U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Josephine Harvey

Josephine V. Harvey, 88, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Tiffany Square Care Center.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Her body was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or the donor's choice.

Mrs. Harvey was born Oct. 8, 1913, at York to Joseph and Lela (Vanranken) Furman. She grew up and attended school in York, graduating in 1931. She worked for her father in the restaurant business following her education.

She married Arnold H. Harvey on June 12, 1935, in York. She worked as a cashier for Commercial National Bank in Grand Island for more than 25 years.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Elks Auxiliary and Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include four nieces, Linda McCormick, Kathy Dodd, Joan Knoeber and Annabel Houtes, and four nephews, Larry Judd, Dale Armstrong, Galen Jackson and Lyle McMindes.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Jane Judd and Janice Valle.

Ann Schneider

Ann L. Schneider, 88, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare at Park Place.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Prospect Hill cemetery in Norfolk. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with a 7 p.m. rosary.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral Parish Center.

Mrs. Schneider was born Dec. 13, 1913, at Falls City to Herman and Lena (Roesch) Huettner. She grew up and was educated in Falls City.

She married Clarence "Bud" Schneider on Nov. 25, 1940, at Falls City. The couple lived in Falls City, Albion and Dallas, Texas. Her husband was a Safeway grocery store manager and the couple also lived in Grand Island, Broken Bow, Wayne and Norfolk. After his death in 1976, she returned to Grand Island.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion, St. Michael's Altar Society, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Norfolk and Our Lady Of Lourds Hospital Auxiliary in Norfolk.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Kelly Schneider, Tom and Karen Schneider, Mike and Dianne Schneider and Jack and Janet Schneider, all of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Mark Sipple of Columbus; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Joyce Schneider in 1966, four brothers, Walter, Eddie, Paul and Dick, and two sisters, Alma and Chris.

Ernest Birkel

FULLERTON -- Ernest M. Birkel, 89, of Fullerton died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Richard Whiteing will officiate. Burial will be in Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a 7 p.m. rosary at the church in Fullerton.

Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Birkel was born Oct. 13, 1912, on the Birkel farm east of Fullerton to Jacob and Christina (Homan) Birkel. He attended District 37 School and Fullerton High School, graduating in 1930. He then attended Creighton University in Omaha for one year. After college, he returned to Fullerton to farm the Birkel farm from 1942 until he retired in 1977.

He married Alma M. Ebel on Nov. 9, 1948, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Bellwood. The couple lived on the Birkel farm until 1988 when they moved to Fullerton.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fullerton and served on the Council Creek Township as township treasurer for 42 years. He also helped organize the Delineation Painting Club with Ila Martin in Fullerton. He enjoyed oil painting and growing flowers at home and the church.

Survivors include his wife.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Clarence and Jake and a sister, Elizabeth Messing.

Duane Grossnicklaus

BARTLETT -- Duane Grossnicklaus, 73, of Bartlett died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chambers. The Rev. Allen Bergstrazer will officiate. Burial will be in Bartlett Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mr. Grossnicklaus was born March 25, 1928, at Platte Center to Charles and Minnie (Petersen) Grossnicklaus. In 1945, he was a rancher and moved from Platte Center to a ranch at Beaver Valley north of Bartlett.

He married Connie Jarman on June 12, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chambers.

He served on the Bartlett School Board and Rural Fire Department. He was on the Lutheran Church building committee in Bartlett and Chambers and had served in several offices. He just received a 25-year award for serving on the Education Service Unit No. 8 board of directors in Neligh, representing Wheeler County.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Larry Davis of Chambers, Karen and Dennis Pokorny of Bartlett and Sally and T.J. Novak of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lauretta Becher of Columbus and Mila Wilson of Pacific Grove, Calif.; and a brother, Merlin Grossnicklaus of Grand Island.

Harry Hall

FULLERTON -- Harry E. Hall, 80, of Fullerton, formerly of Ainsworth, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Fullerton.

Private burial will be at a later date.

Palmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hall was born Dec. 1, 1921, at Fullerton to Claude and Lulu Mae (Beebe) Hall. He grew up and farmed on the family farm until entering the Hoffmeister Homes in Genoa. He later entered Beverly Healthcare in 1994.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Darlene Hall of Ainsworth and a nephew of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Marie Klawonn

AURORA -- Marie Klawonn, 88, of Aurora died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church northeast of Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora.

Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur; a daughter and son-in-law, Alma and Dale Rohde; a daughter-in-law, Lova Klawonn; six grandchildren eight great-grandchildren and a half-sister, Alma Wall.

Victoria Kusek

RAVENNA -- Victoria Kusek, 95, of Ravenna died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City with a 4 p.m. rosary and will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. vigil.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.

Mrs. Kusek was born June 25, 1906, at Silver Creek to John and Stella (Dubas) Swertzic. She was raised in Merrick County and attended Polk County District 23 School.

She married Sylvester G. Kusek on May 9, 1933, at Krakow in Genoa. The couple lived on a farm near Loup City, later moving to Loup City in 1963. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and was a housekeeper for Dr. Bogle and the Owens and Daly families for many years. Her husband died May 6, 1984. She moved to Ravenna to be near her daughter. In 1997, she moved to Good Samaritan Center where she was involved in many activities.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna, St. Josaphat's Catholic Church of Loup City and Rosary Sodality, Council of Catholic Women of both parishes and Ravenna Flower Club. She enjoyed gardening, baking, polka music and her family.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Don Curtis of Ravenna and Marcia and Clarence Sonnenfeld of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alvin Swertzic of Genoa; and two sisters, Della Stanczyk of Silver Creek and Martha Gdowski of Fullerton.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two grandchildren; five brothers, Dominic, Adolph, Charles, John and Ben Swertzic; and an infant sister, Barbara Swertzic.
