U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Anna Knight, 98

Anna J. Knight, 98, of Irvington died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

Services were Dec. 1 at Northwest Hills United Church of Christ. Rev. Douglas Roberts officiated.

Anna J. Knight was born April 27, 1899, to Henry and Catherine Witzke at Bennington, Neb. She graduated from Benson High School in 1917. On Jan. 14, 1920, she married Harvey Knight. They farmed during their married life in the Irvington area. She had lived at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home for the past 7 1/2 years.

She was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church in Irvington and was instrumental in the formation of Northwest Hills United Church of Christ, serving as church secretary for many years. She was a Sunday School teacher, a leader of Christian Endeavor; a member of the Homemaker 's Extension Club and reported news from the Irvington area for the Douglas County Gazette for many years.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Irene Knight of Fort Calhoun; a son-in-law, Gayle Brodill of Lakeville, Minn.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Clevinger and Frances Henigas of Phoenix, Ariz. and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; a son, Kenneth; a daughter, Reava and three grandchildren.

Arthur Sass, 85

Arthur Sass, 85, of Bennington died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John 's Lutheran Church. Rev. John Pierson will officiate. Burial will be in the German Cemetery.

Arthur Sass was born March 17, 1912, in Douglas County. He was a farmer.

Survivors are sons, Lyle Sass, Blair and Victor Sass, Bennington; a daughter, Marjorie A. Biffar, Blair; a brother, Bill Sass, Bennington; a sister, Iris Rix, Junction City, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Hadan Golden Reichmuth Funeral Home in Bennington is in charge of arrangements.

Jay Winslow, 43

Jay P. Winslow, 43, of Plano, Tex., died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 in Farmers Branch, Tex.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at the Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano. Rev. Paul Goodrich will officiate. Burial will be at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Tex.

Jay P.. Winslow was born Jan. 14, 1954 in Blair to Lawrence Dale and LaVerna Gene (Pearson) Winslow. On May 23, 1992, he married Susan Marshall-Winslow in Plano. He was a mechanical engineer for Carter & Burgess and also worked with Primerica Finicial Services. He had also worked for Henningson Durham in Richardson, Tex.

He was a member of the Custer Road United Methodist Church and was involved for many years with Global Mission Fellowship.

Survivors are his wife, Susan; mother, LaVerna Winslow of Osceola, Neb.; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Monte and Angela Marshall of Buenos Aires, Argentina; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Charlie Sexton of Austin Tex.; three step-grandchildren, Justin Marshall, Stefan Marshall and Alaine Marshall of Buenos Aires; a sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Dave Watts of Osceola; a brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Debbie Winslow of Omaha; two nieces, Toni Watts and Kylie Watts, both of Osceola; and a nephew, Aaron Watts of Osceola.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services are under the direction of Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Directors in McKinney, Tex.

Helen J. Farlow, 88

Helen J. Farlow, 88, of Fremont, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Private family services were Monday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Rev. Dave Korth of St. Patrick 's Catholic Church in Fremont officiated.

Helen J. Farlow was born Aug. 1, 1909, in Deer River, Minn. to Earl and Beatrice ( Sullivan ) Van Nest. She grew up in Minnesota and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. She taught in high schools in South Dakota, North Dakota and Iowa for 50 years. She also gave piano lessons. She lived at International Falls, Minn. and then Cedar Falls, Iowa, before moving to Fremont in August 1987. She had been at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair since December 1992.

She attended St. Patrick 's Catholic Church; was a former member of St. Patrick 's Catholic Church at Cedar Falls and was a member of the PTA in Iowa and the Beaver Hills Golf Club at Cedar Falls.

She married Louis Thompson at Brookings, SD, in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1975. She married Paul Farlow in 1979 at Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death in 1982. Survivors are her son and daughter - in - law, Jerry and Jean Thompson of Manheim, Penn.; a daughter and son - in - law, Barb and Gene Merz of Arlington; nine grandchildren and nine - great - grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands; brothers, Dick Van Nest and Don Van Nest; a sister, June Ditmore and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer 's Association or the donor 's choice.

Jamess Glass II, 50

James Todd Glass, II, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997.

Memorial services were held at Mount Vernan Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, Calif. on Nov. 21.

James Todd Glass, II, was born May 19, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo. He moved with his parents to Blair when he was a young boy; attended and graduated from Blair High School and studied mechanical engineering at Dana College.

On April 4, 1947, he married Wanda Jean Gilliam. He served in the US Navy during World War II.

He worked for Westinghouse in Kansas City and in 1961, he relocated to Rancho Cordova, Calif., where he was a materials analyst program planner for Aerojet. He was involved in various space programs during his time there, including Gemini, Polaris and Apollo. He retired from Aerojet in 1987.

He coached Little League.

Survivors are his wife, Wanda; five children and their spouses, Pamela and James Williamson, Omaha; Patricia Glass, Rancho Cordova; James, III and Sylvie Glass of Fort Collins, Colo.; John and Elena Glass of Citrus Heights, Calif.; and Todd and Nancy Glass of Marlette Michigan; 11 grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.

Mary Irvin, 66

Mary Catherine Irvin, 66, of Omaha died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Services are pending at Campbell - Aman Funeral Home.

Mary Catherine Irvin was born Sept. 26, 1931.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard Gene Irvin, Sr., Omaha; daughters and sons - in - law, Sally Jo and Fred Pfeffer and LuAnn and Bernie Racek, all of Omaha; a son and daughter - in - law, Leonard Gene and Denise Irvin, Jr., of Plattsmouth; six grandchildren and a brother, Denny L. Colgan, Herman.

Bruce Stratman, 36

Bruce Stratman, 36, of Kennard died at his home Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Interdenominational Church in Omaha. Burial will be in the Kennard Cemetery.

Bruce Stratman was born Feb. 8, 1961, in Omaha to James and Agnes ( Johnson ) Stratman, Sr. He graduated from Blair High School in 1979.

On Sept. 24, 1982, he married Diane Taylor in Cleveland, Ohio.

For the past 16 years, he was employed by Roberts Dairy.

He was a member of Son - Rise Community Church, a leader of the Little Lambs Children 's Choir; had been the leader of the Children 's Church Choir at Trinity Interdenominational Church and served on the Kennard Fire Department.

Survivors are his wife, Diane Stratman; five children, Christopher Stratman, Jennifer Stratman, Samantha Stratman, Benjamin Stratman and Stephanie Stratman; his parents, Jim and Aggie ( Agnes ) Stratman of Bennington; four brothers and sisters - in - law, Jim and Janece Stratman, Jr., Bennington; Mike and Pam Stratman, Valley, Nebr.; Rich and Joi Stratman, Fort Calhoun; John and Andrea Stratman, Waterloo Nebr.; three sisters and brothers - in - law, Debra and Paul Sornson, Wichita, Kans.; Denise and Steve Olsen, Aurora, Ill.; and Melissa Stratman, Boulder, Colo.

Memorials may be given to the Stratman family.

Campbell - Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
