Kenneth Edson Esq.
Spring Lake and Hutchinson Island, Fort Pierce, Fla. resident Kenneth Thomas Edson Esq., the beloved husband of the late Jean Flynn Edson of 52 years, died on Aug. 2 at St. Lucie Hospice House in Florida surrounded by his family.

He was 77 years old.

He was born on Sept.25, 1930 in Queens, N.Y. He was the son of the late Dr. George N. Edson and Alice Duffy Edson. His brother, Peter predeceased him. They raised their family in Crestwood and Stanford, N.Y. and had retired in Spring Lake and Hutchinson Island, Fort Pierce, Fla.

Mr. Edson attended Fordham Prep School, Fordham University and graduated Brooklyn Law School in 1952. Mr. Edson practiced insurance law in New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland. He was the founding partner of the law firm Cherry, Edson & Vann, LLC. He was an avid sportsman and a long time member of The Campfire Club of America, Chappaqua, N.Y. Mr. Edson was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Mr. Edson is survived by his four children, Loraine Edson, of Vero Beach, Fla., Michael Edson and his wife Linda, of Millbrook, N.Y., Barbara Jean Mark and her husband Michael, of New Fairfield, Conn. and Carey Whalen and her husband Thomas, of Millbrook, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren, Justin, Jaclyn, Kendall Pancotti, Chelsea and Logan Edson, Kellie and Lauren Mark and Cara and Amanda Whalen.

Visiting will be today from 2 to 5 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. A Mass will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, in Spring Lake, followed by burial at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

George Cummings Sr.
Avon by the Sea resident George Patrick Cummings Sr. son of Irish immigrants, grandson of a Civil War veteran, loving husband, brother, father and grandfather, died on May 21 after a long illness.

Born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, he attended both Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University, where he earned a degree in English Literature. He was an avid reader and often entertained those close to him with moving recollections of his favorite passages. During World War II, he served honorably as a Technical Sergeant with the Flying Tigers 22nd Bomber Squadron in China. His tour of duty included missions over the Himalayas in which many of his fellow airmen perished. Their courage and sacrifice are still remembered today. Following his service, Mr. Cummings settled down in West Orange with his wife, June. He enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry. Together, they bore seven children before moving to Avon by the Sea. They were married 54 years. After his retirement, he and his wife vacationed at homes in central and southern Florida. He took pleasure in gardening and was an enthusiastic sports fan spending many a weekend sitting in his favorite chair watching professional golf and college football. He dearly loved his family, a good meal and a glass of port. He has left many poignant memories and for that all who know him are thankful. They will all miss him so very much. May he rest in peace.

He is survived by his wife, June; two sons, George Jr., of Philadelphia, and Guy Kenneth, of Verona and his wife Lynn Bannon-Cummings and their children, Colin, Molly and Patrick; five daughters, Carole Cummings and her children, Sebastian and Valentina Reyes, Beth Forino, of Avon by the Sea and her husband Carl, Anne Brivio, of Brussels, Belgium and her husband Enrico and their children, Juliet and Michele, Colleen Marky, of Ocean Grove and her son, Edward IV, and Patricia, of New York City and her husband Michael Fuquay and their children, Emily and Wade; two sisters, Dorothy Mallon, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Mary Tully, of Avon by the Sea; and a brother, Alfred, of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla.

Donations may be made to the Avon by the Sea First Aid Squad, 301 Main St.

Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie May Shinn
Manasquan resident Elsie May Shinn died on Aug. 4.

She was born in April 27, 1920 at Anna May Hospital in Spring Lake and was raised in Spring Lake Heights.

She graduated from Manasquan High School class of 1939. She was captain of the Cheerleading Squad and an A.A.U. swimmer. Elsie and her husband Bud Shinn were owners of Bud’s Center Food Market on Third Avenue in Spring Lake for many years. After retiring from the food market, she was a crossing guard for Sea Girt Elementary School. She was also a member of the Manasquan Elks Lodge, Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Shinn was predeceased by her husband, Ralph A. “Bud, ” in 1998.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph C. and his wife Judy, of Howell, and Raymond and his wife Tina, of Manasquan; one daughter, Mary Jo Treacy and her husband Harry, of Manasquan; 10 grandchildren, Jack, Richard, Jeffrey, Brien, Tara, Ralph Jr., Frank, Kevin, Kathryn and Ryan; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Wall Church Cemetery, Spring Lake Heights.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Manasquan Hook & Ladder No. 1, 33 Abe Voorhees Drive, Manasquan 08736, would be appreciated. Tributes can be posted at www.mem.com.

Ruth Renwick
Wall Township resident Ruth Renwick died on Monday, Aug. 4 at Geraldine Thompson Nursing Home.

She was 78 years old.

Born in Bayonne, she lived in Jersey City and Belmar before moving to Wall in 1998. Before her retirement, she worked as a secretary for Dr. Keagle in Long Branch. She was a member of St. Rose Church and a member of the Rosary Society.

Mrs. Renwick was predeceased by her husband, Elliot, in 1994.

Surviving are two sons, Mark, of Virginia Beach, Va., and John, of Wall; a daughter, Laura Tiedge and her husband Edward, of Pelham Manor, N.Y.; a brother, James Cooney and his wife Martha, of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather at 9:30 a.m. today at Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St., Belmar, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Evelyn Steinheim
Spring Lake resident Evelyn Burnett Steinheim died on Friday, Aug. 1 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 86 years old.

Mrs. Steinheim was the owner of Allaire Travel for 30 years before retiring in 2001. She was also a member of New Jersey ASTA and had been a volunteer for the Spring Lake Chapter of Deborah. She was also a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake.

Born in Newark, she had lived there until moving to Spring Lake 53 years ago. Evelyn was a graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy for Girls, Newark.

She was predeceased by her parents, the former chief of the Newark Fire Department Charles and his wife, Frances Reed Burnett; and her two brothers, Charles and James Burnett.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 61 years, Richard E. Steinheim; her devoted daughter, Lisa Steinheim-Adams; and her favorite son-in-law, Cliff.

Committal was private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to a charity of your choice in memory of Evelyn.

Monica McPherson
Bradley Beach resident Monica Mary McPherson died on July 29 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Camden, with her mother and father at her side.

She was 46 years old.

Monica was a graduate of Asbury Park High School, and the University of Maryland where she earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration and a masters degree in national security studies. She was a graduate of Seton Hall Law School. She worked as an attorney for various law firms and most recently worked as an attorney for the State of New Jersey in Trenton. She was a former member of the Asbury Park Rotary Club.

She is survived by her parents, James P. and Marguerite Ann McPherson; her five brothers, Capt. James B., U.S.C.G., John, Patrick, Commodore Brendan, U.S.C.G., and Michael; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of the arrangements.

Franklin Cardinale
Manasquan resident Franklin Cardinale died on Wednesday, July 30 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 74 years old.

Mr. Cardinale was born in Newark and raised in Bloomfield before moving to the Shore area. Mr. Cardinale was a longtime resident of Spring Lake before moving to Manasquan. He graduated from Seton Hall with a bachelor of science.

Mr. Cardinale was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a Fuller Brush salesman before becoming an insurance agent for Allstate, retiring after 30 years. Mr. Cardinale was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a volunteer fireman in Spring Lake Heights. He also was an umpire for Spring Lake Heights Little League, and a referee for Spring Lake Heights soccer program. Upon his retirement, Mr. Cardinale ventured into owning several trotter race horses, which he enjoyed thoroughly.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dolores Cardinal, in 1966.

He is survived by three sons, Bill Cardinal, of Shark River Hills, John Cardinal and his wife, Viola, of Point Pleasant, and Chris Cardinal, of Hoboken; two daughters, Cheryl Bois and her husband, Scott, of N.Y., N.Y. and Gayle Cardinal, of North Brunswick; a brother, Bill Cardinale, of California; a granddaughter, Katherine; also his former wives, Ann Cardinal, of Brielle and Arlene Cardinal, of Toms River; and nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum, Wall. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid Jersey Chapter, 246 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst 07755. Condolences and memories can be e-mailed to www.orenderfamilyhome.com.

John “Jack” O’Leary
Wall Township and Jupiter, Fla. resident John “Jack” O’Leary died on Wednesday, July 30 at home in Wall Township.

He was 69 years old.

Born in Boston, Mass., he lived in Metuchen before moving to Wall 25 years ago.

Mr. O’Leary was the New York regional manager for New England Life for 30 years before retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; one son, Jeffery and his wife, Marlena, of Manalapan; one daughter, Jacqueline Llewellyn and her husband, Daniel, of Hull, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Tarah and James Llewellyn and Jake Ryan O’Leary.

Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, in Wall.

William Miller
Blairsville, Ga. resident William “Bill” Edward Miller, formerly of Lake Worth, Fla. and Manasquan, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 2 at his residence.

He was 85 years old.

Bill was born Nov. 21, 1922 in Union County to the late Arthur William Miller and the late Edna Linbarger Miller.

He was a life member of the Elks Club, held a 100 ton boat Captain’s license for many years, operated various types of vessels and he owned and operated a successful electrical contracting business. Before moving to Blairsville, Ga. in 2005, he and his wife Joan lived in Lake Worth Florida for over 20 years. Previously to that he was a long time resident of Manasquan. While in Manasquan, he was very active in the community, serving as a volunteer with the Manasquan Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 and the Manasquan First Aid Squad. He held numerous certifications such as E.M.T., C.P.R. Vehicle Extrication, just to name a few. Additionally, he served on the board of education for many years and was elected president. He was instrumental in the construction of the new elementary school at that time. Bill loved life and the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the Three Foot Gun Club in N.J.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Joan Miller, of Blairsville, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Art and Debbie Miller, of Blairsville, Ga.; sister, Shirley Carroll, of Northfield, Vt.; granddaughters, Kim McFarland and Susan Johnson; grandsons, James Miller and Matthew Miller; and great grand-children, Nevin Miller, Kyler Miller, Casandra Johnson, Joey Johnson, Alyssa McFarland and Madison McFarland.

In order to help with the many youth programs they support, the family suggests that donations may be made to the Manasquan Elks No. 2534, P.O. Box 256, Manasquan 08736.
