Frances E. Overton
December 1, 1933 - October 10, 2010

Frances E. Overton, 76, died Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

She was born December 1, 1933 in Lyman, Nebraska to Alex and Helen (Haas) Libsack.

Frances worked for many years as a L.P.N. specializing in geriatric care. She returned to Alliance in 2004 and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, R.S.V.P. and volunteered at the Knight Museum.

Her survivors are her daughters, Peggy A. Skoglund of Denver, CO and Gail (John) Jorgensen of Lakewood, CO; and her grandchildren, Cody Jorgensen of Thornton, CO and Erik Jorgenson of Lakewood, CO. She is also survived by her brother, Kenneth (Marlene) Libsack of Yakima, WA, her sister, Judy (Dan) Laursen of Alliance, her sister-in-law, Sherry Libsack of Alliance and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceeded in death by her parents and her brother, Sandy Libsack.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s United Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Meysing officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. John’s Columbarium.

The family would prefer memorials be given to the Knight Museum Sandhills Center for the genealogy room or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jerry Lee Holmes
February 12, 1924 - April 30, 2010

Jerry L. Holmes, 86, died Friday, April 30, 2010 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance.

He was born February 12, 1924 in Watonga, Oklahoma to Bert and Lena (Cash) Holmes.

Jerry served in the U.S. Navy from January 21, 1942 to October 13, 1945 in the Pacific Theatre.

He returned to Alliance following his military service and worked as a barber for 60 years operating Jerry’s Barber Shop.

On July 29, 1951 he was united in marriage to Marian Lorraine Dohse in Gordon, Nebraska.

His survivors are his wife, Lorraine, his daughter, Linda (Kent) Higgins of Fort Collins, CO, his son, Jerry Jay (Tina) Holmes of Omaha, his grandchildren, David (Jessica) Higgins, Ryan Higgins, Sandy Holmes, Heather (Robert) Canion and Jeremy Holmes, his great-grandchildren, Robert and Carter Canion. He is also survived by his brother, Vern of Chadron, his sisters, Edith Jensen of Gordon and Louise Sheets of Arnold.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Tom, his brother Jimmy, and his sisters, Peggy and Ruth.

Graveside services will be Thursday, May 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alliance cemetery with Reverend Martin T. Schnare and Reverend Richard C. Mueller officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent in care of the family to 512 Potash Avenue, Alliance, Nebraska, 69301.

Ralph A. Wood
January 16, 1927 - November 20, 2009

Ralph “Woody” A. Wood, 82, passed away Friday, November 20th at Box Butte General Hospital.

Woody was born January 16, 1927 at Hay Springs, NE to Robert and Ruby (Gibbs) Wood. He attended Elementary and Middle School in Hay Springs and Chadron and finished his high school education in Alliance.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and because of his welding experience he was drafted into the Seabees where he served his country during World War II.

Upon his return from the War he worked for Metal Products in Chadron and then moved to Alliance where he worked for the Gas Company until hiring on with the CB&Q; Railroad in Alliance.

On June 30, 1959 he married Zola (Peggy) Stambach Sever and continued to work for the railroad which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement. In 1967 Woody and Peggy started their own Heating/AC and Sheet Metal Business known as Z & S Sheet Metal. Today this business is currently owned and operated by them and their Grandson, Jerad Wilson.

Ralph, Woody, Wormy Wood, Dad, Grandpa, as he was known, had many talents and interests. Among them – hunting, fishing, soapstone carving, carpentry, sewing, Prairie Winds, traveling, stargazing, and a great thirst for knowledge. He was a gentle man with a twinkle in his eye and a love of life. He had a great love and passion for his family and was an excellent provider to them as well as their friend, advisor, counselor, and listener.

He was a member of the American Legion and served as Unit Commander of American Legion Post #7, County Commander, District 4 Commander, and Area D Vice Commander. He also belonged to the Masonic Order as a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Lions Club, VFW, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, BNSF Veterans Association, and the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy. His Children, Daren Sever of Alliance, Sheila (Jack) Wilson of Alliance, Grandchildren –Stephanie Hagerty of Hattiesburg, MS, Andrea (Jay) Coomes of Washougal, WA, Amber (David Romer) Wilson of Denver, CO, Jerad Wood Wilson of Alliance, Troy Wilson of Woodland, WA. Great Grandchildren, Shean, Kayla, Chantel, Bianca, Colton, Travis James, Darian.

He is also survived by his brother, George (Ollie) Wood of Chadron, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Cletus, Joe, Richard, Walter, Jim and his sisters Verla, Bernice, Roberta, and Ardella.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 3, at the United Methodist Church with Reverend Doug Griger officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2.

Cremation will follow the services and inurnment will be at a later date at the Nebraska Veterans cemetery in Alliance.

Memorials may be given to the American Legion Post #7, Masonic Temple – Alliance, NE, Nebraska Veterans cemetery – Alliance, NE, Sallows Military Museum – Alliance, NE, the United Methodist Church - Alliance, NE, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

LORETTA A. HOOD
October 3, 1916 - May 20, 2013

Loretta A. Hood, 96, passed away peacefully Monday, May 20, 2013 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center.

She was born October 9, 1916 at Agate, Nebraska to Ernest L. and Marie M. (Martin) Parker. She attended grade school at a school nearby and attended Scottsbluff High School.

On February 23, 1935 she was united in marriage to Oliver Louis Hood at Gering, NE. They lived with Oliver’s parents for a few years before moving to a ranch 35 miles north of Scottsbluff. After a few years they began farming west of Alliance and also operated a dairy farm. Later they would move to Golden, Colorado where they operated a Gambles Hardware store for 5 years before moving back to Alliance. Loretta then managed the Sweetbriar Clothing Store and later worked at the Box Butte County Courthouse as a custodian before retiring. She loved to dance, play cards and bingo. Most important in her life was her family who she loved dearly.

Loretta was a member of St. John’s United Lutheran Church, Eagles Auxiliary, R.S.V.P. and a former member of B.P.O. Does.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Tina and David Hartung and Ray and Jenifer Krause of Alliance, her great-grandsons, Michael Krause and Jacob Krause. She is also survived by her brother, Marvin Parker of VA, her sister, Shirley Nickell of OK, her sisters-in-law, Kathryn Hood of Alliance and Betty Parker of CO, her son-in-law, Robert Hickman of Alliance, her step-grandsons, Forrest Hickman of Hemingford, and James Hickman of OR, and step-great-grandchildren, Jace Hickman of WV, Zoya Hickman of OR, Savanah Hickman and Brady Weber of Hemingford, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, her daughters, Dorothy Hood, who died in her early childhood and Judy Hickman, her son-in-law, Franklin Krause, step-granddaughter, Cheralee Hickman and her 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s United Lutheran Church with Reverend Pat Kelley officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to St. John’s United Lutheran Church or Good Samaritan Health Care Center.

Jim Shannon
January 2, 1940 - May 8, 2013

Jim D. Shannon, 73, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Box Butte General Hospital.

He was born January 2, 1940 to Willie (Johnson) and James Calvin Shannon in DeQueen Arkansas. He was one of 8 children.

He spent his work life in grocery store management, and lastly he originated the Grocery Kart in Alliance. He worked previous to that as a helicopter pilot and in aviation.

Jim was an avid fisherman, loving to fly fish in Colorado and the Black Hills. But any kind of fishing suited him fine. He also loved to hunt and looked forward to football season starting. He loved his grandchildren’s' hockey, baseball, and soccer games. He took family camping trips seriously. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop and gardening, the history channel and one of his favorites was studying the Old Testament. As a member of his church, he served on the board of Trustees; he loved to sing with the worship team and helped with Awana by listening to children recite their bible verses. He had a generous spirit and contributed too many events.

He is survived by his wife Linda (Schnell) and 5 children, Jerry (Marsha) Shannon of Springfield TN, and their 5 children, Natalie (Jason) Lassiter, James, Jerry Jr., Josiah, and Naomi, daughters Jaime Robert s and Joey Sapp of Grove, Oklahoma, and to Jim and Linda two sons were born, C. Pete (Jackie) Shannon and son Eli of Farmington, MN, and Matthew P. (Stephanie) Shannon and their two daughters, Bailey and Kaitlyn of Alliance. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Eugene (Shirley) Shannon of Marietta, OK, , Jerry (Elizabeth) Shannon Gainesville, TX, Charles Shannon of Grandfield, OK, Kenneth (Judy) Shannon of Geronimo, OK, Chris Kyle of Lawton, OK, Kathleen (William) Perez of Wichita Falls, TX, Bye (Gordon) Paul of Denton, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

His whole being lighted up at the sight of his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, father-in-law, Pete Schnell, sister, Wanda Jeffcoat, and brother-in -law, Kenny Schnell.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Art Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday until 7:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.
