U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Edna Farmer

HASTINGS -- Edna E. Farmer, 98, of Hastings died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Perkins Pavilion.

Private family services and burial will be in the Broken Bow cemetery at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Farmer was born June 19, 1902, in Custer County to William Milton and Lucinda "Jenny" (Love) Marquiss. She attended Broken Bow schools.

She married Orval "Nick" Farmer on June 29, 1922, in Grand Island. They farmed for several years in the Custer Center area before moving into Broken Bow, where they lived until 1951. They then moved to Gibbon, where they and their son and family ran a cafe for several years.

Mr. Farmer died in 1977. Mrs. Farmer continued to maintain their home in Gibbon until her health forced her to move to Hastings, where her daughter and family lived.

Survivors include one daughter, Beverly (Mrs. Vernon) Shepherd of Hastings; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, four sisters and one brother.

Catherine Wojtkiewicz

FULLERTON -- Catherine M. Wojtkiewicz, 87, of Fullerton died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Fullerton.

Services are pending with Palmer Funeral Home.

Survivors include two sons, Larry and Ed, both of Omaha; seven daughters, Kathy Pena, Janet Reda, Jean Handler, Mary (Mrs. Robert) Holmes and Joan Wojtkiewicz, all of Omaha, Marcy Murphy of Lusby, Md., and Teresa (Mrs. Gene) Lassek of Fullerton.

'Clint' Hardy

JOHNSON LAKE -- Albert C. "Clint" Hardy, 64, of Johnson Lake died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Shreveport, La.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Hardy was cremated.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hardy was born Feb. 2, 1940, in Mullen to Earl R. and Agnes D. (Hladky) Hardy. He grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska, attending school in Mullen and Chadron. He earned his teaching degree from Chadron State College and taught in a one-room country school south of Whitman.

He enjoyed working around the ranch, horses, rodeos and the cowboy life. He worked highway construction, and later enjoyed trucking, retiring after many years with Consolidated Freightways. He was president of the Lakeview Acres Lot Association at Johnson Lake.

Survivors include his children, Kathy Scott, Danny Hardy, Lydia Pierson and Sabrina Bomont, all of Nebraska, Dallas Hardy, Karen Hardy and Lance Andres, all of Texas, and David Andres of Louisiana; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Richard Hardy of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Earl Hardy Jr. of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bertha Meusborn

LINCOLN -- Bertha M. Meusborn, 95, of Lincoln, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Haven Manor in Lincoln.

Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home of Albion and Cedar Rapids.

Donald E. Hammer

Donald E. Hammer, 81, of Grand Island died Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Skilled Care of Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Onamae Waddel officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery

Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Hospice or to the donor's choice.

Mr. Hammer was born Oct. 9, 1918, to Chris and Mabel (Smith) Hammer at Campbell. He grew up and attended school in Campbell. He moved to Roseland and began farming in 1947. He married Myrna Bundy Dec. 20, 1952, in Ashland. He farmed until 1957 when he began trucking. He retired in 1983 from Nebraska By-Products as a truck driver. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1986. Mrs. Hammer preceded him in death April 11, 1993.

Survivors include three sons, LaMoine of Mt. Vernon, Ill., Roland of Grand Island and Doug of Franklin; six daughters, LaVila (Mrs. Darrel) Brannagan of Doniphan, Sharon Wert of Aurora, Janice (Mrs. Dean) Sodomka of St. Joseph, Mo., Nancy (Mrs. Terry) Lemmert of Sutherland, Donna (Mrs. Joel) Epley of Columbus and Judy (Mrs. Charlie) Rea of Houston, Texas; 29 grandchildren and 211 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Delbert Hammer of Carbondale, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna, four sisters, one brother and one grandson.

John McAllister

John M. McAllister, 97, of Grand Island died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Wedgewood Care Center.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family will be receiving friends from 4 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Mr. McAllister was born May 27, 1903, to John and Ida Belle (Kramer) McAllister at Neligh. He attended school in Neligh.

He married Ruth Veed on Aug. 9, 1937, at Aurora. They lived in Omaha for 13 years, Central City for three years and Lincoln for eight years before settling in Grand Island. He worked as a jeweler and was an expert in watch repair. He served in the Civilian Air Patrol from 1946 until 1952 as a major and was involved helping in the blizzard of 1949 as well as searching for downed aircraft in the western part of the state.

He retired in 1966 and they moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where his interest in radio and electronics kept him busy. He taped the church services while in Grand Junction. Later they moved back to Grand Island where he enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the IOOF Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Gail Acree of Baton Rouge, La., Carrol McAllister of Edmond, Okla., and Jane McAllister of Doniphan; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, William of Seattle, Wash., Mark of Oelwein, Iowa, and Leland of Moline, Ill. and one sister, Helen McAllister of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul; and three sisters, Bessie McAllister, Mildred Johnson and Gertrude Muffly.

Edgar McMullen

Edgar G. McMullen, 80, of Grand Island died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate. Burial will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. McMullen was born Nov. 3, 1919, at Arthur to Herbert Leslie and Mary Belle (Andrews) McMullen. He attended a country school near Arthur and in Colorado Springs, Colo. He later worked at Meyer's Ranch near Arthur.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1941, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart in 1945.

He married Betty Giersdorf on Dec. 1, 1945, in Albion. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1946. Mr. McMullen was employed at the Farmers Union Coop Elevator for 23 years. He was then employed by the Hall County Highway Department until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Eagles and the Platt-Duetsche.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Grand Island; a son, Dan McMullen of Grand Island; two daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Dan) Huebner of Hastings and Mary M. (Mrs. Glenn) Conaway of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and his twin sister, Edith (Mrs. Preston) Stiles of Anaheim, Calif.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, John "Buster" McMullen, Donald McMullen, Arthur McMullen and Joel McMullen; and five sisters, Maude Huffman, Adeline Armstrong, Daisy Ferguson, Sarah Abernathy and Betty Jane McMullen.
