John Shikoluk
Brick Township resident John Shikoluk, whose daugher lives in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Feb. 13 comfortably in his home surrounded by his family.

He was 88 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Manasquan before moving to Brick 54 years ago.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of the 29th Infantry Division and was in the battle of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, landing on Omaha Beach.

Mr. Shikoluk was a beautician and operated a beauty salon in Asbury Park until 1967. He then operated the Duchess and Princess Beauty Salon in Brielle for 37 years. Upon his retirement, we worked for the housekeeping departments at Point Pleasant and Brick hospitals. Most recently, he was a greeter at T.G.I. Friday’s in Brick.

Mr. Shikoluk was a member of Manasquan Presbyterian Church, the Brick Junior Sports League and the V.F.W.

He met his wife, Betty Munday Shikoluk, in England and they were married there in 1944.

He is also survived by his children and their spouses, John Sheldon and Janet Shikoluk, Toms River, Marcene Rose Reiser, Point Pleasant, Jeffrey Reginald and Sue Shikoluk, Woodstock, Conn., and Lisa Lee & William Pett, Brick; his grandchidren, Vanessa Lee Reiser Williams, Ian Lawrence Reiser, Kevin John Shikoluk, Michael Jeffrey Shikoluk, Carlee Marcene Pett and Jonathan Robert Pett; and his stepgrandchildren, Matthew and Alex Bly.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Manasquan First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.

Visiting will be on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Building Fund of Manasquan First Presbyterian Church, 16 Virginia Ave., Manasquan 08736.

Anna O. Hankins
Lavallette resident Anna O. Hankins died Friday, Dec. 22 in Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant.

She was 80 years old.

Born in New Brunswick, Mrs. Hankins lived in North Brunswick before moving to Mantoloking in 1950, and then to Lavallette in 1955.

She was a 1940 graduate of Parsons Grammar School, North Brunswick, and a 1944 graduate of New Brunswick High School.

She was employed with the borough of Lavallette for 30 years, 13 years as borough clerk, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Lavallette, and a member of the church’s Women’s Club.

She was a member for over 50 years of the Order of Eastern Star, Gloria Chapter, Toms River, and a member of the Lavallette Seniors, the Lavallette Geb Guild, St. Bonaventure Craft Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lavallette Fire Co. No. 1.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Hankins, in 2003; her parents, Charles H. Ohlau Jr. and Anna Jansen; her brother-in-law, James H. Hankins, in 1973; her sister, Catherine Ohlau, in 2000; and her brother, George Ohlau.

Surviving are nephews, James Hankins Jr. and his wife Dina and grandniece, Catherine of Island Heights, and Robert Ohlau, of Florida; sisters-in-law, Andrea Hankins, Lavallette, and Thelma Blackman, of Delaware; and several cousins.

Viola May Strachan
Scottsdale, Ariz., resident Viola “Vi” May Schaefer Strachan, formerly of Point Pleasant Beach, died Tuesday, Nov. 28.

She was 87 years old.

Mrs. Strachan moved to Point Pleasant Beach in 1945 where she resided until moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1975.

She was a loving caregiver to many children in the Shore area over the years before moving to Arizona and continuing in her love and care for children until just a few years ago.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 37 years, Alexander David Strachan.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Lynne Strachan, Scottsdale, Ariz.; her grandsons, Michael Foote, Chandler, Ariz., and Matthew Foote and his wife Marci, Mineral, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Molly Grace Foote, Mineral, Va.

Katherine T. Patterson
Howell resident Katherine “Kathy” T. Patterson, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Saturday, Dec. 23, in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 67 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Patterson lived in Point Pleasant and Brick before settling in Howell in 1970.

She was a graduate of Kean University.

She was employed as an elementary school teacher, teaching in the Brick Township and Howell Township School systems. Along with other family members, she owned and operated Patterson Greenhouses, Howell.

Surviving are her husband, Donald W. Patterson; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Alan Patterson, Howell, Rich and Mary Patterson, Port Monmouth, and David and Meredith Patterson, Howell; two daughters and one son-in-law, Cindy and Bill Sculthorpe, Freehold Township, and Sharon Patterson, Howell; one brother, James Cook, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one sister, Joanne Crowley, Jekyll Island, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Tommy Sculthorpe, Brenna Sculthorpe, and Wesley Patterson.

Joseph F. Hagen Jr.
Phoenix, Ariz., resident Joseph F. Hagen Jr., whose brother lives in Point Pleasant Beach, died Friday, Dec. 8.

He was 83 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. Hagen lived there and in North Bloomfield, Ohio, before moving to Phoenix, Ariz.

He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and had served in the invasions of Guam, Cyan, and Iowa Jima where he was disabled. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was employed as a mason and bricklayer with the Newark Board of Education for 35 years, before retiring.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Hagen; his parents, Mary Ellen O'Donnell and Joseph Hagen Sr.; and two sisters, Florence and Mildred.

Survived are his wife of 11 years, Marcelene Hagen; two sons, Joseph F. Hagen III, Middletown, and Kevin R. Hagen, Boonton; five daughters, Susan Hagen Morrison, M.D., and Leanora Kirby, both of Mountain Lakes, Kathleen Hagen, Caldwell, Diane Hagen, Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Ann Buckheit, of Hawaii; two brothers, Charles Dennis Hagen, Point Pleasant Beach, and John Patrick Hagen, Forked River; one sister, Marie Smith, Sarasota, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

Mr. Hagen was buried in the National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix, Ariz.

Joseph Kenny
Point Pleasant resident Joseph Kenny died on Tuesday, Dec. 19, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

He was 81 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Kenny lived in North Jersey prior to moving to Point Pleasant more than 20 years ago.

He was employed as an electrician with the IBEW Union in Brooklyn, N.Y., for many years.

He was a member of St. Peter's Church, Point Pleasant Beach.

He was a member of the VFW of Point Pleasant Beach.

He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II as a private.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Irmgard Kenny, and his second wife, Mary Kenny.

Joseph has no living relatives; however, he leaves many good friends and his cat, Frosty.

Funeral arrangements were from the Colonial Funeral Home, Brick Township. Burial was in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown.

Bernice Claire Pocino
Spring Lake resident Bernice Claire Pocino, whose children live in Point Pleasant Beach, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, in her residence, The Wexford Assisted Living of Spring Lake, which she loved and where she was one of the original residents.

She was 91 years old.

Born and raised in Trenton, Bernice later lived in Hamilton Square, before making her residence at the Jersey Shore in 1974.

She was a former active member of the Methodist Church of Hamilton Square.

Bernice was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star Trenton Lodge, and active in many organizations over the years.

She was proud of her Scottish heritage with a strong will and love of family. She enjoyed the many simple pleasures that life offered: winters in Florida, summers at the Jersey Shore, boating, crabbing and making family memories. Her most enduring love was for her family.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Michael A. Pocino, and her 11 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her four beloved children, two daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey M. and John Tesauro, Point Pleasant Beach, and Lorraine A. and Francis Chickene, Spring Lake, and two sons and one-daughter-in-law, Raymond M. and Kamille Pocino, Moorestown, and Richard A. Pocino, Point Pleasant Beach; her grandchildren, Lorraine Tesauro and her husband Anthony DiCostanzo, John F. Tesauro Jr. and his wife Carolyn, Amy E. Pocino and her husband Tony Kelly, and Caren Pocino; and her great-grandsons, John F. Tesauro III and Michael C. Tesauro.

Funeral arrangements were from the Van Hise and Calligan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach, and were under the direction of Marc A. DiCostanzo of Lakewood Funeral Home, Howell. Interment was in Colonial Gardens Cemetery, Trenton.
