Marion Winchell

78, World War II Veteran

PARNELL, Mo. -- Marion W. Winchell, 78, of Parnell, Mo., formerly of the St. Paul area, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas G. Hyde will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul with military honors provided by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Winchell was born Jan. 10, 1923, at Archer to Harry and Frieda (Eckert) Winchell. He attended schools in Merrick County, graduating from Palmer High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry in France during World War II.

After returning home, he spent several years driving trucks and farming in the St. Paul area. After the death of his mother in 1977, he moved to St. Paul and took care of his father until his death in 1979. He then moved to Parnell, Mo. He entered the VA Hospital in Omaha in late November 2001. At the time of his death he was a patient at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed raising exotic birds and various small animals until a severe heart attack in 1996 forcing him to limit his many activities, including helping people.

Survivors include a sister, Onilee Kilpatrick of Simi Valley, Calif.

'Peg' Crabtree

92, Cafe owner

Thresia I. "Peg" Crabtree, 92, of Grand Island died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare at Park Place.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grand Island City Cemetery, with the Rev. Karen Kennerly officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crabtree was born July 28, 1909, in Arcadia to Oscar and Ida (Peterson) Thelander. She grew up and attended school in Arcadia.

She married LaVern "Bus" Crabtree on July 16, 1926, in Grand Island. They owned and operated the Conoco Café for many years.

Survivors include one sister, Edith Hogue of King City, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and five sisters.

June Veach

June Marie Veach, 45, of Grand Island died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare Park Place in Grand Island.

Services will be Wednesday in Marianna, Fla. Burial will be in the Lipford cemetery in Marianna.

Kleine Funeral Home and James and James Funeral Home in Marianna are in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Veach was born Nov. 21, 1956, in Madison, Fla., to Clarence and Blanche (Porter) Boggs. She grew up and attended school in Auburndale, Fla.

She married Marvin Veach on Jan. 8, 1993, in Marianna. They lived in Clinton, Mass., where she worked for the Weetibix Manufacturing Company for 16 years.

They moved to Marquette in October 1999. After she became ill, she moved to Beverly Healthcare Park Place in January 2000 where she lived until her death.

She enjoyed working in her flower garden and being with family.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Brandon Boggs; three stepdaughters; one stepson; nine step grandchildren; and one brother, Jim Boggs of Marianna.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Bill Fann

BROKEN BOW -- William C. "Bill" Fann, 78, of Broken Bow died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, with the Rev. Jim Stark officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Fann was born June 2, 1923, in Oakland, Calif., to Clarence and Katherine (Bule) Burge. When he was young, his parents divorced. His mother married George Fann, and George Fann adopted Bill Fann. He attended school in Oakland, Calif., and enlisted in the U.S. Army after his schooling, where he served from August 1941 to August 1946.

He attended business school in Lincoln.

He married Iva Britton. They lived in Taylor and Broken Bow. He operated auto repair shops in Taylor and Sargent.

He married Verlene "Sammy" Snell at Alameda, Calif., on Jan. 1, 1975. They lived in California, including the San Francisco-Oakland Bay area, where he worked as a pickup truck salesman.

The couple moved to Broken Bow in 1989. He worked at Ranchland Ford for a short time. He moved to Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow on Jan. 4, 2001.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Broken Bow Elks Lodge No. 1688. He enjoyed racing stock cars and modified cars, which he did for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rex and Melody Fann of Tahlequah, Okla., and Scott and Donna Fann of Little Rock, Ark.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, and one sister, Barbara Kuntz.

Linda Spellman

SHELTON -- Linda M. Spellman, 60, of Shelton, formerly of Kearney, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. The Revs. Paul Collins and Thomas Mullowney will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church with a funeral vigil and rosary at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Sacred Heart building fund.

O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Spellman was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Auburn to Archie and Opal (Adams) Keup. She grew up in Gibbon and was a graduate of Gibbon High School.

She married Gary L. Spellman on Sept. 12, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. They lived in Cozad for 25 years, where she worked for Mead Lumber. After that, they lived in Kearney for nine years, where she worked for Wal-Mart, K mart and the Head Start program. They lived in the Shelton area for the past seven years. She was a "grandma" for the second-grade class at Shelton schools. She had been disabled the past 2 years.

She was a member of the church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Scott of Lees Summit, Mo.; one daughter, Kristy Kennedy of Shelton; three brothers, Rodney of Richmond, Ill., Eldon of Puyallup, Wash., and Allan of Kearney; six sisters, Marylin Broekemeier and Gail Keup, both of Gibbon, Judy Rose of Arnold, Mo., Nita Krueger of Ansley, Sue Hawke of Broken Bow and Kathy Murr of Kenesaw; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Alvin Wescoat

LEXINGTON -- Alvin L. Wescoat, 72, of Lexington died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with the Rev. Michael Gruhn officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Mr. Wescoat was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Riverton to Charles and Gladys (Kugler) Wescoat.

He married Eunice A. Kranau at Phillipsburg, Kan., on May 12, 1955. He worked for Bill McKee Farming, Nis Jensen Farming and several area hay mills.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington.

Survivors include one son, David Wescoat of Alda; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vera and Lonnie McIntosh of Grand Island and Sherry and Merlin Thaden of Lexington; one sister, Ethel Farrens of Red Cloud; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willis.
