He opposed the rise of fascism in Spain by supporting the Abraham Lincoln Brigades and enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving as a Lieutenant in Italy, France and Northern Africa.

This stimulated his lifelong interest in foreign cultures, which he pursued as a Fulbright Scholar in Italy and Malta and as a visiting scholar in London, Paris, Peking and the Hague. His last trip was to Cuba. He loved good cooking, especially Mary’s, and fine wine.

A prominent opponent of the Vietnam War and militarism, dad defended Social Security and fought for lower-cost prescription drugs."

A founding member and two-time president of UNH’s American Association of University Professors, he led efforts to win collective bargaining. He was AAUP teacher of the year in 1961. "Dad’s commitment to working people and civil rights was a family tradition, so he was especially proud that all his children are active unionists," said son Michael.

He played a mean piano, taught the history of Jazz and served as the President of the Seacoast Jazz Society. He was an avid sports fan, rooting for Jackie Robinson’s Brooklyn Dodgers and at his grandchildren’s soccer and ice hockey games.
