U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Dionne Striplin

Dionne Isabella Striplin died Aug. 12 at her home in Elkhorn. She was born Sept. 12, 2010.
She is survived by parents LaRon and Mallory Striplin of Elkhorn; brother DeShawn; grandparents Jeanene Lambley of North Bend, Mike and Barb Limbach of Fremont and Larry and Maxine Striplin of Marin City, Calif; great-grandparents Glenn and Jeanene Westerman of North Bend; aunts and uncles LaKiya Striplin of Marin City, Calif., Daniel and Kessa Early of Novado, Califl, Aaron Limbach of North Bend, Trevor and Shelby Limbach of Fremont.
The funeral was Aug. 16 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn. Interment was at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Elkhorn.

James Larry Phillips

James “Larry” Phillips of Omaha, formerly of North Bend, died Aug. 5 at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha. Larry was born May 18, 1942, in Scottsbluff to James and Julia (Ustohal) Phillips. He lived in Scottsbluff and Curtis for a short time before moving to North Bend.
Larry was a 1960 graduate of North Bend High School. He married Margaret R. “Peg” Wernsman on Oct. 14, 1967, in Prague. Larry served in the Nebraska National Guard from 1964 to 1970.
Larry owned and operated Jim’s Used Car Market in North Bend and also was a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service until retiring in 2000.
Larry and Peg wintered in Texas for several years and then moved to Omaha in June 2013. Peg died on Nov. 18, 2013.
Larry was a member of the American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff and former member of the North Bend Chamber of Commerce. He attended St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend.
He is survived by daughters Pamela Phillips of Omaha, Amy (Bob) Robles of Omaha; sister Nancy (Mike) Goddard of LaVista; brother-in-law Robert Wernsman Jr. of Lubbock, Texas; sisters-in-law JoAnn (Dick) Alback, Tracy Wernsman, Beth (Matt) Holland, all of Omaha; one granddaughter, Amanda (Thomas) Koziol; and two great grandchildren, Tommy and Korbin Koziol.
Funeral services were Aug. 9 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. The Rev. Greg Hall officiated. Military grave side services were conducted by members of the American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff, the V.F.W. Post 8223 and AmVets Post 20 of North Bend. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the North Bend Library.

Russell Soukup

Russell T. Soukup of Omaha, formerly of Morse Bluff, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, telling stories and memories of him, on July 21 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Russ was born July 10, 1957, in Schuyler to Anton and Gladys (Rezac) Soukup.
He grew up on a farm near Morse Bluff and graduated in 1975 from North Bend Central High School. He was a member of the Morse Bluff Volunteer Fire Department and worked at Hormel in Fremont. In 1989 he and his family moved to Omaha where he worked at Zalkin in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 2010 he started his own company, RTS (Rag and Textile Solutions, Inc).
Russ married Sandy Wobig on Oct. 11, 1980, in Fremont.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy of Omaha; son Blake Soukup of Boulder, Colo.; daughter Blair (Matt) SantaMaria of Los Osos, Calif.; brothers Tony (Linda) Soukup of Purcellville, Va., Jack ( Nancy) Soukup of Davey, Scott ( Susie) Soukup of Lake Villa, Ill. and Jerry ( Barb) Soukup of Morse Bluff; sister, Janel (Mike) Harnan of Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughters Elena and Adalynn SantaMaria, who proudly called him Pappy.
A memorial service was held July 26 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. The Rev. Gundar Lamberts officiated.Burial was at Killian cemetery near Morse Bluff.
Memorials may be given to the Morse Bluff Volunteer Fire Department or to the family.

Carl Watts

Carl Winfred Watts of North Bend died July 19. Funeral services were July 25 at Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair. Burial was at the Blair Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans.
Carl Winfred Watts, the son of Pleasant Hopkins Watts and Callie Mae (Amos) Watts, was born Nov. 25, 1921, on a farmstead near Burchard. He graduated from Blair High School in 1939. Carl served in the Army Air Corps from August 1940 to November 1945. He held a variety of jobs from Tech Sgt. Aircraft mechanic to eventually a 2nd Lt. Flight Engineer Instructor for the B-24 bomber. After his honorable discharge from active duty Carl moved to Blair and started his career in construction, first as an independent contractor and then later going on to work for Hagan and Son Construction Company in Omaha where he worked for many years as a professional brick mason.
Carl was a member of the Bricklayer’s Union Local #1 of Omaha for over 65 years. Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blair for over 50 years.
Carl is survived by a daughter, Linda Miller of Goose Creek, S.C.; son Dan (Connie) Watts of North Bend; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and sister Lilly Roerick of Blair. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Donnie Merle (Roberts) Watts; and son James Steven Watts.

Ella Ladehoff

Ella H. Ladehoff of Fremont, formerly of Dodge, passed away July 19 at Nye Pointe Health & Rehab in Fremont. Ella was born Dec. 10, 1915, in rural Stanton to Emil and Sophie (Ristau) Wulf. She grew up near Stanton and moved to Scribner in 1930.
Ella married Rueben H. Ladehoff on April 27, 1937, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Pleasant Valley, northwest of North Bend. They moved and farmed near Scribner for several years and later near Dodge until retiring. Rueben passed away Nov. 1, 2000. Ella moved to Fremont in 2002.
Ella was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont and a former member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and of the Ladies Aid at church. She was a former member of a county extension club.
Survivors include sons, Harold (Gayle) Ladehoff of Lincoln, Harlan (Lavonne) Ladehoff, Harvey Ladehoff both of North Bend, David (Karen) Ladehoff of Arlington; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. July 23 at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Michael Thomas will officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4 - 8 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m., all at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, following lunch.
Memorials are suggested to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont.

Ann Kavan

Ann Kavan of Morse Bluff died July 10 at the Saunders County Care Center in Wahoo.
She was born June 4, 1933, on a farm near Brainard to John and Anna (Benes) Scholz. She attended grade school near Loma and graduated from Brainard High School.
Ann married Ruben Kavan on Nov. 23, 1957, in Schuyler. They operated a dairy farm near Morse Bluff. She was employed at the North Bend Popcorn plant prior to working 35 years at the Rawhide Steakhouse in North Bend.
Ann was a member of the Morse Bluff Z.C.B.J. Lodge 9 and a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 340 and North Bend V.F.W. Auxiliary 8223.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Ruben of Morse Bluff; daughters Ruby (Ray Jr.) Urban of Malmo, daughters Ruth (Steve) Bertone of Papillion, Deann Souza of Fredricksburg, Va.; sons Roland (Kinley) Kavan of Morse Bluff, Dean Kavan of Fremont; sister Albina (Cyril) Kellner of Wahoo; sisters-in-law Helen Scholz of Wahoo, Shirley Scholz of Crete; seven grandchildren, one great- grandchild; and special friends Nadine and Jerrine Racek of Morse Bluff.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Adolph, Rudolph, Ernest, John and George Scholz; and two sisters, Lillian Hennesey and Helen Kellner.
A funeral service was held July 14 at the Morse Bluff Legion Hall with Jerry L. Kracl speaking. Committal was at Killian Cementary in Morse Bluff.
Memorials to the American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary or Hospice and Home Healthcare of Saunders County.

Susie Kudlacek

Susie Kudlacek of Grand Island died June 18 at the Grand Island Veteran’s Home.
Susie was born March 20, 1920, in North Platte to Charles and Ima Yanagida. She was a 1938 graduate of Platte Valley School District 8.
In 1957 she graduated from the North Platte Beauty Academy and received her cosmetology license.
Susie was a cosmetologist in Omaha for several years. She and her husband, Bud, moved to North Platte to care for her mother and until their retirement had Bud’s 215 Bar in North Platte.
Susie was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in North Platte.
She is survived by her husband Bud Kudlacek of Grand Island; brother Roy Yanagida of Lincoln; son Ron Minobe of Denver, Colo., stepson Dwayne Kudlacek of Holdrege; stepdaughters Caryn (Bob) Moser of North Bend and Connie Moser of California.
Preceding her in death were husbands Jim Minobe and Vince Mullaney.
There was a private service for the family with burial of her ashes in North Platte Cemetery.

Kelly Dolezal

Kelly Dolezal of Fremont died June 16 at the Fremont Area Medical Center. Kelly was born July 11, 1972, in Fremont to Kenneth Dolezal Sr. and Kathleen (Westphalen) Dolezal. The family moved to North Bend in 1985.
Kelly was a 1990 graduate of North Bend Central High School and attended Nebraska College of Business in Omaha. She returned to Fremont and then lived in Florida, moving back to Fremont in 2005.
She is survived by sons Logan Dolezal and Nolan Dolezal, daughter Molly Dolezal, all of Fremont; mother Kathleen Dolezal of Fremont; father Kenneth (LaZelle) Dolezal Sr. of North Bend; brothers Kenneth Dolezal, Jr. and Kirk (Christine) Dolezal all of North Bend, Kevin D. (Nichol) Dolezal of Omaha and Klint D. (Rachel) Dolezal of Oakland; nieces and nephews.
Memorial service was June 21 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. Michael Thomas officiating. Memorials may be directed to her children.

George Havlovec

George Albert Havlovec died June 15 at Birchwood Manor in North Bend. George was born April 23, 1930, in Prague to Andrew and Mary (Vyhlidal) Havlovec. He grew up in Morse Bluff and attended school there.
George married Wilma Racek on June 25, 1955, at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend. The couple moved to Fremont and lived there for several years until moving to an acreage by North Bend in 1966. George was employed by Hormel Foods in Fremont for 38 years, retiring in 1991. His wife, Wilma, died Jan. 24, 2002.
George was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend, the Good Samaritan Camping Club and the Fremont Eagles Camping Club.
He is survived by son Mark (Rita) Havlovec of Blair; daughter Sandy Talbott of Honey Creek, Iowa; son-in-law Larry Jessen of Homer; sister Hattie Claussen of North Bend; four grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
The funeral was June 19 at St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald Cleary officiated. Burial was at Killian cemetery near Morse Bluff. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
