HELEN BARBELLA, of Kearny, died on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. She was 85. She was a lifelong Kearny resident. She died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. Funeral services were conducted by the Thiele Family Funeral Home, 241 Kearny Ave., Kearny. A mass will be held in St. Cecilia's Church, Kearny.

JULIA E. BILLEY (nee Hazuda), of Ocean Gate, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003. She was 74. Born in Pennsylvania, she lived in Passaic before moving to Newark for 15 years. She also lived in San Bernardino, Calif. for three years before moving to Kearny, where she lived for 10 years. After moving from Kearny, she lived in Lacey Township for 15 years before moving to Ocean Gate. She worked at Herby K's Restaurant, Broad and Market streets, Newark for 10 years. She also worked as a waitress at the North Arlington Diner for five years and also served banquets. Devoted mother of Brenda, Nancy, Susan and the late Carol; cherished grandmother of Richard, Joseph, Renee, Mark Jr. and Michael and seven great-grandchildren; dear sister of Irene, Dottie, Kitty, Betty and Michael; aunt to many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, make donations to the family in memory of
Julia c/o the funeral home.

PASQUALE PATSY CAPOZZI, of East Newark, died on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. He was 86. Born in Newark, he lived there before moving to East Newark 74 years ago. He died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He worked as an assembly man at Otis Elevator, Harrison, for 33 years before retiring in 1978 and then for Shop Rite in Kearny for 20 years, retiring in 1998. He was an Army veteran of the 77th Division in World War II, serving from 1942 to 1945 in the Army Corps of Engineers in the South Pacific Theatre, including the Philippines and Guam. He received a Bronze Star. He was a member and treasurer of Entre-Nous of East Newark. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Anthony's Church, East Newark and worked as an usher there for many years. Beloved husband of Mary R. (nee Pizzano); devoted father of Joseph and Connie, Patrick, Michael and Cathy, Maria and Robert Rokoszak; cherished grandfather of Melissa, Justin, Nicholas, Bryan, Dana, Christian and Brianna; dear brother of Joeph, Mary A. and late Minnie Spataro, Vincent, Catherine Stanish and Daniel; uncle to many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in St. Anthony's Church, East Newark. Entombment was in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, make donations in memory of Patsy to the St. Barnabas Hospice Center, Livingston, c/o the funeral home.

MICHAEL CARTY, of Kearny, died on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. He was 69. Born in Nogra Kinvara County Galway, Ireland, he lived in Bloomfield before moving to Kearny in 1967. He died in Clara Maass Continuing Care Center, Belleville. He served in the L.D.F. Irish Army and was an iron worker for local 11 in Newark for 25 years, retiring in 1991. Husband of Bridie (nee Henry); father of Michael P. and Patrick H. Carty; brother of Joseph, John, Teresa and Julia Carty, Elizabeth O'Connor, Mary How, Nonie Fitzhenry and Bridie Donaldson. He is also survived by his grandchildren Samantha Mary and Michael Patrick. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Stephen's Church, Kearny. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

KENNETH JOHN CHAPLAUSKE, of New York City, died on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003. He was 47.
Born in Newark, he lived there before moving to Kearny for 10 years. He lived in the East Village in New York City for the last 15 years. He died at St. Vincent's Hospital, Staten Island, NY. He was a self employed master carpenter who built and finished bars in restaurants in New York City including Cyros and Chachi's in Rockefeller Center and many Irish bars. He was a cabinet maker who designed and installed many condominium kitchens in Bernardsville, N.J. and Jersey City. He worked on a two-year project to convert an old school into split level homes in Jersey City and he did carpentry work on the 14th Street Arts Center and Canal Jeans, both
in New York City. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A private cremation followed.

MALINDA H. CONNELLY (nee Hemion), of West Orange, died on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003. She was 92. Born in Kearny, she lived there for 58 years before moving to West Orange. She died at home. She was a secretary for Western Electric in Kearny for 18 years before retiring in 1945. She was past president of Mount Vernon School, Irvington; Lincoln Junior High in Kearny; Kearny AARP Chapter 879 Arlington Women's Club; West Hudson Business and Professional Women's Club; Arlington Players Club, all of Kearny and East Orange Player's Club. She was also a member of the North Jersey Life Members Club, Harmony Club and Henrietta Benstead Club, all of Kearny; Our Lady of Lourdes Senior Club in West Orange and Verona Service League. She volunteered at West Hudson Hospital for 14 years. Wife of the late Thomas F. Cleary and Peter F. Connelly; mother of Thomas F. Cleary; sister of the late Norman J. Hemion and sister-in-law of Isabelle Hemion. She is also survived by a dear friend, Dorothy Cronrath and dear neighbor Joan Knapp. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Kearny.

RALPH A. FERRAIOLI, of Kearny, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003. He was 73. He was a lifelong resident of Kearny. He died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He retired eight years ago after 40 years as a water meter reader for the Town of Kearny. He also worked many years as a bartender at Teddy's Lounge in Kearny. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was past commander of American Legion Post #99, charter member of the Halstead Street Social and Athletic Club, member of the USS Daly DD519 Association, National Skeet Shooting Association and 40 & 8 Association, United Veterans Association and Knights of Columbus #6928, all of Kearny. Beloved husband for 43 years of Josephine (nee Hill); devoted father of Susan Lennon and her husband, Thomas; dear brother of Theodore and Richard; cherished grandfather of Thomas Patrick (the Kid) Lennon and dear friend of Anthony Lumeniello and Joseph Petito. Funeral services were conducted by the Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Stephen's Church, Kearny. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to FMBA Local #18 or Exempt Firemen's Fund, c/o the funeral
home would be appreciated.
