U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Elizabeth Lenners

BEATRICE -- Elizabeth Lenners, 87, of Beatrice died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Beatrice Community Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of rural Beatrice. The Rev. Dale Barnett will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Home cemetery at Beatrice. A family prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Fox Funeral Home in Beatrice.

Visitation will be until 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mrs. Lenners was born on Dec. 26, 1911, at rural Pickrell.

She married Renken Lenners on Feb. 23, 1930, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of rural Beatrice. They lived and farmed near Filley for 42 years before moving to Beatrice in 1972.

She was a cook for the Virginia and Rockford school systems, did custom sewing and made numerous wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses.

She was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church of Pickrell and was currently a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of rural Beatrice.

She enjoyed quilting and was a member of the church's Afternoon Circle.

Survivors include four sons, Raymond of Beatrice, Robert of Grand Island and Eugene and Duane, both of Filley; three daughters, Nelvadene (Mrs. Glenn) Schwab of Beatrice and Marilyn (Mrs. Gaylan) Koch and Leona (Mrs. Duane) Siems, both of DeWitt; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie (Mrs. Clarence) Frerichs of Beatrice; a stepbrother, Hubert Rathe of Beatrice; and a stepsister, Bertha Meints of Beatrice.

Her husband died on Jan. 19, 1996. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Schuster; a son, Virgil Lenners; four grandchildren; and a brother, Henry Meints.

Charles Coppersmith

80, World War II veteran

Charles T. Coppersmith, 80, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Coppersmith was born Oct. 20, 1921, on the family farm north of Grainton to Harlin and Chlora (Tatum) Coppersmith. He attended country school and worked on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army on June 20, 1942, at Fort Warren, Wyo. He served with the Combat Engineers in Europe from shortly after D-Day until the end of the war. He was honorably discharged Nov. 30, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

He then returned to farming near Grainton until he was selected for a serviceman's homestead near Rupert, Idaho. He farmed there for many years.

He married Pauline Wiebe on Aug. 22, 1975, in Grant. He worked at Cargill seed for 10 years and was also employed by Third City Livestock. He then worked for Ditch Witch for five years and then as a janitor for Northwest High School. He was then the owner and operator of the Vine Street Tavern until he retired in 1987.

He was a member of the Eagles Club. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling, fishing and spending time in the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Michael and Mary Ann Wiebe of Grand Island; three stepdaughters and stepson-in-law, Paula Nolte, Pamela and James Dreher and Phyllis Wiebe, all of Grand Island; 15 step grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Virginia Coppersmith of Elsie and Lynn and Phyllis Coppersmith of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Dale Hanson of Elsie, Lela and Glenn Newberry of Nampa, Idaho, and Beverly Terry of San Bernadino, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Betty Coppersmith of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald.

Anita Cory

Anita Cory, 90, of Grand Island died Friday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Tiffany Square Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Private burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The casket will be closed.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Cory was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Randolph, Iowa, to Leonard O. and Bertha M. (Sells) Johnston. She lived in North Platte and Lincoln where she completed elementary and high school. She then studied at the Conservatory of Music. She played violin in the University of Symphony and many string instrumental groups.

She married Dr. Howard Royer on Sept. 7, 1929, in Lincoln. The couple lived in Scotia for several years, where her husband practiced medicine before moving to Grand Island. Her husband died in 1948.

She later married Jack R. Cory on Feb. 2, 1951, in Grand Island.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a 65-year member of Riverside Golf Club. She was active in various women's clubs, Episcopal Church groups, medical auxiliaries and held local and state offices in them. For a number of years, she was a member of Grand Island Sketch Club and served as the secretary, treasurer and president. She completed 25 years of service to Grand Island Chapter of the American Red Cross, where she was a volunteer chairman. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing and painting.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Cory, a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dr. Eugene T. Everett of Santa Barbara, Calif., four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Howard Royer, a daughter, Janet Ballard, an infant son, two brothers, a sister and two grandchildren.

Ella Mae Peterson

Ella Mae Peterson, 72, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church with a 7 p.m. rosary.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peterson was born June 25, 1929, in Emmet to Francis and Mae (Stortz) Clark. She attended school in O'Neill and graduated from O'Neill High School in 1946.

She married George W. "Pete" Peterson on Sept. 25, 1947, in O'Neill. The couple lived most of their married life in Grand Island. Her husband died in 2000.

She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. She enjoyed cross stitching and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, John and Cathy Peterson of Memphis, Tenn., Thomas and Rosey Peterson of Hastings, Robert and Chris Peterson of Grand Island, William and Mary Peterson of Kansas City, Kan., and Scott Peterson of Grand Island; four daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Otte of Wentzville, Mo., and Sharon and Steven Yenny, Catherine and Leo Tylkowski and Mary and Steve Mettenbrink, all of Grand Island; 28 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald Clark of O'Neill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Richard Clark, and a sister, Dorothy Donohoe.

Elizabeth Wild

86, Farmer, Homemaker and Extension agent

Elizabeth E. Wild, 86, of Grand Island, formerly of Fremont, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at the Tiffany Square Care Center.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Curtis Holzworth will officiate. Additional services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Fremont. The Rev. Rob Spykstra will officiate. Burial will be at the Platteville Cemetery, south of Fremont.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Evangelical Free Church in Fremont or the family.

Mrs. Wild was born on Nov. 21, 1915, on a farm near Roca to Christian and Frederika (Nagel) Hornung. She attended rural Lancaster County School and graduated from College View High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she received a bacholer's degree in home economics.

She married Homer L. Wild on Dec. 9, 1950, in Lincoln. She was a farmer's wife, homemaker and a home extension agent in Saunders County for approximately 23 years. She also taught home economics in Harvard for two years and was employed by the Farm and Home Administration in McCook during World War II.

Mrs. Wild was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Fremont. She enjoyed flowers and gardening and was a member of an extension club for many years. She had lived at Tiffany Square Care Center for a year-and-a-half.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Jolene Wild of Grand Island; one granddaughter; two step-daughters and a stepson-in-law, Lois and Bryan Johnson of Moline, Ill., and Winona Webb of Volant, Penn.; a step-son and stepdaughter-in-law, Gene and Betty Wild of Zionsville, Ill.; numerous step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and one brother, Arthur Hornumg of Roca.

She was proceeded in death by her husband in 1999.
