Adele S. Trobe, 88, social work leader

Saturday, March 30, 2002

Adele S. Trobe, an energetic social work executive and advocate for progressive causes, died yesterday at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, Pa. She was 88.

Her career jobs, in northern New Jersey and New York City, focused on women's reproductive health and services for the aged, but after retiring she continued to pursue interests that included improved standards for retirement communities and a better-informed electorate.

Mrs. Trobe was a daughter of a wealthy jewelry manufacturer. She was born in Yonkers, N.Y., and graduated from Smith College in 1934 but then volunteered to work at a tuberculosis sanitarium in West Virginia.

In 1938, Adele Shiman attended a birthday party in Manhattan where she met a charming man with a Sunday New York Times tucked under his arm. A week later she was tucked under his arm on the way to the theater. A few weeks later the man, Jacob Trobe, asked her to marry him. The ceremony took place at a lakeside cottage in Maine that August.

Mrs. Trobe graduated from Columbia University's Graduate School of Social Work in 1940 and, after the births of two children, worked for Planned Parenthood of Essex County. As executive director from 1959 to 1963, she promoted a rapid expansion of services and worked to break down traditional community barriers to family planning. Mrs. Trobe lived in South Orange for 20 years before moving to New York City in 1963.

While living in New York, Mrs. Trobe was associate director of field services for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Mrs. Trobe's interest in problems of the elderly were reflected in her work with the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, based in New York. She was a district director from 1972 to 1977 for Brooklyn and then Manhattan. After retirement, living in Somers, Westchester County, N.Y., she was appointed by Gov. Mario Cuomo to a 12-member board advising the state on licensing of continuing-care retirement communities.

The political process always was a concern of hers. She worked for a decade for the League of Women Voters of South Orange, serving as its president from 1955 to 1957. Later, in Somers, she worked with the league in that community. After moving to The Quadrangle, a retirement community in Haverford, Pa., in 1993, she directed a social issues program. Drawing on the rich mix of retired professionals there, and some outsiders, she arranged presentations and discussions of contemporary topics twice a month for more than five years.

Despite the fast pace she set for herself in virtually everything she did, Mrs. Trobe took pleasure in cooking and especially enjoyed using foreign recipes. She squeezed fresh orange juice every morning. During the holidays, she was careful, in preparing gifts for her grandchildren, to wrap each present separately, no matter its size. That included individual batteries for toys.

Mrs. Trobe traveled frequently with her husband, Jacob, also a social work executive, and was able to refresh her abilities to speak Greek, Italian, French, Spanish and German. When no longer able to travel, she practiced by counting laps in the pool at The Quadrangle in those languages.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Trobe leaves a daughter, Toni Kestenbaum of Glenside, Pa.; a son, Robert, of Upper Saddle River, and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Planned Parenthood, Smith College or the League of Women Voters.
