U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Harold O. Swanson, 76
Harold O. Swanson, 76, of Fort Calhoun died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
Services were Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church. Rev. Gregg Miller officiated. Burial was in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery. Military honors were presented by American Legion Post No. 348. Solomon Lodge No. 10 conducted a Masonic service.

Harold Ove Swanson was born April 4, 1922, in Omaha to Harold V. and Hertha Ove Swanson. He grew up in Omaha and attended Omaha North High School. On July 15, 1942, he married Lillian Lavonne Smith in Omaha. The couple celebrated 54 years of marriage before her death on March 25, 1997. He was a World War II veteran, serving aboard the USS Maryland in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He had worked at Northside Bank in Omaha. He opened his own company, Calhoun Oil in 1947, when he and his wife decided to move to her hometown. Last Oct. 1, he celebrated 50 years of business with a special open house for his customers.

He was active in many community organizations and assisted with many projects. He had served as treasurer for Fort Calhoun School District No. 3, for the Washington County Historical Association and for the city of Fort Calhoun. He had served as a city councilman and was a 35 - year member of the Fort Calhoun Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 50 - year member and past commander of the American Legion Post 348.

He was also a 50 - year member of the Tangier Shrine. He was past Worshipful Master of Solomon Lodge 10 AF & AM. He was a past Patron of the Naomi Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a past Grand Patron and past chairman of the board of trustees of the Grand Chapter of Nebraska Order of Eastern Star. He had served as vice president on the board of trustees of the Eastern Star's Home for Children at Fremont. He was a past Grand Chef De Gare Du Nebraska 40 & 8.

From 1983 through 1985, he was president of the Nebraska Petroleum Marketers Association. Since 1974, he had served as a member of Fort Calhoun State Bank's board of directors. He was an elder at Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church.

He was survived by three sons, Clayton, Gregory and Joel and his wife, Kim; two daughters and sons - in - law, Marcia and Mark Graff and Nancy and Mark Prauner; 14 grandchildren, one great - grandson; and one sister, Janice Forbes of St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lillian.

Pallbearers were Robert Falk, Gayle Maine, Gene Smith, Sydney Clausen, Paul Kruger and Howard Barnes.

Carol Sprick was the organist.

Sievers - Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd G. "Bud" Utterback, 74
Lloyd G. "Bud" Utterback, 74, of Omaha and Arlington native, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998.
Services were Tuesday morning at the West Center Chapel of Heafey - Heafey - Hoffmann Dworak & Cutler in Omaha. Rev. Douglas L. Ferguson officiated. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by Millard American Legion No. 374 and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 8334.

Lloyd G. "Bud" Utterback was born April 3, 1924, at Arlington to Elmer and Rose ( Hanslip) Utterback. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a postal worker.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3943 at Elkhorn and Millard American Legion Post No. 374.

He was survived by his wife, Elva Rose; a daughter and son - in - law, Loye and William Kenny of Olathe, Kan.; three grandchildren, Summer, Alex and Nathaniel Kenny; two brothers, Floyd and Kenneth Utterback, both of Omaha; a sister, Phyllis Cook of San Angelo, Texas; nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Eagles or American Legion.

June Woodring, 76
June Woodring, 76, of Blair died on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
Services were Saturday, Aug. 8 at First Christian Church in Blair. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery.

June Engelke was born on June 18, 1921, at DeSoto to George and Marietta ( Stricklett) Engelke. On Sept. 13, 1947, she married Brice Woodring, Jr., at Logan, Iowa.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Brice; five children and spouses, David and Connie Woodring, Donald and Linda Woodring, Duane and Shelly Woodring, Jerry and Mary Uehling, Mary and Ned Miller, all of Blair; eight grandchildren and one brother, Tim Engelke of Blair.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill Engelke and one sister, Helen Uehling.

Campbell - Aman Funeral Home in Blair was in charge of arrangements.

Ora Johnson, 95
Ora P. Johnson, 95, of Blair died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Campbell - Aman Funeral Home in Blair. Burial will be in the Hillcrest cemetery in Omaha at 1 p.m.

Ora P. Miller was born on Oct. 1, 1902, in rural Benedict to John and Bertha ( Deremer ) Miller. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Benedict. She attended two years of high school in Benedict and graduated from York High School. She taught school in York County for four years. On Sept. 9, 1925, she married Harry Amos Johnson.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Blair, Golden Friends and the Order of Easter Star, Trinity Chapter in Omaha. She had served as the chapter's secretary for six years.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Blatter of Blair; five grandchildren; eight great - grandchildren; a sister - in - law, Marie Bench of Aurora, Colo.; and several nephews and their spouses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry in November of 1969; her parents, a daughter, Janice; a son - in - law, John Blatter; and two brothers, Evan and Roy Miller.

Campbell - Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Scheffler, 91
Alice Scheffler, 91, of Blair, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Blair. Burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.

Alice Beck was born Feb. 16, 1907, in Blair to Hans and Ida ( Badgrow ) Beck. She graduated from Blair High School. In 1927 she married Orval Scheffler. They owned and operated Scheffler Sporting Goods for many years.

She is survived by her son and daughter - in - law, Jim and Eunice Scheffler of Blair; grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Scheffler of Blair and four great - grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orval in October of 1970; her parents; one son, William; one brother, Harry Beck and one sister, Edna Kuhr.

Campbell - Aman Funeral Home in Blair is in charge of arrangements.

Obert Kruger
The Rev. Obert W.F. Kruger of Hooper, formerly of Fremont, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at the Hooper Care Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. David Loeschen officiating. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery north of Arlington.

Visitation with the family receiving friends will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to service.

A more complete obituary will appear in the next Enterprise and Arlington Citizen.

Gary W. Mundorf, 51
Gary W. Mundorf, 51, of San Pedro, Calif., a Blair native, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at his home.
Services were Wednesday, Sept. 2 at the Gamby Chapel, Lomita, Calif. Rev. Richard Freeman of the Ocean View Baptist Church officiated. Burial was in Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Gary Willus Mundorf was born Oct. 5, 1946 in Blair to Willus and Bernice Mundorf. He graduated from Blair High School in 1965. When he was 19, he drove to California in his Corvette. He worked at Todd Shipyards in Carson as welding supervisor. His innovative and creative concept of converting Jaguar engines grew into a prosperous business. He had lived in the San Pedro area for 29 years and operated his business of Jag's Services, Inc., at Carson, Calif.

He was survived by his wife, Michelle; one son, Gary Jr. of Harbor City, Calif.; one daughter, Sonya Scott and her husband, Adam of Harbor City; his parents, Willus and Bernice Mundorf of Blair; two brothers, Dennis, and his wife, Dianna, of Omaha and Steve of Atlantic, Iowa; two sisters, Linda Briggs, and husband, George, of Herman and Carol Sparks of Lawrence, Kan.; two grandsons, Christopher Scott and Isaiah Scott of Harbor City and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair where his grandmother, Syrilda Mundorf, lived for many years before her death in 1997.
