JOHN STEPHEN DiMAIO, 35, of Brick died Nov. 7, 2002 in Community Medical Center, Toms River. He was an independent carpet installer. Born in Point Pleasant, he lived in the Shore area all his life. Surviving are two brothers, Alan DiMaio of Lakewood, and Anthony DiMaio of Brick; three sisters, Sharon Coryell and Andrea DiMaio, both of Brick, and Denise DiMaio of Toms River; his former wife, Maria DiMaio of Toms River; and several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Toms River.

BENNIE LEE ELLIS, 90, of Burgess, Va., formerly of Brick, died Nov. 4, 2002. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John B. and Carole Ellis of Burgess; two sisters, Lenora Fulcher of Reedville, Va., and Ann Harcum of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

JUDITH ANN MARCINKIEWICZ SMITH, 41, of Brick, died Nov. 3, 2002 at Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Hospital, Brick. She was a parishioner of St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, Brick. Born in Clifton, she lived in Toms River before moving to Brick 14 years ago. Surviving are her husband of 14 years, Thomas Michael Sr.; a son, Thomas Michael Jr.; her parents, Frank and Margo Marcinkiewicz of Toms River; a brother, Frank James Marcinkiewicz of New Port Richey, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Arrangements were under the direction of O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick. A Mass was offered at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, Brick. Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Toms River. Memorial donations may be made to St. Dominic’s Church, 250 Old Squad Road, Brick 08724.

MARGARET KOHRS SHANNON, 83, of Brick, died Nov. 3, 2002 at Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Hospital, Brick. Mrs. Shannon was a homemaker. She was a communicant of Visitation Church, Brick. Born in New York City, she lived in Hoboken before moving to Brick in 1958. Mrs. Shannon was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, 29 years ago. Surviving are a son, Joseph J. Shannon of Brick; five daughters, Noreen Napolitano of Toms River, Madeline Gallo of Anaheim, Calif., Patricia Litts of Brevard, N.C., Margaret Venture of California, and Mary Hoffman of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were under the direction of Laurelton Memorial Funeral Home, Brick. A Mass was offered at Visitation Church, Brick. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lakewood.

NICOLA "NIKKI" DAWE, 51, of Brick, died Nov. 3, 2002 at home. She was born in South Africa, where she was raised until the age of 7. She then lived in South Orange and moved to Maplewood and Idaho before moving to Brick in 1999. Before her disability, she was a registered nurse. Surviving are her parents, Kenneth and Moyra of Brielle; her life partner since 1989, Jae Emery-Dawe of Brick; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Kerry and Maggie Dawe of Roselle Park, and Martin Dawe and his partner, Chris, of Atlanta; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Nina Dawe of Tyringham, Mass., and Colette and Robert Schoreder of Brick; two nieces and two nephews, Ken, Jessica and Britney Dawe, and Matthew Schoreder; and her partner’s family, Amberly and Hunter Eck, Thomas and Susan Emery, Cheryl and Danny Morrow, and Russell and Tammy Emery, all of Georgia, and Lewis and Leanne Emery of Maryland. A gathering of the celebration of life was held at O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick. Interment was private.

MILDRED BORNEMANN, 78, of Brick died Nov. 3, 2002 in the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick division. She was born in Jersey City and lived in Woodbridge before moving to Brick in 1987. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward H. Bornemann, in 1966. Surviving are four sons, Edward H. Jr. of Williamsport, Pa., Richard of Woodbridge, Gerard of Brick and Brian of Union Beach; three daughters, Joanne Rinaldi of Lakewood, Janice Murphy of Laurence Harbor and Eileen Delatour of Hillsboro; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, Toms River. Entombment was in Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.

VIRGINIA R. BACKLE, 75, of Brick died Nov. 1, 2002 in Meridian Nursing Home, Brick. Born in North Bergen, she lived in West New York before moving to Brick 24 years ago. She was a bookkeeper at the DiFeo Buick dealership, West New York, for 40 years, retiring in 1997. Afterward, she worked as a clerk at Macy’s in the Ocean County Mall, Toms River. She was a communicant of St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, Brick. Surviving are her husband, Frank J.; a son, Frank. J. Jr. of Bear, Del.; a sister, Lillian Rosenberg of Brick; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A Mass was offered at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, Brick. Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Englewood.

DOROTHY MERKEL BLUHM, 90, of Spotswood, formerly of Brick, died Nov. 10, 2002 at St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in North Bergen, Mrs. Bluhm resided in Brick Township for 25 years before moving to Spotswood two years ago. She was a volunteer at Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Hospital, in the hospital’s thrift store. Mrs. Bluhm was predeceased by her husband, Albert, in 1972; and two daughters, Margaret and Lorraine. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Karol Bluhm of Spotswood; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held in the Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick. A Mass was offered at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. Interment was in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

JOHN TIMOTHY "TIM" CRONIN of Point Pleasant Beach died Nov. 10, 2002 in Meridian Hospice, Brick. Born in Camden, he grew up in Oaklyn and Audubon, later settling in Point Pleasant Beach. Mr. Cronin was the program development specialist for the New Jersey Deaf Project and Independent Living Programs for the state of New Jersey. Prior to assuming this position, he was a vocational rehabilitation specialist for the New Jersey Department of Labor and had taught at the Archway School in Atco. Mr. Cronin was awarded his bachelor’s degree from Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C., in 1972 and a master’s degree in deaf education from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), Westminster. He served on various advisory committees for deaf advocacy as part of his professional responsibilities to the deaf and hearing impaired in New Jersey. He also was involved in the mentoring of young deaf adults. He was an active participant and officer of New Jersey Deaf Awareness Week Inc., serving as its vice president and trustee; was president of the Monmouth-Ocean Deaf Community Association Inc.; and was a member of the Monmouth-Ocean Deaf Bowling Leagues. Mr. Cronin is survived by his wife of 28 years, Virginia (Jean) McNerney Cronin; his children, Drew, 18, and twin daughters, Meghan and Caitlin, 11; a brother, R. Neil Cronin of Pipersville, Pa.; two sisters, Patricia Van Gilder of Perrinton, Mich., and Marie Hull of Brick, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A Mass was offered at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Jersey Deaf Awareness Week Inc., 32 Fairway Ave., West Orange 07052. The O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick, was in charge of arrangements.
