FRANK R. ROMANOW, 98, a retired Bell Labs engineer, died Saturday, July 29, 2006, at his daughter’s home in Neptune, New Jersey. Frank was born on March 21, 1908 in Paris, France. He moved to the United States in 1926 with his parents, Frank and Johanna Romanow. Frank received his Mechanical Engineer degree, cum Laude, and his Master of Mechanical Engineering degrees from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He had completed his course work and was working on his thesis for his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University when his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Frank began his 42 year career at Bell Labs in 1930. He worked in Manhattan, Murray Hill and Holmdel and retired in 1972 as Vice President and head of the electroacoustics department. While working at Bell Labs, Frank was granted 10 patents covering microphones, hearing aids and telephone equipment, including the Speakerphone and the Touch-Tone dialing system. During World War II, he worked with the Navy Department developing antisubmarine warfare systems. He was a Fellow of the American Acoustical Society and published numerous engineering and technical papers. Frank was a Telephone Pioneer. After his retirement, Frank moved from Colts Neck, to Cape Cod, Mass., residing in Falmouth and later in Yarmouthport. He moved back to New Jersey two years ago. An avid bridge and tennis player, Frank was a founder and past President of the Summit (New Jersey) Tennis Club. He was predeceased in 2003 by Frances P. Romanow, his wife of 66 years, and by his son, F. Frederick Romanow, Jr., of Belfast, Maine. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia R. Hundley, and her husband, James, of Neptune; his daughter-in-law, Sharon Leigh Romanow, of Belfast Maine; four grandchildren, James, Todd and Katherine Hundley, of Neptune, and Michael Scott Romanow of Lafayette, Louisiana; and a niece, Karen Chorches, of Falmouth, Massachusetts. A memorial service was scheduled for Friday morning, August 4, 2006, at 11:00 at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, New Jersey. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Gadd-Romanow Foundation, 150 Cedar Street, Belfast, Maine 04915, a foundation organized by Frank’s late son Fred to provide financial assistance to children with diabetes, or to the Central Jersey Visiting Nurse Association.

ALICE D. MICHAK, 90, of Ocean Grove passed away peacefully on Monday, July 31, 2006 at the Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove. Born in Long Branch, she was a lifelong resident of Ocean Grove. Alice was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and kind friend to many. She will be dearly missed. For many years, she worked at the Earle NWS Depot and at Ft. Monmouth before retiring to be a homemaker. As a young girl, she worked in Steinbach’s Department Store in Asbury Park. She was a graduate of Neptune High School and the Asbury Park Business School. Mrs. Michak was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove and a member of the church's Anne Forrester Circle and the Frances Stern Circle. Together with her late sister, Katherine Sullivan, she volunteered in the Sunday school at St. Pauls and she was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. For many years she was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Alice loved birds, nature, art, music and berry picking. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, in 1997, by her parents, Charles and Kezia Wilkins Bilms and by her sisters, Katherine Sullivan, Ruth Douglas and Leila Marjorie Bilms. Surviving are her daughter, Diane V. Brockel and her husband Donald, of West Allenhurst, and her grandchildren, Candice, Kellie and Erik. Friends were invited to call from 2-4 and 7-9 Thursday at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. Interment was at 9:30 Friday morning at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. A memorial service at 11:00 at the Bishop Janes Tabernacle in the Auditorium Square in Ocean Grove followed the interment. To honor her love of church and children, the family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Sunday School at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756.

Rev. ANDREW CULVER GORDON, 95, of Raphine, VA, formerly of Ocean Grove, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at the Blue Ridge Christian Home, Raphine, VA. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 6, 1911 to Robert and Margaret Gordon. He was named after the pastor of his family’s church, Rev. Andrew Culver. He married Eleanor Evans on December 29, 1937 and they celebrated 67 anniversaries until her death in 2005. He graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia in 1929, Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL in 1933, Westminster Seminary, Philadelphia in 1936 and in 1949 he received a Masters Degree in Church history from Temple University, Philadelphia. Ordained to the pastoral ministry in 1936, he served three church parishes of Orthodox Presbyterian churchs in South Dakota from 1936-1941. He joined the US Army as a chaplain in 1941 and served 36 months in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He spent another 16 years in the US Army reserve, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was the pastor of the Third Reformed Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia from 1946 to 1951. He was moderator of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in North America, General Synod in 1949. He served as pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church (UPCUSA) in Paterson and Wayne from 1952 to 1978. Rev. Gordon served as a stated supply pastor of the Whiting Reformed fellowship from 1979 to 1992. He did some preaching and a lot of teaching Sunday School at Redeemer Orthodox Presbyterian Church until 2000. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Alexander, by his sister, Margaret, by his son Andrew Chase Gordon in 2003 and by his wife Eleanor Evans Gordon in 2005. Surviving are his son, Rev. Robert Gordon of Lexington, VA, a daughter, Margaret Mongin of Roxbury, CT, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Monday morning, August 7th at 11:00 at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, with interment following at 2:00 PM at the Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. Friends were invited to call from 10:00 to 11:00 at the funeral home.

WILLIAM EDWARD GREVE, 78, formerly of Ocean Grove, died July 31, 2006, at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation of Red Bank, NJ after a long illness. Born in Great Barrington, MA, and raised in the Bronx, NY and Great Barrington, Bill was a long time dairyman with a deep affinity for the farming life. A member of the Austerlitz Grange and the Extension Service of Columbia County he loved to talk 'cow.' An active member of the Congregational Church of North New York, the second oldest integrated church in the United States. Mr. Greve served on its Board of Trustees, Board of Deacons, Pulpit Committee, and Housing Committee. He was also a Sunday School sexton, teen chaperone and delegate to the United Church of Christ. Upon retiring Bill moved to Ocean Grove where his willingness to lend a hand earned him Ocean Grove's Man of the Year Award in 1988. An avid gardener, many of the local yards still bear his imprint. Bill also loved stamp collecting and all manner of puzzles. He is survived by his sisters Edith Lory of VT, and Lois Greve of NJ and his niece Janet Wallace of VT. Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a contribution to the Congregational Church of North New York, 411 East 143rd Street, Bronx, NY 10454 would be appreciated.

DAVID T. GAMBLE, 76 of AVON, died Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at home.
He was born in Spring Lake on March 18, 1930, to David and Helena Thompson Gamble and lived his entire life in Avon. He was a graduate of the Avon Elementary School and Asbury Park High School. Mr. Gamble served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged after 4 years of service. He was a life member of the Avon Fire Department, joining in 1950 and serving as chief in 1961 and 1962 and was a life member of the Avon First Aid Squad. He was a pitcher on the fire department's softball team for many years, a member of the Avon Board of Education for 9 years and a special Avon police officer for many years. He was employed by Jersey Central Power and Light Company, Allenhurst for 42 years. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Claire, to his winter get away condo in St. Augustine, Florida where he served on the board of directors and spending time with his five grandchildren. Dave was a Mets and Jets fan, following his Mets on a daily basis until the time of his death. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Claire Tassey Gamble, a son, David, a daughter, Dori, his daughter in law, Amy, his son in law, Jon, and his grandchildren, David, Dan, Zach, Matt and Luke. The family would like to thank Dr. Susan Greenberg, “Dr. Susie”, and her wonderful staff for their love and kindness to Dave and his family. Friends were invited to call on Friday from 4-8 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A Firemen’s Service was held at 7:00 PM. A funeral service was held on Saturday, August 12th at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, with interment following at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dave’s memory to the Avon Fire Department, 301 Main Street, Avon, NJ 07717, to the Avon United Methodist Church 507 Garfield Avenue, Avon or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central New Jersey, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

DONALD R. MELTON, 69, of MANALAPAN, died Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at the Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. He had worked as a mailman for the US Postal Service, serving the Old Bridge Post Office for more than thirty one years until retiring in 1997. He was a railroad buff and loved trains. He was born in Jersey City. Surviving are his loving companion of 27 years, Lucille Marciano Tallman of Neptune City, a son, Donald R. Melton, Jr., of Whiting, three daughters, Patricia Melton of Toms River, Catherine Phillips of South Carolina and Sandy Farakish of North Carolina, a brother Burley Melton of Arden, Delaware, seven grandchildren, Heather and Ashley Melton, Samantha Phillips, Alexandra and Nathan Farakish, and Matthew and Alyssa Melton and four step grandchildren Krista and Ronnie and Madeline and Alexander Tallman. A funeral service was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Monday morning, August 14th at 11:00 with burial following at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Neptune. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-6.

THOMAS O'BOYLE, 91, of Asbury Park, died Monday, August 14, 2006, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in County, Claire, Ireland, he was self employed for many years, until retiring. Surviving are a sister, Mary Toohey of Cliffside Park, NJ and a niece, Eileen Toohey-Brust of Teaneck. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday morning, August 26th at 10:00 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. There were no calling hours.
