Jerry H. Happel, Morse Bluff, Sept. 19, age 68

Jerry H. Happel died Sept. 19 at his home in Morse Bluff.
Jerry was born May 28, 1942, in Fremont to Howard and Doris (Christensen) Happel.
He grew up in Winslow and was a 1960 graduate of Hooper High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968 in Vietnam. Jerry received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Jerry operated an engine shop on his farm in Winslow until he moved to Fremont in 1978, where he operated Happel’s Sales & Service until 1985. He also ran a small engine shop in Columbus from 1983 to 1986.
On May 8, 1984, Jerry married Lois Johnson Cerny. The couple moved to Morse Bluff in 1986. She survives.
Throughout his life Jerry worked for small engine shops in Omaha and Lincoln, and drove truck for Oden Enterprises in Wahoo. He was also employed by Hartford Sand & Gravel and Fauss Builders in Fremont, The Tool House in Lincoln and Coufal Lumber Co. in Schuyler. Jerry retired in 2005 and opened Hillside Repair at his home in Morse Bluff. He was a member of American Legion Post #20 and VFW Post #8332.
In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by son Zach Happel of Morse Bluff; daughter Traci Happel of Omaha; sisters Betty (Coy) Sweet and Ann (Bob) Wilke, all of Fremont; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Sept. 23 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, with military honors following. Burial was at Killian cemetery in Morse Bluff.
Memorials are suggested for the Saunders County Hospice or the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha.

Balentine Galindo, Wahoo, Sept. 16, age 50

Balentine M. Galindo of Wahoo died Sept. 16 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was born July 31, 1960, in Scottsbluff to Juan and Franchica (Mendoza) Galindo. He moved to the Fremont area in 1968 and later to the Ames area. Balenine was a 1979 graduate of North Bend Central. He was employed at Midland University in Fremont.
Survivors include companion Deb Zara of Wahoo; five step-children; brothers Contrad (Chris) Galindo, Toby Galindo, sister Jenny (Bill) McCarty, all of Fremont.
The funeral was Sept. 22 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with burial at Calvary cemetery in Fremont.
Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial designation at a later date.

Pauline (Holtorf) Roehrkasse, North Bend, Sept. 14, age 101

Pauline Catherine (Holtorf) Roehrkasse died at the Fremont Area Medical Center on September 14, her 101st birthday.
Pauline was born September 14, 1909, in rural Malmo to Jurgen Heinrich and Wiebke (Knuth) Holtorf.
Pauline graduated from Wahoo High School in 1927 and Luther College in 1929. She taught private music lessons until her marriage to Raymond W. Roehrkasse on June 11, 1935.
The couple was active in Grand Island church, music, and community activities. At Trinity Lutheran, Pauline was organist and served as President of the Nebraska South Region of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and was one of the members of the original national board. During her ten years on the board, she was elected Corresponding Secretary and helped organize several other districts in surrounding states.
Pauline received a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1967. She taught for the Grand Island Public School System for more than 20 years. After her retirement from teaching, Pauline taught private piano lessons, presented music programs for area retirement homes, was the president of the board of the Grand Island Community Concert Association, and was active in the Cosmo Pals. In 1979, she attended the organizational meeting of the Central States Coalition on Aging and the National League of Silver-Haired Legislatures. She was elected to the first board and served as Nebraska National Silver-Haired Senator from 1992-2000.
Pauline lived in an assisted living residence in Lincoln from 2001 until moving to Birchwood Manor in North Bend in 2005.
She is survived daughters Paula (Ralph) Knepper of Holdrege, Claire (Michael G.) Eason of North Bend, and Kathryn (Glenn) Trebelhorn of Claremore, Okla.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. The funeral will be Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island.
The family suggests memorials be given to the North Bend Library Fund or Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island.

Willard "Slim" Fuchtman, Creighton, Sept. 13, age 90

Willard “Slim” J. Fuchtman of Creighton died at the Creighton Care Center on Sept. 13.
Willard was born June 28, 1920, to Joseph and Clara (Schula) Fuchtman, on the family farm southeast of Creighton. He attended St. Ludger Catholic School all of his school years and graduated in 1939. He worked as a farm hand and on the family farm for many years. When the Creighton Sale Barn opened, Willard worked as a ring man until 1960.
On Feb. 18, 1957, he married Mary Lou Stockman at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Plainview. She survives.
Williard and Mary Lou’s first home was the Stortz farm east of Creighton, which is now the American Legion Home. In 1960 they purchased a farm and lived there until 1989 when they moved into Creighton.
Willard was a member of St. Ludger Catholic Church and Creighton Senior Citizens. He was also a chairman of the Creighton Township Board for 35 years.
In addition to his wife, Willard is survived by daughters Barbara (Patrick) Kelley of Winnetoon, Marie (Roger) Nordboe of Ames; sisters Edna Burns and Florence Hasenpflug of Creighton, Sister Kathleen of Milwaukee, Wis., Margaret Focht of Lewiston, Ind.; brothers Joe Fuchtman of Creighton, and Edwin Fuchtman of Hartington, Nebr; and two grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sept. 17 at St. Ludger Church in Creighton, with burial in St. Ludger Cemetery.

Paul J. Corritore, Sr., Fremont, Sept. 13, age 93

Paul J. Corritore, Sr. of Fremont died Sept. 13 at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha.
Paul was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Omaha to Joseph and Salvitrice (Italia) Corritore. He grew up in Omaha, graduating from Omaha South High School and attending two years of business college.
Paul worked for Union Pacific Railroad, retiring as Office Manager in the purchasing department.
After retiring he spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., and moved to Fremont in 2006.
Paul served in the U.S. Army Signa1 Corps during WWII, in New Guinea, southern Philippines and Luzon.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont; a former member of Morse Bluff St. George Catholic Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church of Mesa, Ariz. He was a member of American Legion Post 1 in Omaha, Omaha Fraternal Order of Eagles, and an art club in Mesa.
On May 29, 1947, Paul married Barbara Pazur in Omaha. After her death he married Rita M. Minarik Dunker of Morse Bluff on Oct. 21, 1989, in Fremont. She survives.
Other survivors include sons Paul Joseph (Cindy) Carritore Jr. of Waterloo, Mark (Aleta Ring) Corritore of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters Diane (Gary) Lloyd of Omaha, Mary Beth (Hank) Vargas of La Vista; step-sons Quinn Dunker of Morse Bluff, Ray Dunker of San Pedro, Calif., Brad Dunker of New York City, NY, Tim (Mary) Dunker of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; stepdaughters Pat Dunker of Westminster, Colo., Mary (Bob) Shanahan of North Bend, Terese Gulley of Niceville, Fla., Tammy Dunker of Fremont; brother Frank (Betty) Corritore of Omaha; sisters Pauline Corritore of Omaha, Carmella Ayers of Woodbine, Iowa; 15 Grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Sept. 17 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. Visitation will be Sept. 16, from 3-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with fami1y receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Friday.
Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Omaha with military honors by American Legion Post 1/Nebraska National Guard.
Memorials are suggested for American heart Association, St. Patrick‘s Catholic Church and the Fremont elementary school; St. George Catholic Church of Morse Bluff or the Morse Bluff/North Bend Area Veterans Memorial Park.

Jerome D. Emanuel, North Bend, Sept. 9, age 78

Jerome D. Emanuel of North Bend died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln on Sept. 9.
Jerome was born Nov. 6, 1931, at the family home in rural North Bend, Neb., to Joseph and Martha (Plantenberg) Emanuel. He grew up in rural North Bend and was a graduate of Dodge High School. Jerome farmed in the North Bend area, and then served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He played on the Air Force baseball team, and after his discharge returned to farming.
On April 4, 1959, Jerome married Lorraine Rolf at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in rural West Point. She survives.
Jerome retired from farming in 2006 and moved into North Bend. He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, American Legion Post #122 of Dodge and Knights of Columbus Council #3736. He previously served on the Webster School Board for several years, and was a former member of the National Farmers Organization.
In addition to his wife, Jerome is survived by sons Keith Emanuel of North Bend, and Jeff (Stacy) Emanuel of Lincoln; daughters Deb (Bob) Hoppe of Tuscon, Ariz, Donna (Michael) Buell of Bellevue, and Diane (Gary) Anderson of Lincoln; brothers Duane (Mary Ann) Emanuel, Wendell (Mary Ann) Emanuel, all of North Bend; sister Rosanne Eikmeier of Dodge; and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sept. 13 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, with burial at St. Patrick’s cemetery in Clyde.
Memorial contributions are suggested to National Ataxia Association and to the Morse Bluff/North Bend Area Veterans Memorial Park.

Arlene (Viglicky) Ertner, Spokane, Wash., Sept. 8, age 85

Arlene M. (Viglicky) Ertner, of Spokane, Wash., died at her home on Sept. 8.
Arlene was born May 23, 1925, in Edholm, Neb., to Anton and Josephine Viglicky.
Arlene was involved in several charitable organizations, and worked for Ronald McDonald House for 20 years. She later retired from W.T. Grant’s in Spokane.
Arlene is survived by sons Lawrence (Kristine) Ertner, Jr., Douglas Ertner, Thomas (Thomas Sacco) Ertner, William (Joyce) Ertner; daughters Kathleen (Thomas) Heckler, Barbara Brown; sister Evelyn Pollard of North Bend; brother Richard Viglicky; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Arlene was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Lawrence W. Ertner (Lt. Col. USAF, Ret.).
The funeral was held Sept. 11 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Spokane, with private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Spokane.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Ronald McDonald House, The American Cancer Society, Hospice of Spokane, or a chosen charity.

Herbert Wesch, Ames, Sept. 5, age 89

Herbert H. Wesch of Ames died Sept. 5 at The Pathfinder House in Fremont.
Herb was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Omaha to Adoph and Henrietta (Heidemann) Wesch. He grew up in Niobrara and moved to Dodge County in 1935. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1938.
Herb served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving three years in the South Pacific. He returned home and farmed in the North Bend and Ames area.
On June 16, 1946, Herb married Evelyn K. Schutt in North Bend. She survives.
Herb was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend where he was a Sunday School teacher for many years and held most of the offices within the church. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman’s League, served many years on the District 91, Ames, school board and was a member of the Mid America Dairy Association.
In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by sons Jim Wesch of North Bend, Ken (Deb) Wesch of Arlington, Bob (Jan) Wesch of Detroit, Mich.; daughter-in-law Betty Wesch of Omaha; sister Elizabeth (Melvin) Mariam of Hastings; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grand children.
The funeral is Sept. 8 at St. Peter Lutheran Church with the Rev. Calvin L’Heureus officiating. Visitation is Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Military graveside services will be conducted by members of VFW Post 8223, AmVets Post 20 both of North Bend and American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff at Woodland cemetery in North Bend.
Memorials are suggested for St. Peter Lutheran Church.
