U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

'Linda' Gordon

Mary "Linda" Gordon, 52, of 2821 Brentwood Blvd. died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Charles cemetery at St. Mary, Ky.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m., Friday at Kleine Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Gordon was born on Sept. 7, 1945, at Lebanon, Ky., to J. Tom and Louise (Hourigan) O'Daniel. She grew up and was educated in Kentucky, graduating from St. Charles High School in St. Mary, Ky., in 1963. She lived in Lexington, Ky., and Denver before moving to Grand Island in 1977.

She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for several businesses in the area.

She married Douglas Gordon on Aug. 7, 1992, at Grand Island.

She enjoyed golfing and interior decorating. She was a past member of St. Mary's Cathedral.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Thomas and Mark Mattingly, both of San Diego, Glenn Mattingly of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jeff Mattingly of Lincoln; one grandson; six brothers, Ray, Bernie and Eddie O'Daniel, all of Louisville, Ky., and Ignatius, Tommy Ray and Bobby O'Daniel, all of St. Mary, Ky.; and two sisters, Rita Beaven of St. Mary, Ky., and Peggy Jenkins of Brandenburg, Ky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gerald.

Gerard Micek

ST. EDWARD -- Gerard "Gardy" Micek, 68, of St. Edward died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward's Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Gill will officiate. Burial will be in St. Edward's Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward. Visitation will continue at 7 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, at the church. Further visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Micek was born on Sept. 24, 1929, at Fullerton to Joseph K. and Helen (Uzendoski) Micek. He attended a country school in the North Star area west of Fullerton and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1946.

He married Margaret Prorok on May 30, 1955, at St. Edward's Catholic Church. They lived in Omaha until 1957, when they moved to St. Edward. Mr. Micek farmed and later worked in steel construction for Behlen Manufacturing. He was a co-owner of Monroe Construction, then worked at B-D Construction in Columbus until retiring in 1994.

He was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 7825, which he served as grand knight.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Chuck of Pierce, Casey and Clifford, both of St. Edward, and Chad of Kearney; three daughters, Dr. Connie Micek, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy stationed in Diego Garcia, and Cary (Mrs. Kevin) Cromwell and Cindy (Mrs. John) Koziol, both of Genoa; 10 grandchildren; six brothers, Joe of Omaha, Ned and Albert, both of Fullerton, Ted of Shelby and Jack and Ray, both of Grand Island; and four sisters, Bernice (Mrs. Sylvester) Starzec of Columbus, Theresa (Mrs. Leonard) Harms of Dodge, Loretta Schuyler of Cairo and Geraldine (Mrs. Ray) Wrzenkie of St. Paul.

He was preceded in death by an infant grandson.

Bonnie Neff

LEXINGTON -- Bonnie J. Neff, 57, of Lexington died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Lexington. The Rev. Tom Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Mrs. Neff was born on Feb. 23, 1941, at Cambridge to Earle and Pauline (Coleman) Collicott. The family moved to Lexington in February 1947. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1958.

She married Zickie Maloley in January 1959 at Lexington.

She married Gary Neff on July 4, 1997, at Lexington.

She worked at Lexington Middle School for the past 15 years. Prior to that, she worked for Maloley Grocery Store.

She liked to golf, play tennis, walk and keep active. She attended basketball games in which her boys participated. She also liked to travel and enjoyed time at the lake.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Mike Maloley of Lexington and Monte Maloley of Omaha; two daughters, Michele (Mrs. Fred) Day of Omaha and Melinda (Mrs. Jim) Powers of Grand Island; two stepsons, Mike Neff of Boise, Idaho, and Donald Neff of Dover, Del.; seven grandchildren; her mother, Pauline Dodson of Lexington; one sister, Shirley (Mrs. Dan) Wolfe of Johnson Lake; three stepsisters, Beverly Thompson of Yuma, Ariz., Bonnie DeFruiter of Jasper, Ala., and Jackie Ewald of Greeley, Colo.; one half brother, Dick Collicott of Culbertson; and one half sister, Carol Blankenship of McCook.

She was preceded in death by her father and her stepfather, Delmar Dodson.

Esther Smith

CANTERBURY, Conn. -- Esther Ann Smith, 74, of Canterbury, Conn., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Conn., after a long illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Occum, Conn.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Narusiewicz-Woyaz Funeral Home in Norwich, Conn.

Memorials are suggested to Connecticut Hospice.

Mrs. Smith was born on April 8, 1924, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Walter and Nell (Sullivan) Schoeneberg. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island.

She married Robert J. Smith on Feb. 24, 1945, at the Grand Island Army Air Force Base. The couple lived in the Gales Ferry-Norwich area for many years and retired to Canterbury in 1983.

She was a homemaker, a talented seamstress and an avid bird-watcher. She was a member of the Mothers Circle of Wallingford, Conn., for 40 years and a former volunteer at the Norwich State Hospital.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Occum.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Michael Smith of Wellington, Fla.; one daughter, Cynthia Howarth of Canterbury; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Jones of Nampa, Idaho, and Katherine Lowry of Tavares, Fla.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and William Schoeneberg.

Alma Staatz

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Alma Dawkins Staatz, 89, of Great Falls, Mont., formerly of Aurora, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in Great Falls.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hampton Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Higby Mortuary of Aurora is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Staatz was born on Jan. 15, 1909, at Battle Creek, Iowa, to Christopher and Olga (Rosenlocher) Weifenbach.

She was a baker at the Aurora Bakery and worked as a cook at the old SYA Cafe and Wortman's Cafe in Aurora. During World War II, she and her husband, Willis Dawkins, worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island and the Naval Ammunition Plant in Hastings. She moved to Great Falls, Mont., in 1960, worked for the Police Department and retired as a meter maid.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Staatz; two sons, Bill Dawkins of Brush, Colo., and Robert Dawkins of Grand Island; two daughters, Deloris Reed of Albion and Donna (Mrs. Jim) Kolor of Salem, Ore.; 29 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Alfred and Henry Weifenbach of Mapleton, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by one son, Duane; five brothers; and five sisters.

George Daberco

George H. Daberco, 93, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at the Skilled Care Unit of St. Francis Medical Center.

Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Jeanie Groelz

Jeanie L. Groelz, 83, of the Grand Island Veterans Home, formerly of Phillips, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Chapel at veterans home. The Rev. Tim Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the chapel. Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the occupational therapy program at the home.

Mrs. Groelz was born on Feb. 11, 1915, at rural Giltner to Philip and Jessie (Case) Carter. She was educated at Case Country School and graduated from Giltner High School. She attended Hastings College. She received a correspondence degree in art.

She married Byron E. Groelz on Nov. 23, 1941, at Giltner. They lived in rural Giltner until March 1957, when they moved to Phillips. She helped on the family farm until 1965.

She worked as an assistant cook at Aurora Memorial Hospital and later worked on the production line and served as the union steward at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. She was a partner with her husband in their repair business, Groelz Repair, in Phillips. Mr. Groelz died on Jan. 15, 1986.

Mrs. Groelz completed a home companion care certification program at Central Community College-Grand Island Campus. Following her husband's death, she lived with her daughter at Dannebrog until moving to the Grand Island Veterans Home in 1995.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed gardening and painting.

Survivors include four sons, Philip of Canby, Ore., Jay and Ned, both of Phillips, and Ross of South Lake Tahoe, Nev.; and two daughters, Janet Groelz of Dannebrog and Jean Groelz of Kansas City, Kan.
