Robert Metcalf
Lake Forest, Ill. resident Robert Metcalf, whose son, Tom, lives in Sea Girt, died on Oct. 9.

He was the longtime suburban School Superintendent. Everyone in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff communities knew Bob Metcalf. With his genuine concern and enthusiasm for the education of young people, he helped shape thousands of lives during his 42 years in education, 29 of them as Superintendent of Lake Forest High School before his retirement in 1992.

In town at the bank or local merchants, he was always greeted with “Hi, Bob.” Everyone knew him and he knew them. His wife remarked, “Wherever we traveled, either here or abroad, there would always be someone who knew him as a teacher, principal or superintendent and never failed to stop and tell him how much he influenced them.”

Robert was born in Madison, Wis., where his father was a teacher. He grew up in Oak Park, Ill. and received his bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and psychology from Brown University in Providence, R.I. His masters in education and counseling and Doctor of Philosophy was received from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill.

He began his teaching career in Dundee, Ill. as a math teacher. In 1952, he joined the faculty at the newly opened Rich Township High School where he served as a guidance counselor and administrator before becoming Superintendent at Lake Forest High School in 1963.

During his tenure at Rich Township High School, his father, Dr. Harold Metcalf, was Superintendent of the rival high school Bloom Township. Former colleagues have told the story “that during rival football and basketball games, Bob’s children divided their loyalties by sitting in the stand alternately with their Dad and Grandfather.”

At Lake Forest High School Robert created a unique advisory group that exemplified the way he believed people who respect each other can work together called the All School Council. The group was comprised of board of education members, administrators, teachers, union representatives, parent/teacher members and student council officers. The group met regularly and discussed agenda items in rounds so as to include everyone. When it came to a vote, the voting power was equal for each member.

All the students knew Bob and he knew them all by name. Bob was highly visible at athletic events, concerts and dances putting in many 16 hour days. He loved what he did and who he did it for. It could be called hands-on leadership where he would be seen out and about in the school hallways, gyms or cafeteria almost everyday putting his trust in the hands of his teachers. Bob let the teachers teach, and the students learn in a very collegial atmosphere.

He retired in 1992 to play golf in Lake Bluff and San Diego.

Mr. Metcalf was the husband of Mary; father of Tom Metcalf, and his wife, Catherine, of Sea Girt; Patty Hartnett, of Jackson, Wyo., and the late Bobby; stepfather of Colleen Cashen, of St. Paul, Minn. and Tracy Gardiner and her husband, Tom, of Lachmont, N.Y.; and grandfather of eight.

Burial was held in St. Mary Cemetery, in Lake Forest.

Wenban Funeral Home, in Lake Forest, Ill., was in charge of the arrangements.
