U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Leona Sides

LOUP CITY -- Leona Sides, 88, of Loup City died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Revs. Cindy Altstadt and Roger Grim will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.

Memorials are suggested to Loup City's EMTs or First Presbyterian Church in Loup City.

Mrs. Sides was born Feb. 24, 1913, on the family farm near Loup City to John and Bertha (Dicke) Haesler. She attended Loup City Public School and was a 1931 graduate of Loup City High School. She taught at Sherman County rural schools.

She married Cloyce E. Sides on May 21, 1933, in Loup City. The couple lived and farmed in the Austin community until 1976 when they moved to Loup City. Her husband died Dec. 7, 1993.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was an active member and served as an elder, Presbyterian Women and Shermanette Garden Club, former 4-H leader and longtime member of Alpha Nu Extension Club. She enjoyed flowers, needle work and her family.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Alyce A. and Walter Schmidt of Fremont, Ohio, and Kathryn Wade of Fullerton, Mo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janet Sides of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Elliott of Stevenville, Mont., and Betty Wrehe of Loup City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Elmer and John Haesler and three sisters, Anna Cramer, Helen Haesler and Hazel Goodwin.

Ruth Urwin

ORD -- Ruth M. (Page) Urwin, 90, of Ord died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ord Christian Church. The Rev. Michael Chase will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the church or American Diabetes Association.

Dorothy Eoff

PAPILLION -- Dorothy M. Eoff, 89, of Papillion, formerly of Central City, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at Huntington Park Nursing Home in Papillion.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with the Reverend Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Eoff was born August 31, 1912 near Marquette to Otis and Lily (Ellis) King. After her father's death, she moved with her mother and sister to Hastings where she graduated from high school in 1929.

She married E.J. (Jamie) Eoff on June 16, 1941 in Gering. They lived in Central City until 1998 when they moved to Papillion. She worked for many years as a legal secretary for the Sampson, Armatys, Curry and Hummel Law Firm.

Mrs. Eoff was a 56-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of Order of Eastern Star, where she was a past Worthy Matron of the Arbor Chapter 200.

She enjoyed playing golf and bridge and traveling in their RV. Mr. Eoff died on June 22, 1999.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Paula of New York City and Cheri and Kent Braasch of Omaha; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Emily of Chihuahua City, Mexico, and Brad and Linda of Papillion; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Roy and Harold King, a sister, Helen Sanderson, and a grandson.

Roy Kieborz

NORTH PLATTE -- Roy H. Kieborz, 86, of North Platte died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Mortuary chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Leon Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Litchfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Kieborz was born April 27, 1915, at Litchfield to Bill and Hazel (Linden) Kieborz. He was educated in Litchfield.

He married Eva Mae Myers on Oct. 28, 1939, in Merna. The couple lived in Litchfield, then moved to Merna where he farmed. They later moved to Seneca where he did carpentry work and was a bricklayer. They returned to Merna until moving to North Platte in 1979.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and cars and being a handyman.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Nels Clang of North Platte, Cathy and Martin Templin of Louisville, Colo., and Dianna and Jim Wilson of Lincoln; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest and a sister, Almedia.

Lois Giberson

BOISE, Idaho -- Lois E. (Bedell) Giberson, 40, of Boise, Idaho, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 at Westminister Presbyterian Chapel in Lincoln. The Rev. Dr. Andrew McDonald will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 23 at First Presbyterian Church Columbarium in Grand Island.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Giberson was a medical assistant in Boise, Idaho. She served in the U.S. Army for four years and attended Grand Island Senior High School.

Survivors include her mother, Ruth E. Bedeel of Lincoln; a sister, Ruthann Nahorny of Lincoln; and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Cliff and Gladdy Bedell of Savannah, Ga., Paul and Susan Bedell of Richmond, Va., Bruce Bedell of Glen's Ferry, Idaho, and Doug and Vicky Bedell of Lincoln.

She was preceded by her father, Ernest E. Bedell.

Edward Janus

PHOENIX -- Edward A. Janus, 88, of Phoenix, formerly of Ord, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Phoenix.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Bob Rooney will officiate. Burial will be in Ord Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel with a rosary at 6 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.

Mr. Janus was born Sept. 21, 1913, on a farm west of Ord to John A. and Sophia (Dubas) Janus. He was a 1932 graduate of Ord High School.

He married Angie Zulkoski on Nov. 26, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elyria. The couple lived on a farm west of Ord until 1959 when they moved to town. He spent his adult years farming the Janus Farm west of Ord. The farm was sold in 1995 after being in the family for 102 years. He retired in 1981 from working in the Valley County ASCS office for 26 years. His wife died Aug. 9, 1982. In June 2000, he moved to Phoenix to be near his family. He lived in an Independent Care Facility until his hospitalization.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus and a charter member of Ord Elks Lodge 2371. He enjoyed cow collecting.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Oursland of Carefree, Ariz., and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister and a brother.

Jack Madsen

Jack S. Madsen, 71, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at St. Francis Skilled Care.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church or donor's choice.

Mr. Madsen was born Oct. 26, 1930, at Omaha to Herbert S. and Marguerite (Oliphant) Madsen. He was raised and attended school in Omaha, graduating from Omaha North High School in 1948. He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha for two years.

He married Patricia Christensen in 1951. He worked for Mutual of Omaha for 15 years. He later had his own State Farm Insurance Agency in Bellevue for 27 years. He retired in 1990.

He married Donna McGee Husmann on July 31, 1982, in La Platte. The couple lived in Bellevue before moving to Las Vegas in 1991. They moved to Grand Island in 2000.

He was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry 32nd degree of Omaha, Master Mason of Papillion 39, Rainbow Girls Dad, DeMolay Dad, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 365 at Plattsmouth, Platt-Duetsche Society and Saddle Club. He enjoyed boating, traveling, playing golf, old tractors and was an avid Nebraska football fan. During his illness, he enjoyed watching football, golf and auto racing on television.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; a son, Lawrence Madsen of Chicago; a daughter and son-in-law, Marla and George Bartenbach of Grand Island; a stepdaughter and her husband, Vikki and Danny Duel of Grand Island; a stepson and his wife, Dr. Doug and P.J. Husmann of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Marilyn Robson of Omaha.
