ELBERT L. MERRELL, 84, of Middletown died May 11 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Keyport, he had been a resident of Middletown since 1954. Mr. Merrell was a retired chief supply manager at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, where he worked for 32 years. He served with the U.S.. Army during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2179, Middletown. Mr. Merrell is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dorothea Phillips Merrell of Middletown; two sisters, Dorothy Lambertson of Freehold and Sarah Allen of Eatontown; one niece; and one nephew. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.

DENISE SHARROCK DeVITO, 38, of Rumson died May 4 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City. Born in Bayonne, she lived in Hoboken and Belmar before moving to Rumson 11 years ago. Mrs. DeVito was a homemaker. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Her memberships included CPC Behavioral Foundation, Middletown, where she was also past president and a current board member of Campership; a board member of Clean Ocean Action, Sandy Hook; and previous board member for the SPCA of Monmouth County, Eatontown. She was predeceased by her father, John Sharrock. Mrs. DeVito is survived by her husband of 15 years, Mark A. DeVito of Rumson; her son, Jake DeVito of Rumson; two daughters, Janie E. DeVito and Jesse M. DeVito, both Rumson; her mother, Carolyn Sharrock of Belmar; her mother-in-law, Barbara DeVito of Colts Neck; her brother-in-law and his wife, Michael and Patti DeVito of Metuchen; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Jackie and Drew Clark of Spring Lake Heights, Nicole Sharrock of Atlantic Highlands, and Aimee Sharrock of Belmar; and a niece and two nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Interment was at Holmdel Cemetery Mausoleum. ROBERT E. VALENTINE, 66, of Freehold died May 1. He worked as a security guard for Freehold Raceway for 16 years. Surviving are his mother, Sarah; two sons; three daughters; and seven grandchildren.

BERNICE "BEE" J. TOYNBEE, 86, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died May 2 at Manor Care of Dunedin, Dunedin, Fla. Born in Elizabeth, she lived in Freehold for 22 years before moving to Florida in 1970. She was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Holiday, Fla.; the Forest Hills Civic Club and Forest Hills Hobby Club, both of Holiday; and the Polish Legion of American Veterans, Dennis A. Orloski Post No. 184, Elfers, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Louis Toynbee, in 1969; and a son, Richard Toynbee, in 1984. Surviving are a daughter, Lorraine Ingham of Palm Harbor; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Interment was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick 08902.

GEORGE H. ASCOUGH, 88, of Farmingdale died May 4 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Bayonne, he was a lifelong resident of the Farmingdale-Howell area. He was the first attendance officer at Howell High School, where he worked for 18 years before retiring in 1982. Prior to that, he was the manager of D&G Feed and Coal Co., Farmingdale, for more than 30 years. He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church in Wall. He was a member of the Farmingdale Borough Council from 1977 until 1991, serving as council president the last four years of his term. He was an active member and past president of the Farmingdale-Howell Lions Club for more than 30 years. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Julie C. Ascough of Farmingdale; two daughters and a son-in-law, Janet and Robert Grant of Neptune and Margaret Mehok of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Interment was in Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church, 3402 Woodfield Ave., Wall, 07719, or to the Farmingdale-Howell Lions Club.

GLORIA "DOLLY" C. McGINN, 64, of Farmingdale died May 8 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she moved to Farmingdale 15 years ago. She was a telephone receptionist for K. Hovnanian, Red Bank, retiring in 2000. She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Howell. She was a member of the cancer support group at Jersey Shore Medical Center. She is survived by a sister, Rosemary Amaral of Farmingdale; a niece and a nephew; and several grandnieces and -nephews. Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Asbury Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Jersey Shore Medical Center Foundation, 1945 Route 33, Neptune 07753.

STANZIO LOUIS GRIECO, 71, of Manchester died April 28 at Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he resided in River Vale for 33 years prior to moving to Manchester eight years ago. He was a compliance examiner at the National Association of Securities Dealers, New York City, for 15 years, retiring in 1995. He served with the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Rosina Grieco of Manchester; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Laura Grieco of Manalapan, and Guy and Lisa Grieco of Matawan; his brother, John Grieco of Laughlin, Nev.; his sister, Concetta Grieco of Suffern, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manala-pan. Interment was at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.

JUDY D. LaPORTE, 59, of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., died April 29 at Overlook Hospital, Summit. Born in Troy, N.Y., she resided in Hazlet and Toms River prior to moving to Dingmans Ferry 1.5 years ago. She was an executive secretary at Puerto Rico Marine Management, Port Elizabeth, for 20 years, retiring in 2002. She was predeceased by her father, John S. Rever. She is survived by her mother, Eva Viscusi Rever of Toms River; her husband, Ralph L. LaPorte of Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; her daughter, Robin Jill Planko of Freehold; two sons, Glenn Michael LaPorte of Old Bridge, and Matthew John LaPorte of Keyport; two sisters, Sandy Kropkowski of Maryland, and Terri Norris of Virginia; and four grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. Entombment was at St. Joseph’s Mausoleum, Keyport.

FLORENCE PLOTKIN, 78, a resident of the Covered Bridge adult community, Manalapan, died April 23 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Manalapan two years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Rubin, in 2000 Surviving are a son a daughter-in-law, Alan and Caroline of Staten Island, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Perry and Dr. Leslie Sofjka of Freehold; and two grandchildren. Interment was in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin section of Woodbridge.

EVELYN M. FOWLES, 76, of Keansburg died April 25 in Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Keansburg for the last 35 years. She was a coffee shop manager for Forte Holding’s Inc., New York, N.Y., for 40 years before retiring. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Fowles, in 1980. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Toni Fowles of Howell, and Robert and Mary Lynn Fowles of Seaford; a sister, Helen Giaramita of Staten Island, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. Interment was in the Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville.
