Dr. Armand E. Bedikian, 70, anesthesiologist, aided quake victims

Services for Dr. Armand E. Bedikian, 70, of Holmdel will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in St. Mary Armenian Church, 200 W. Mount Pleasant Ave., Livingston. Arrangements are by the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston.

Dr. Bedikian died Friday in Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla.

He was the director of the anesthesia department and respiratory care at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, where he worked for 26 years before retiring in 1994. Earlier, Dr. Bedikian taught at Rutgers University in affiliation with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.

He earned a bachelor’s degree with honors from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1953, and a medical degree with honors from Temple University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, in 1957.

A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, Dr. Bedikian served as the anesthesia consultant to the Atlantic Amphibious Assault Forces in Little Creek, Va. He also served as director of anesthesia at Naval Hospital in St. Albans, N.Y., with the rank of lieutenant commander.

He was a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a fellow of the American College of Anesthesiology.

He also was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, both societies for excellence in research and testing.

Dr. Bedikian was a past president of the medical staff at Bayshore Community Hospital. He was elected “Man of the Year” in 1998 by the Women’s Guild of St. Stepanos Armenian Church, Elberon, for his charity work.

Throughout his life, he made 16 trips to Armenia to help the survivors of the 1989 earthquake.

In 1989, Dr. Bedikian coordinated the largest airlift of 49 earthquake victims to the United States for medical care and brought four children with him to Bayshore Community Hospital for treatment with crush injuries and amputations.

While serving as medical director of Medical Outreach for Armenians East in 1990, he was a member of a surgical team which airlifted to Soviet Armenia and Soviet Georgia. He performed 19 open heart operations, 10 of them on critically ill children, in conjunction with the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills.

All the high tech equipment was left behind and donated to the Institute in Yerevan, which is still being used today. A television documentary film was made with Leonard Nimoy narrating.

Dr. Bedikian continued to travel to Armenia bringing medical supplies and assistance to various hospitals and field hospitals of the Nagorno-Karabagh War.

He established a non-profit charitable corporation to aid and educate the children of Armenia. Dr. Bedikian supported three schools - the Daniel Varoujan School with 1,700 students, the Sebastia Elementary School with 700 children and the Zinvori Mair Prep School for the orphans of the killed fighting forces.

Dr. Bedikian also provided the children with warm winter clothing and boots. He donated computers, minivans for teachers and children to attend school and money for teacher salaries above the government stipend.

Born in Newark, he lived in Holmdel for many years and also maintained a residence in Delray Beach, Fla.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Victoria Wysochansky.

Joan E. Burgess, married 47 years

Joan E. Burgess, 67, of Bethlehem Township, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 21, in the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice at St. Luke’s.

She worked as a retail cashier at the CVS Pharmacy on Easton Avenue in Bethlehem. Before that, she worked at the former Woolworth’s on Main Street in Bethlehem.

Born Feb. 4, 1934, in Slatington, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Williams Warren.

She was a member of East Hill Moravian Church in Bethlehem.

She was a graduate of Allen High School in Allentown.

She and her husband, John J. Jr., observed their 47th wedding anniversary Oct. 2.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Gary of Atlanta, Ga., William of Bethlehem, and Craig, at home; a daughter, Diane Koch of Allentown; a brother, Richard Wert of Cetronia; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church, 1830 Butztown Road, Bethlehem. Call from 10 a.m. Wednesday to time of services in the church.

Burial will be in Bethlehem Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem, is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests memorials to the hospice, 709 Delaware Ave., Bethlehem, PA 18015; or to the church, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

Miriam S. Ng

Services for Mrs. Miriam S. Ng, 45, of Hillside will be at 7:30 o'clock Friday evening at the Haeberle & Barth Colonial Home, 1100 Pine Ave., Union.

Mrs. Ng died Monday at home.

She was a Sunday School teacher at the Overseas Chinese Mission in Chinatown, N.Y., an officer of the Hillside Parent-Teacher Association and was involved with Bible Study Fellowship in Springfield, where she was a children's leader.

Mrs. Ng was a graduate of Malone College in Canton, Ohio.

Born in Wooster, Ohio, she lived in the Bronx before moving to Hillside 16 years ago.

Surviving are her husband, Simon; a son, Michael; a daughter, Julie; her parents, Atlee and Vera Weaver; sisters, Ruby Kuhns, Alice Shelter Mary Helen Heinbaugh, Shirley Ross and Betty Troyer, and brothers, Ivan, Harold, Art and John Weaver.

Joseph T. Swigon

A Mass for Joseph T. Swigon, 86, of Cedar Grove will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove, after the funeral from the Shooks Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave.

Mr. Swigon, who died Sunday in St. Josephs Medical Center, Paterson, was a machine setter with the Western Electric Co., Kearny, for 38 years before retiring 21 years ago.

He was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Cedar Grove, about 50 years ago and past treasurer of the Cedar Grove Senior Citizens Club.

Born in Jersey City, he moved to Cedar Grove in 1951.

Mr. Swigon is survived by Helen, his wife of 60 years; daughters, Emelia Catherine Maloid and Frances Johnson; brothers, Charles and Harold; sisters, Mae Gadomski and Lillian Babick; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
