'Shorty' Fletcher

Aaron R. "Shorty" Fletcher, 89, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard M. Bacon will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Cardiac Care Unit, the American Heart Association or the family's choice.

Mr. Fletcher was born on Sept. 25, 1911, in Sherman County to Walter B. and Daisy (Criss) Fletcher. He grew up in the area and, as a teen-ager, helped in the planting of the Nebraska National Forest. He graduated from Loup City High School in 1932.

He married Rita Collins on Sept. 12, 1933, in Grand Island. They lived in the Loup City area until moving to Grand Island in 1936. He worked as a truck driver for more than 30 years with Interstate Truck Lines, later known as BeeLine. Mrs. Fletcher died in 1980.

Mr. Fletcher was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He enjoyed sports, fishing, hunting, horse racing, gardening and playing cards. After his wife's death, he carried on the tradition of quilting baby quilts for his grandchildren and making lap robes.

Survivors include three sons, Rex of Junction City, Kan., and Michael and Bob, both of Grand Island; two daughters, Karen Pirnie of Grand Junction, Colo., and Daisy Ellen Thomas of Naples, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Pearl Griffis of Cozad.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lavonne Czaplewski; one brother; and eight sisters.

Percy Barnes

ST. PAUL -- Percy O. "Duke" Barnes, 91, of St. Paul, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at his home in St. Paul.

Services will be at 1 p.m. MST, Saturday at the Berea Lutheran Church in Chappell. The Rev. Dawn Coffey will officiate. Burial will be in the Berea Church Cemetery.

A prayer service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Karl Ziegler will officiate. Visitation will follow the prayer until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Bethphage Mission in Axtell or the Lutheran Church Men of the Nebraska Synod.

Mr. Barnes was born June 10, 1909 in Cotesfield to William John and Grace Adelaide (Whitney) Barnes. He attended District 48 School and graduated from Cotesfield High School in 1926. He then farmed his parents' farm for two years.

He moved to Chappell in Duel County in April of 1928, where he worked for his uncle.

He married Evelyn H. Olson on October 22, 1941 at Chappell. The couple lived near Chappell where he farmed wheat. The couple moved to St. Paul in 1996.

He was a member of the Berea Church, where he served on the council, many committees, was a delegate to state conventions, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for seven years. He was active in the Lutheran Church Men, serving as local unit chairman and secretary-treasurer and state recording secretary and treasurer.

Mr. Barnes served on the board of District 10 School north of Chappell for 17 years and on the redistricting committee until all of the schools were consolidated in the county. He served on the Board of Directors of Farmers Mutual Telephone Association for 26 years and on the ASCS and county committees.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Janeice (Mrs. LeRoy) Gilliland of St. Paul, and Verla Jean Reyes of Denver; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Orville William "Billy" and a brother, William.

Archie Brewer

LITCHFIELD -- Archie L. Brewer, 81, of Litchfield died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Litchfield Christian Church. The Rev. Kenneth Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the Litchfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

James Hervert Sr.

RAVENNA -- James W. Hervert Sr., 87, of Ravenna died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus cemetery south of Ravenna. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Ravenna E.M.T.'s Legion Ball Association or St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hervert was born July 10, 1913, in Buffalo County to Amiel J. and Elizabeth (Chop) Hervert. He was educated at Antelope Valley and graduated from Ravenna High School. He attended Lincoln School of Commerce.

He married Sara Ann Peters on June 18, 1940, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. The couple lived in Ravenna where Mr. Hervert was employed by the Ravenna Bank for three years. In 1943, they moved to a farm south of Ravenna.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, was a director of the Ravenna Bank for 58 years, served on the District 107 School board, was involved with Legion Baseball, served on the Township Board, was a Crosier Apostolate member, was on the Our Lady of Lourdes Building Committee in 1954 and was a member of the N.R.A.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, James Jr. "Bill" of Hastings, Lyle of TerreHaute, Ind. and Clark of Ord; three daughters, Pat Shukis of Omaha, Alice McFadden of Dunning and Elizabeth Lehmer of Omaha; 26 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Amiel Jr. of Ravenna; and two sisters, Elsie Guzinski of Ravenna and Mary Bullock of Laramie, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard; one brother, Fred and an infant brother.

Troy Kremlacek Jr.

FULLERTON -- Troy J. "T.J." Kremlacek Jr., 3, son of Troy and Brandi Kremlacek of Fullerton died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in a fire at his home.

Services are pending.

Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Myers

SARGENT -- Helen E. Myers, 90, of Sargent, formerly of Comstock, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Sargent Nursing Center.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Douglas Grove cemetery in Comstock. The Rev. Mark Crist will officiate. Burial will be in the Douglas Grove Cemetery.

Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent is in charge of arrangements.

Roberta O'Hern

PALMER -- Roberta A. O'Hern, 95, of Palmer died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her home.

Services were Wednesday, February 7 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Mike McDermott officiated. Burial was at the Rose Hill cemetery in Palmer.

Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. O'Hern was born Oct. 27, 1905, in St. Paul to Thomas and Alice (Malloy) Stout. She attended St. Paul Grade School and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1924. She worked as a telephone operator from 1924 to 1928 in Palmer.

She married Bernard M. O'Hern on Sept. 17, 1928, in St. Paul. They lived on a farm north of Palmer. Mr. O'Hern died in 1952.

Mrs. O'Hern was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul.

She enjoyed sewing, making quilts and rugs for family, baking and reading.

Survivors include two sons, Bernard "Barney" of Palmer and Timothy of Denver; one daughter, Patricia (Mrs. Richard) Williams of Fullerton; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie O'Hare of Ackley, Iowa; and a special friend, Michelle Glynn.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Mary Alice; a daughter, Margaret (Mrs. Carroll) Rubesh; one grandson; one brother, Leonard Stout; and three sisters, Josephine Mercer, Guinevere Stout and Alice Kittridge.
