Dorothy Selden

DANNEBROG -- Dorothy M. Selden, 88, of Dannebrog died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peder's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nysted. The Rev. Donald Voorhees will officiate. Burial will be in the Loup Fork cemetery near Boelus.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Selden was born on Aug. 8, 1910, on the family farm west of Dannebrog to John and Amanda (Lemburg) Jacobsen. She was educated at the Dry Creek School west of Dannebrog. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Boelus High School.

She attended Kearney State Teachers College and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for five semesters. She taught school for 21 years, starting in 1925. She taught in Howard County Rural Schools and at the Rising City Public School for one year.

She married Chalmar Selden on June 24, 1926, at Dannebrog. The couple first lived at Rising City, where they farmed. They moved in 1949 to Howard County to the Nysted area, where they farmed. She taught school in Howard and Hall counties from 1957 until her retirement. The couple lived on the family farm throughout their marriage.

Mr. Selden died on Sept. 29, 1996. Mrs. Selden continued to live on the farm.

She was a member of St. Peder's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Nysted and a rock hound. She loved painting and cats.

Survivors include three sons, Paul of Broomfield, Colo., and Robert and Danny, both of Dannebrog; two daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Gary) Christensen of Dannebrog and Sharon (Mrs. Donald) Miller of Warrensburg, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and three sisters, Mildred Rohlfing of Alma, Thelma Andersen of Grand Island and Edna Elvers of Fredricksburg, Va.

Ramona Vlach

COTESFIELD - Ramona J. Vlach, 70, of Cotesfield died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Martha Voigt will officiate. Burial will be in the Cotesfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church in Cotesfield or the Polysystic Kidney Foundation.

Mrs. Vlach was born on Aug. 15, 1928, in Scotia to Elmer and Gladys (Meyer) Meyer. She grew up and attended schools in Scotia and graduated from Scotia High School in 1945. She taught school for one year each in Cotesfield and Dannebrog.

She married Leonard Vlach on June 8, 1947, at Fishcreek Church east of Scotia. They lived on a farm west of Cotesfield until 1977, then moved to a farm north of Cotesfield.

Mrs. Vlach was active as a 4-H leader, was a member of the United Methodist Church of Cotesfield, the County Extension Club, Scotia Legion Auxiliary and ZCBJ Lodge in Ord. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and flowers.

Survivors include her husband; son, Robert Vlach of Encinitas, Calif.; two daughters, Susanne (Mrs. Doug) Milbourn of Columbus and Carmen (Mrs. Rod) Ostrander of Ord; and one sister, Eleanor (Mrs. Frankie) Moravec of Cotesfield.

Daniel Johansen

CHAMBERS - Daniel "Dan" Ralph Johansen, 52, of Chambers died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill. The Rev. George Welsh will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Eaton Township cemetery at Heartwell.

William Keck Sr.

NORTH PLATTE - William Charles Keck Sr., 71, of North Platte, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, due to complications from cancer and pneumonia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Revs. Gary Brethour and R.L. Piontkowski will officiate. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Adams-Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte. Further visitation will be prior to service time Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Keck was born on Jan. 3, 1927, in Valparaiso to Thomas William and Barbara (Zetocha) Keck. He moved with the family to Grand Island in 1933 and attended Barr Junior High and Senior High School.

He married Shirley Ann Blair on Feb. 14, 1944, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island.

He worked at Gates Tire and Recap and Fairmont Creamery before hiring out with the Union Pacific Railroad in April 1945. He was a switchman and brakeman in Grand Island. He transferred to Columbus in 1946 and back to Grand Island in 1959. He transferred to North Platte in 1972.

He was a fourth-generation Union Pacific railroader. He worked for the railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1988. He served on the 2nd District. Upon retirement, he and his son Kenny started Keck's Sharpening Service in North Platte.

He was a longtime member of the Eagles Club, Moose Lodge, American Legion and United Transportation Union Local 286. He was also a past member of the Knights of Columbus.

He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church for many years and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish. He loved fishing, gardening and carpentry and was a Nebraska Cornhusker fan.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Bonnie JoAnn Tilford, Kathleen Ann Buck and Dorothy Marie, all of North Platte; seven sons, Bill Jr. of Omaha, Allan of Lincoln, Steve, Kenny and Keven, all of North Platte, Edward of Manhattan, Kan., and Dick of Kearney; 31 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Camelia Joy Robertson of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, two sisters and a brother.

Larry Schaad

COLUMBUS - Larry Schaad, 52, of Columbus died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Services were on Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, with the Rev. Timothy White officiating. Burial was in the Creston Pioneer Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schaad was born on June 26, 1946, in Columbus to Hilger and Florice (Jenny) Schaad. He graduated from Humphrey High School in 1964.

He married Sally Wieser on Apr. 23, 1966.

He married Janet Kmoch on May 4, 1973.

Mr. Schaad worked at Columbus Skelgas and most recently had been a custodian for Columbus Public Schools. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam (Mrs. Dave) Paczosa of Duncan and Jenni (Mrs. Jess) Zegars of Columbus; one son, Brian Schaad of Columbus; three grandchildren; his parents, of Columbus; two brothers Lonny Schaad of Columbus and Roger Schaad of Leigh; and two sisters, Marilyn (Mrs. Dennis) Hellbusch of Fullerton and Janet (Mrs. Marv) Janssen of Columbus.

Evaleen Schritt

Evaleen E. Schritt, 78, of Grand Island died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Mattie Chipps

LOUP CITY -- Mattie S. Chipps, 94, of Loup City died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen cemetery in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Loup City.

Mrs. Chipps born July 10, 1904, at Pleasanton to Walter and Bertha (Krotz) Hughes. She was raised in Pleasanton and attended school there.

She married Paul E. Chipps in November 1920 at Pleasanton. In their early marriage, the couple lived on a farm south of Litchfield. They later moved into Litchfield, where they owned an International Harvester store. In 1950, they moved to Loup City, when Mr. Chipps was elected Sherman County treasurer.

He died Oct. 26, 1962. She continued to live in her home until July 1988, when she entered Rose Lane Home.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was recently honored as a 75-year member. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Litchfield and Loup City and had served as past worthy matron.

She enjoyed flowers, sewing, arts and cooking.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Vivian Chipps of Loup City; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Royce Chipps; two brothers, Ralph and Glen Hughes; and five sisters, Myrtle Ahrens, Grace Herrera, Mabel Logrhy, Hazel Douglas and Alma Rasmussen.
