Elkgrove, Ill.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Schultz; and one son, Wayne Nekoliczak.

Dillo Troyer

ORD -- Dillo Troyer, 97, of Ord died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Revs. Jim Warner and Stanley Gorak will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Home Health or to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Troyer was born Feb. 18, 1901, to Nicholas and Udella (Beeb) Troyer in a sod house in Custer County near Callaway. He attended schools at Pine Canyon, 12 miles northwest of Callaway. He then went to electrical school and business college in Denver, Colo. for three years. He worked as an automotive electrician for many years. He moved to Ord in 1930 and bought the Texaco station.

He married Alyce Marie Novotny on Nov. 23, 1936. He worked for both the local Ford and Chevrolet dealerships. After World War II, he opened an appliance store in Ord and operated it until 1954. He then went to the Ord light plant as an operating engineer until he retired in 1966. He continued to service appliances until he was 93.

He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, one of the founding members of the Ord Elks Lodge and a past president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the building committee for both St. Mary's school and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church when they were built.

Survivors include two children, Alan Troyer of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Beth Parker of Ord; two grandchildren; a sister, Anna Nelson and a brother, Maurice Troyer.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 24, 1994, and three brothers, Jake, Glenn and James.

Cody Holdeman

BULL HEAD CITY, Ariz. -- Cody Ray Mustard Holdeman, infant son of Jacque Mustard and Ernie Holdeman of Bull Head City, Ariz., died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, shortly after his birth.

Family graveside services took place on Saturday at Central City Cemetery. Lay Minister Tom Wagner officiated.

Survivors include his parents; three grandparents, Bob and Millie Mustard of Central City and Mildred Holdeman of Muskogee, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ervin Holdeman.
