Susan B. Schroeder
Brick Township resident Susan B. Johnson Schroeder, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Thursday, Nov. 16 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 68 years old.

Born in Passaic, Ms. Schroeder lived in Paterson and Point Pleasant before moving to Brick 23 years ago.

She was employed as a retail store manager for 30 years, for many years with Steinbach's in Brick, retiring in 2000.

She attended St. Denis Church, Manasquan.

She served on the Early Downtown Redevelopment Committee for the town of Red Bank as an adviser.

Surviving are two sons, Michael, Brick, and Jeffrey DeMontmorency, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four daughters, Teresa Denton, Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Jacqueline Foley, Christine Lieb and Melissa Michaelson, all of Brick; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her beloved pets, Augie and Katie.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Brick.

Lorraine M. Sutphen
Lavallette resident Lorraine M. Collins Sutphen died Wednesday, Nov. 15 in Fountain View Care Center, Lakewood.

She was 79 years old.

Born in Kearny, Mrs. Sutphen lived in Union before moving to Lavallette. She also had summered in Lavallette before moving there for many years.

She was a graduate of the Washington School for Secretaries, Newark.

She was a secretary for many years with Nopco Chemical Company, Harrison. Then was a secretary for a law firm in Lavallette.

She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Church, Normandy Beach.

She was a member of the Deborah Tradewinds Chapter, Ocean Beach Seniors, and Dover-Brick First Aid Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her husband, William. Surviving are her brother-in-law, Everett Pfeiffer of Brick Township; three nephews, Danny Pfeiffer of Howell, James Pfeiffer of Tinton Falls, and Dennis Sutphen of Wakefield, R.I.; a niece, Nancy Bittmann of Brick; and many dear friends.

Funeral arrangements were from the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, Lavallette. Burial was in the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. Condolences may be sent to www.ryanfuneralhome.com.

Ulia C. Ascough
Farmingdale resident Ulia C. Ascough, whose grandson lives in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 89 years old.

Born in Farmingdale, Mrs. Ascough was a lifelong resident.

She was employed as a bookkeeper with Acme Markets, Point Pleasant, for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Farmingdale.

She was a member of the Farmingdale Historical Society.

She was predeceased by her husband, George H., in 2003; two brothers, Joseph and Albert Amalfa; and her sister, Rose Lefkowich.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Janet and Robert Grant, Neptune, and Margaret Mehok, Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Regina Amalfa, Freehold, and Nicholas and Kay Amalfa, Lakewood; four grandchildren, Dyan Simms and her husband Fred, Brick, Robert G. Grant, Point Pleasant, Patti Ramsour and her husband Don, Raymore, Mo., and Kelly Bigler, Independence, Mo.; and three great-grandchildren, Cara, Courtney, and Robert Bigler.

Funeral arrangements were from the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township. Interment was in Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. Condolence messages to the family may be sent to www.claytonfuneralhome.com.

Winifred H. Kelly
Hillside resident Winifred Harris Kelly, formerly of Point Pleasant Beach, died Tuesday, Nov. 14 in Union Hospital, Union.

She was 97 years old.

Born in Ireland, Mrs. Kelly lived in Newark and Point Pleasant before moving to Hillside four years ago.

Winifred was a member of St. Martha's Church, Point Pleasant and its Altar Rosary Society.

She was a beloved wife, devoted mother, and dear sister.

She was predeceased by her husband, Martin Kelly, her daughter, Catherine "Kathleen" Garrity, her brother, Albert Harris, and a grandson, Daniel Steil.

Surviving are a son, Thomas Kelly, retired from the Newark Fire Department and his wife Barbara; a daughter, Winifred Steil; two sisters, Annie Carabine and Elsie Goldrick; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Growney Funeral Home, Hillside. Interment was in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

Dorothy G. Werner
Point Pleasant Beach resident Dorothy G. “Buttercup” Werner died Monday, Nov. 20 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 73 years old.

Born in Bloomfield, Mrs. Werner lived there before moving to Point Pleasant Beach 40 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant Beach.

She was a member of VFW Post No. 4715, Point Pleasant Beach.

She was predeceased in 1995 by her husband, Frank Werner.

Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen and Martin Ryan, Point Pleasant Beach, and Elizabeth Werner, Point Pleasant Beach; one brother, John Lewis, of Florida; and one sister, Mary Backer, Absecon.

Funeral arrangements are from the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant Beach. Cremation will be private.

Dorothy D. Yaeger
Point Pleasant Beach resident Dorothy Douglas Yaeger died Monday, Nov. 20 in her home.

She was 87 years old.

Born in Kearny, Mrs. Yaeger lived in Harrison for 43 years before moving to Point Pleasant Beach in 1984.

She was the co-proprietor of the Harrison Recreation Center, Harrison, since 1941, retiring in 1984.

She volunteered for many years at Point Pleasant Hospital and the Point Pleasant Thrift Shop, and also for the Cancer Society.

She was predeceased in 1986 by her husband, Fidel Yaeger, in 1996 by her brother, Jack Douglas, and in 1988 by her sister, Marion Thorpe.

Surviving are three sons, Fidel “Mickey” Yaeger, Dumfries, Va., James Yaeger, of New Jersey, and Frederick Yaeger, Point Pleasant Beach; one brother, James Douglas, Toms River; one sister, Joan Hanst, Green Village; six grandchildren, Kenneth, David, Christopher, Brooke, Jesslyn, and Jimmy James; and seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jacob, Madeline, Michael, Kayla, Ryan and Kai.

Funeral arrangements are from the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Yaeger’s memory may be made to help cure emphysema to the American Lung Association, 1600 Route 22 East, Union, 07083.

Edwin H. Brookes Jr.
Point Pleasant Beach resident Edwin H. Brookes, joined family, friends, and our Lord in Heaven on Thursday, June 22.

He was 63 years old.

Mr. Brookes, also known as “Bill,” was born in Newark and grew up in Bernardsville.

After graduating from Bernardsville High School, he enlisted in the Navy to serve the country that he loved in the Vietnam War. Mr. Brookes served his country for four years. After an honorable discharge. he continued to serve the public for over 30 years as a police dispatcher, police officer, firefighter and first aider.

Mr. Brookes also experienced years of great joy in volunteering for the Special Olympics. He was an active ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church.

He is survived by Sally Brookes, his friend and former wife of 34 years; his daughter, Peggy Brookes and partner Heather Pino; his daughter, Betsy Brookes and his daughter, Bonnie Brookes. Mr. Brookes will be especially missed by his grand-dog, Macy “MayMay” and his MC; his brothers, Peter, Bobby and his wife, Connie, and Larry; as well as many nieces and nephews, especially Casey, also survived him. He desired to express great thanks to the many health care providers, clergy and friends that touched his life on a continual basis.

Arrangements were by the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Goryeb Children’s Hospital, c/o Mountainside Memorial Health Foundation, P.O. Box 35558, Newark, 07193-5558, would be appreciated.

Nancy L. Griggs
Lakewood resident Nancy L. Griggs, whose daughter lives in Point Pleasant, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 24.

She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Griggs was born in Lakewood. She was a graduate of Rider Business College in Lawrenceville. She was employed as a secretary for 25 years with the Howell Township Board of Education in Howell; retiring in 1983.

She was a former parishioner of St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church in Sea Girt. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid bridge player who enjoyed travel, sailing, knitting, cooking and the beach.

Mrs. Griggs was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Theron C. Griggs, in 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Michele G. Barth and her husband Robert C. of Point Pleasant; a brother, Ret. 1st Sgt., USMC William S. Groff Jr. and his wife Roxanne of Manchester; two grandchildren, Melissa A. Fitzpatrick and Christopher R. Barth; two great-grandchildren, Haleigh and Jack and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Arrangements were by O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick Township. A special thanks to Sidi Saliu and Debbie Kenyon for their wonderful care and devotion throughout her final days.
