U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Donald Walters

Donald W. Walters, 46, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Abundant Life Christian Center. The Revs. James Tooley and George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends throughout the afternoon and evening, at Kleine Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or the Kiwanis Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) project.

Mr. Walters was born Feb. 23, 1954, at Grand Island to Clarence and Maude (Perkins) Walters. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1972. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in 1976, and then from Creighton University Law School in 1979.

After high school, he volunteered at the County Attorney's Office with Sam Grimminger serving as his mentor. Mr. Walters passed the bar exam in August 1979. He was a deputy county attorney for three years, and then went into private practice for more than 17 years. At the time of his death, he was associated with Truell, Murray and Walters.

He was a member of the Grand Island Kiwanis Club, serving as president from 1989-1990. He was the GISH Key Club advisor, and was involved in the builders club at Walnut Middle School. He was Lt. Governor of Division 23 of the Nebraska-Iowa District of Kiwanis 1996-1997. He also served as the key club deputy district administrator and the district administrator.

He served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. He received the Apple Award for education, and was a local member of the UNL Alumni Association.

He enjoyed politics, working with young people, rose gardens, music and books.

Survivors include his parents of Grand Island; two brothers, John of Broken Bow and Michael of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Albert Dissmeyer

AURORA -- Albert William Henry Dissmeyer, 87, of Aurora, formerly of Hampton, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at his home in Aurora.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Dissmeyer was born Feb. 2, 1913, to William and Mary (Poppe) Dissmeyer at Lincolnville, Kan. He was baptized March 9, 1913, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lincolnville, Kan. His mother died Sept. 26, 1913. He moved to Nebraska with his father, brothers and sisters when he was 18 months old. They lived near Beatrice where he attended school. At the age of 13, he moved to Polk. He was confirmed June 11, 1933, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Hordville. He moved to Hampton in 1934. He spent one year in Phoenix, Ariz., and one year in Toole, Utah, as an employee of the U.S. government before returning to Hampton.

He married Dorothea Kohtz on Feb. 16, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton. They farmed northeast of Hampton for 59 years. They moved to Aurora and have lived there since.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Gloria (Mrs. LaVerne) Bamesberger of Marquette and Gladys (Mrs. Jim) Huebner of Forsyth, Mo.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Frieda Brooke

KEARNEY -- Freida Faye Brooke, 77, of Kearney, formerly of Hastings, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Matt Nieman will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Custer cemetery in Broken Bow. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to service time Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church and the Adams County Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Brooke was born Oct. 14, 1923, at Broken Bow to Raymond and Pearl (Wymore) Neth. She graduated from Merna High School in 1941, and attended Kearney State College.

She married John McCarty in 1944, and moved to Hastings in 1946. She worked for Adams County Welfare and the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant in Grand Island from 1966 to 1971.

She married Robert E. Brooke in 1970. He died in 1994.

She owned and operated Pets Unlimited, where she groomed, raised and sold Yorkshire Terriers and poodles from 1975 to 1991.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Daughters of the Nile, where she was a past queen and Eastern Star.

Survivors include four sons, Jack McCarty of Lexington, Dr. Mike McCarty of Grand Island, Danny McCarty of Houston, Texas and Kevin McCarty of Lincoln; two daughters, Marlene Casey of Hutchinson, Kan. and Kim Gangwish of Shelton; a step-son, Dr. James D. Brooke of Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepdaughter, Janet Echternach of Kenai, Alaska; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; a sister, Veva Mae Graybeal; and a brother, Keith Neth.

Ira Culpepper

KEARNEY -- Ira Lee Culpepper, 90, of Kearney, formerly of Pleasanton, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Pleasanton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Karla Sheffy will officiate. Burial will be at the Pleasanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney, and prior to services Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Pleasanton United Methodist Church, Lion's Club Sight Program and the Pleasanton Community Foundation.

Mr. Culpepper was born Aug. 4, 1910, at Wilson County, Texas, to Matthew John and Lela Myrtle (Hawk) Culpepper. He attended school in the Stockdale, Texas, area.

He married Elmira McBride on Jan. 12, 1930, in Stockdale. The couple lived in Houston, Texas, for six years before they moved to San Antonio, Texas for 20 years. Mr. Culpepper managed the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store there. They later moved to Grand Island, where they lived for 11 years. Mr. Culpepper worked at the Veteran's Home. They moved to Pleasanton in 1971, where he worked at the Pleasanton State Bank until retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the Pleasanton United Methodist Church, Pleasanton's Lion's Club and the Texas Masonic Lodge in San Antonio, Texas.

He enjoyed coaching girl's softball, watching football and baseball and playing golf.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Rutledge (Mrs. Frank) of Spring Branch, Texas, Lee Nell (Mrs. Ercil) Phillips of Pleasanton and Marilyn (Mrs. Rodney) Royle of Gibbon; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nina Ramsey of Cuero, Texas and Joy Welch of Mission, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elmira on July 14, 1995; a son; an infant grandson; four brothers; and a sister.

'Larry' Kuntz

GENOA -- Lawrence "Larry" L. Kuntz, 67, of Genoa died Monday, Oct. 24, 2000.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. The Rev. Robert Nienaber will officiate. Burial will be in the Valley View cemetery in Genoa with military honors.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kuntz was born Sept. 20, 1933, to Jacob and Mary (Borzekowski) Kuntz in Loup City. He grew up in Beatrice and graduated from Beatrice High School. He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 15,1953, and was honorably discharged on Sept. 14, 1955, and attained the rank SP3.

He married Joan Ramaekers on Aug. 11, 1956, in Genoa. They lived in Genoa all their lives and he worked as a self-employed carpenter. He was past president of the Holy Name Society and an EME at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was active in Lions Club, American Legion and he was on the Genoa Park Board.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kim (Mrs. James) Gilsdorf of Genoa; two sons, James Kuntz and Jerry Kuntz, both of Genoa; a sister, Barbara Barnard of Beatrice; two brothers, John Kuntz of Lincoln and Paul Kuntz of Beatrice; three sisters, Catherine Nelson of Springfield, Mo., Dorothy Thies of Albion and Zita (Mrs. Duane) Prorok of Valley; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Kuntz and a sister, Mary Lou White.
