Sarah C. Halliwell
Point Pleasant resident Sarah “Sadie” C. Halliwell died Monday, Oct 4 in Specialty Hospital in Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

She was 83 years old.

Born in Coatbridge, Scotland, Mrs. Halliwell lived in Jersey City and Kearny before moving to Point Pleasant 10 years ago.

She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper with Clark Thread, Harrison, before retiring many years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, William A. Halliwell.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, William G. and Marilynn; one daughter, Wendy S. Halliwell; and four grandchildren, Geoffrey, Kerri, Kailey, and Kelsi.

Funeral arrangements are from the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the funeral home.

Robert V. Mokracek
Point Pleasant resident Robert Vincent Mokracek died Monday, Oct. 4 in his home.

He was 78 years old.

Born in Temple, Pa., Mr. Mokracek moved to Point Pleasant when he was about 10 years old.

He was a self-employed carpenter/general contractor.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 143th Infantry in the 36th Division as staff sergeant, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was predeceased by his brother, Donald, and two sisters, Dorothy Cottrell and Margie Rein.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Cathy, Brick Township, and Vincent and Nancy, Howell; one daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Eric Wall, Brick; one brother and sister-in-law, Mickey and Patricia, Point Pleasant; one sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and George Walsh, Newcomb, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

Private funeral arrangements were from the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach.

Richard G. Ferris
Toms River resident Richard G. Ferris, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Oct. 5 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

He was 70 years old.

Born in Plainfield, Mr. Ferris lived in Manasquan, Wall Township, Brielle and Point Pleasant before moving to Toms River two years ago.

He was a graduate of Plainfield High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Bucknell University.

He was a fixed-wing flight instructor at Fort Rucker, Ala., had a commercial boat license, ferrying yachts from numerous ports in Texas and Florida to the Jersey Shore. Also, he was a chef with many area restaurants, a driver with Allaire Limousine and the owner of An Ice Creamery, Brielle.

He was an exempt member of Manasquan Fire Company No. 2., and a 25-year friend of Bill W.

He was an Army Signal Corps veteran, serving as a first lieutenant and earning his wings in San Marcos, Texas.

He was predeceased by his wife, Annette Morrone Ferris.

Surviving are two daughters, Pam M. Massarelli, Hutchinson Island, Fla., and Joanne M. LeBel, Guilderland, N.Y.; one stepson, Jeffrey Morrone, Livingston; one brother, Robert L., North Little Rock, Ark.; four granddaughters, Samantha, Sadie Jane, Madyson, and Kendra; and two nieces and one nephew, Kathleen F. Heim, Point Pleasant, and Jean Ferris and Paul Ferris, both of Cranford.

Funeral arrangements are from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Visiting will be at 10 a.m. today in the funeral home, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury, 07719.

William J. “Bill” Carew
Westborough, Mass. resident Commander William J. Carew III, whose sister-in-law lives in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Oct. 5 in Beaumont Skilled Nursing Facility in Westborough, Mass.

He was 93 years old.

For 46 years he was the husband of the late Margaret “Peggy” Queenan Carew, who died in 1994.

Mr. Carew was born in Newark, the son of the late William J. Carew Jr. and Katherine Connolly Carew. A 1928 graduate of Seton Hall Prep in South Orange, Bill earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering in 1932 from Newark College of Engineering.

While in college, Bill began working as a special messenger for the Newark Post Office, a position he continued to hold after graduation. In 1938, Bill began a real estate career specializing in the appraisal of residential properties.

Early in 1942 he joined the naval reserve and was commissioned lieutenant, junior grade, in September of that year. Assigned as an LST engineer officer, he was attached to the Pacific fleet amphibious forces until the end of World War II, participating in the initial assaults on Bougainville, Hollandia, Guam and the Philippine Islands. Bill was promoted to lieutenant commander in 1946, and in 1947 was released to reserve duty. He retired from the Naval Reserves at the rank of commander in 1970.

After the war, Bill resumed his career in real estate. For 25 years he worked for North Jersey Savings in Passaic, appraising the value of real estate investments and earning promotion to vice president, before retiring from the institution in 1981. He continued his independent real estate appraisal business until he was 83.

Bill was an avid municipal planner, serving 19 years on the planning board of Nutley, where he resided for almost 50 years. He also served as chairman of the Joint Council on Municipal Planning Boards of Essex County from 1970 to 1973, and as a trustee of the Passaic Valley Planning Association for many years.

After moving to Massachusetts in 1995, Commander Carew was active in VFW Post 638, Marlborough, and in the Worcester County Chapter Military Officers Association of America. He was also a member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Council No. 85 Knights of Columbus, Westborough.

He leaves his daughter, Maryrose C. Coiner, of Marlboro, Mass.; son-in-law Michael Coiner; grandsons John Coiner, of Maynard, Mass. and Tom Coiner, Marlboro, Mass.; and his sister Olive R. Stelling, Sarasota, Fla. He was the brother of the late Paul T. Carew, Hobe Sound, Fla. He also leaves his sisters-in-law, Rosalie Cawley, Point Pleasant, and Chris Carew, Hobe Sound, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Xavier Society for the Blind or the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts.

Estelle Cranmer
Brick Township resident Estelle Cranmer, whose sister lives in Lavallette, died Sunday, Sept. 19 in her home.

She was 81 years old.

Born in Linden, Mrs. Cranmer lived in Iselin and in Mt. Pocono, Pa., for 17 years before moving to Brick one year ago.

She was an office worker for a number of years with Seamans, Edison.

She was a communicant of the Church of the Visitation, Brick.

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor, in 2002; and by one brother, Joseph Jasion; and one sister, Louise Jasion.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Joyce Cranmer, Budd Lake; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Douglas Cottrell, Brick, Connie and Charles Maddux, Fair Oaks, Calif., and Carol and Richard Smith, Andover; one brother, Edward Jasion, Bridgewater; five sisters, Helen Jugan, Holmdel, Bertha “Berts” Romanow, Lavallette, Virginia “Vigi” Stanion, Durham, N.C., Genivive “Jene” Widmaier, Helletown, Pa., and Anne Mitchell, Ewing; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements were from the Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, Brick.

Contributions in Mrs. Cranmer’s memory may be made in her name to a favorite charity.

Helen A. Fuchs
Point Pleasant resident Helen A. Fuchs died Tuesday, Sept. 14 in Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant.

She was 86 years old.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Fuchs lived in the Bronx, N.Y., before moving to Point Pleasant in 1967.

She was employed as a secretary with the American Maritime Council, New York City, before retiring.

She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant Beach, and a member of the Rosary Altar Society.

She was a longtime volunteer with St. Gregory’s Pantry, Point Pleasant Beach, and a member of AARP Chapter No. 2920, Point Pleasant.

She was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth and Douglas.

Surviving are her husband, Edward; three sons, Richard,Quebec, Canada, Edward, Ocean Gate, and Christopher, Catonville, Md.; one brother John Abate, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.

Contributions in Mrs. Fuchs’ memory may be made to Visual Aids, 526 26th St., No. 510, New York, N.Y. 10010.

Joseph Philben
Jackson Township resident Joseph “Uncle Joe” Philben, whose daughter lives in Point Pleasant, died Thursday, Sept.16 in Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

He was 67 years old.

Born in Neptune, Mr. Philben lived in Freehold before moving to Jackson many years ago.

He was employed for 40 years as a well driller with Kaye Well Drilling, Inc., Jackson, retiring in 2000.

He was a longtime member of the Jackson Mills Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson.

Surviving are one daughter, Samantha Willmot, Point Pleasant; his close friend, Gary Poppy, Jackson; and two sisters.

Funeral arrangements were from the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, Jackson.
