U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Hubert Mittan

ALDA -- Hubert E. Mittan, 84, of Alda died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Michael W. Cole will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Cedar Lawn cemetery at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Rev. Lowell Knause will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Mittan was born on Sept. 26, 1913, at Hebron to Jess and Grace (Dain) Mittan. He grew up and was educated in Hebron.

He married Mabel Tellier in 1933.

He later married Della Sharp in Missouri. They lived in the Grand Island area through most of their marriage. Mr. Mittan was a mechanic with the Civil Service. He retired in 1971. Mrs. Mittan died on June 1, 1993.

Mr. Mittan was a member of Eagles Aerie 378. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working outdoors.

Survivors include two sons, Lonny Mittan of Alda and Hubert E. Mittan Jr. of Washington; two daughters, Carolyn Dilly of Denver and Margaret Speaher of Milford, Iowa; one stepdaughter, Sondra Dorsett of Council Bluffs; one stepson, Robert Sharp of Fort Worth, Texas; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; five brothers, Jim Mittan of Alabama, Gordon Mittan and Dick Mittan, both of Denver, Melvin Mittan of Tilden and Tom Mittan of Broken Bow; and three sisters, Helen Barger of Omaha, Grace Brochoft of Denver and Lois Stillwalt of Superior.

He was preceded in death by three daughters, Mary Ann, Mabel Grace and Susan Marie; one stepdaughter, Elaine Moss; one sister, Frieda Torring; and two brothers, Don and Rusty Mittan.

Audra Shively

CLARKS -- Audra M. Shively, 31, of Clarks died Monday, April 13, 1998, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Tim Travers will officiate. Burial will be in Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.

Mrs. Shively was born on Feb. 14, 1967, at Grand Island to Duane and Myrna (Boardman) Beed. She lived in Alda until May 1979, when she moved with her family to Fullerton. She attended elementary schools in Alda and District 55 in Nance County and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1985.

She married Carl Shively on June 15, 1985, at Fullerton. They lived in Fullerton until 1988, when they moved to Clarks.

She had worked at Country Corner in Clarks.

She enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Anthony and Calvin, both at home; her parents, of Fullerton; two sisters, Chris (Mrs. Tom) Rice of Aurora and Celeste Beed of Fullerton; three brothers, Duane of Aurora, Marvin of Fullerton and Kurt Whitford of Cincinnati; and two grandmothers, Mary Boardman of Fullerton and Fern Beed of Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her two grandfathers, Marvin Boardman and Charles Beed.

Laura Sutko

SILVER CREEK -- Laura Sutko, 87, of Silver Creek died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday St. Lawrence's Catholic Church in Silver Creek. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service. Further visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

McKown Funeral Home of Silver Creek is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on June 20, 1910, at Duncan to George and Anna (Gembica) Sutko. She attended a rural county school.

She worked and lived on the family farm. Later she worked at Becton-Dickinson in Columbus.

She was a member of St. Lawrence's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed music and playing cards.

Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Dush of Clarks and Alice Kolanowski and Leona Metzger, both of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by one infant sister and two brothers, Adolph and Louis Sutko.

Leota Cumming

Pilger -- Leota Alice Cumming, 61, of Pilger, formerly of Osceola, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward with the Rev. Eric Biehl officiating. A private family burial will be later in the Boone Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cumming was born on April 18, 1936, on her grandparents' farm in Boone County to Ben and Frances (Nygren) Parks. She attended elementary and high school in St. Edward.

She married Earl Elwin "Pete" Cumming on Oct. 14, 1953, at Glenwood, Iowa. They lived and farmed south of St. Edward. She worked as a telephone operator in the 1960s. The couple later moved to Genoa, where they owned and operated a dry-cleaning business. She worked as a seamstress there.

They then moved south of Fremont to Colon, and she worked at J.P. Originals of Elkhorn as a wedding gown seamstress. They moved to Osceola, and she worked at Jackson Cleaners in Columbus and attended Platte College. Her husband died on Aug. 14, 1996.

She moved to Pilger in July 1997 and was attending Wayne State College at the time of her death.

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn (Mrs. Earl) Warnick and Shannon (Mrs. Jim) Warnick, both of Columbus; two sons, Cody Cumming of Spalding and Kelly Cumming of Dannebrog; five grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild; her mother, Frances Wieland, and stepfather, Harold Wieland, both of Fremont; one brother, Benny Parks of Las Vegas; two stepsisters, Terry (Mrs. Clinton) Warnke of Stanton and Judy Wieland of Fremont; and one stepbrother, James Wieland of Norfolk.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her father.

Henry Jones

LINCOLN -- Henry I. Jones, 91, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, in Milford.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Rutten will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the donor's choice.

Mr. Jones was born on Nov. 9, 1906, at Pauline to Thomas and Alice Jones.

He was a former manager of Firestone Tire Co. in Grand Island and a former owner of Jones Tire Co. in Broken Bow. He had also been a ticket agent for Continental Trailways.

Survivors include two sons, Myron Jones of Berthoud, Colo., and Donald Jones of Lincoln; one daughter, Lolita (Mrs. Jerome) Weiss of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; two brothers, Mervyn and Ellis Jones; and one sister, Florence Adams.

Dorothy Vaclavek

NEBRASKA CITY -- Dorothy E. Vaclavek, 81, of Nebraska City, formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate.

There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Vaclavek was born on Nov. 9, 1916, at Schuyler to Edmund and Helen (Adkisson) Wynne. She graduated from Fullerton High School in 1934 and attended Grand Island Business College and at a business college in Denver.

She married Emil Vaclavek on Jan. 30, 1937, at Loup City. She worked with her husband at H&H; Liquor during the winters. During the summers, the couple operated Otter Creek Resort at Lake McConaughy for 24 years until retiring in 1974. Mr. Vaclavek died on July 4, 1993.

Mrs. Vaclavek was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the church Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, 40 and Eight and church circles. She volunteered at the Red Cross for 12 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Jim) Callen of Nebraska City; one son, Karl Vaclavek of Arvada, Colo.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother, W.H. Wynne of Pennsylvania.
