Roxanna Elias Podhaisky
Roxanna Elias Podhaisky passed away April 1, 2016 at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
“Roxie” was born Nov. 21, 1930 in Lawrence, KS to parents Maxim and Helen Elias. They moved to Lincoln, NE in the 1940s, and Roxie eventually attended the University of Nebraska where she was a cheerleader, and voted 4-19 16 PodhaiskyNebraska Sweetheart in 1949. It was there she met Tom Podhaisky, who became her husband in 1950. Needless to say, they were lifelong Cornhusker fans. Roxie was the quintessential mother, and made it her mission in life to raise eight children in the small town of Alliance, NE. In addition to her duties as “Mom,” she was also an artist, specializing in oil paintings, and skillful administrator both at home and, when the kids finally left home, at the family business, Podhaisky Insurance and Real Estate. Along with Tom, she enjoyed her many visits to Nevada before moving to Laughlin in 1999 and then to Las Vegas in 2001. In addition to video poker, Roxie loved reading, jigsaw puzzles and The Price is Right. She was even a prize-winning contestant on the show in 2008. Ever a ray of sunshine to those she met, Roxie will be remembered, mostly, for the funny things she did-usually unintentional, always staying true to herself. Though her quirks are mere memories now, she will live with us forever through her recipes for Meatballs, Swiss Steak and Enchilada Casserole for years to come.
Roxanna was preceded in death by husband Tom (2007) and son James (2011), and is survived by her children, Nancy (Alex) Ariniello, Chuck Podhaisky, Mary (Ed) Gillin, Julie (Pat) Kelly, Patty Podhaisky, Gary (Jodi) Podhaisky, and John (Nha) Podhaisky; 15 grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.
The family requests that any memorials be donated, in her name, to Nathan Adelson Hospice, 4141 Swenson St., Las Vegas, NV 89119. A rosary will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 904 Cheyenne Ave., Alliance, NE on Thursday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Friday, April 29 at 10:00 a.m., also at Holy Rosary.
