ANN W. PITCHER, 78, of OCEAN GROVE died Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Mrs. Pitcher worked in the circulation department of the Asbury Park Press before retiring in 1984. She was born in Linden and had lived there until moving to Ocean Grove in 1952. Surviving is her son, David L. Pitcher of Ocean Grove and a granddaughter, Leann S. Mardo of Union City, N.J. Services were private. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home, Ocean Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

SAMUEL KURTZ, 90 of TINTON FALLS, died Saturday November 1, 2008 at Liberty Royal Care Center, Tinton Falls. No services are schedueled. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home, Ocean Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPHINE MENNELLA, 94, of NEPTUNE, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at Brandywine at the Gables, Brick Township. Born on December 5, 1913 in Asbury Park, Josephine lived in Asbury Park and Ocean Township before moving to Neptune 46 years ago. She had worked as a seamstress for Ben Max and Steiners, both of Neptune before retiring in 1963. Josephine was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. She was a member and past president of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Lady's Society and a member of the Neptune Seniors. Josie was happiest in her kitchen feeding her friends and family. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Dr. Arnold Scalpati in 2007, by her first husband, Louis Scalpati, and by her second husband, Michael Mennella. Surviving is her daughter in law, Nancy Scalpati of Lakewood, her grandchildren, Louis Scalpati and his wife, Jody, of Austin, TX, Lori Ann Lukeman and her husband, Christopher, of Howell and Carroll-Jo Tavella and her husband, Vincent, of Staten Island, her brother, Salvatore "Sonny" Scalpati and his wife, Susan, of Long Branch and her greatest joy, her great grandchildren, Kelly Scalpati, Danielle, Jessica and Christopher Lukeman and Keith and Vincent Tavella. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Avenue at Pine Street, Asbury Park on Saturday, November 8th at 10:00 AM, with burial following at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Neptune, NJ. Friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Fr. Gerard Lynch Scholarship Fund, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, Attn: Sister Jude Boyce, First Avenue at Pine Street, Asbury Park, NJ 07712 would be appreciated.

EDITH GRIMMER BRUNNER, 87, of MIDDLETOWN, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at the Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Brunner was an avid golfer and gardner and enjoyed traveling. She and her late husband Art, enjoyed spending their winters in Port Charlotte, FL, and she was a lifelong summer resident of Ocean Grove. Born in Plainfield, she lived in Murray Hill before moving to Middletown two years ago. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Brunner in 1986. Surviving are her sister, Marguerite Edwards of Ocean Grove, her nephews, Richard Edwards and his wife, Susanne, of Keller, TX and Charles E. Edwards and his wife, Rosemarie, of Belford and her niece, Linda Koch and her husband, David, of Wilton, CT. Relatives and friends were invited to attend a memorial gathering from 12:00 noon until 1:00 PM on Monday, December 1st at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall Street, Eatontown, NJ 07724 or online at www.monmouthcountyspca.org would be appreciated.

JOSEPH W. TAYLOR, 76, of KEANSBURG, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Mr. Taylor was a member of Tecumseh Tribe #60, Order of the Red Men/Sons of Liberty and an avid local bowler. Born in Neptune, he was a longtime resident of the Jersey Shore. He was predeceased by his wife Linda May Taylor, by his son, Michael Taylor, by his mother and step father, Blanch and Fred Bennett and by his sister, Connie Bennett. Surviving are a son, Mark A. Taylor and a daughter, Meridith L. Taylor both of Keansburg, a brother, Fred Bennett, Sr., and his wife Pat of Neptune, two sisters, Judy and her husband, Bob, Matthews of Manasquan and Beverly Kiser of Jackson, his brothers-in-law, John E. May of Florida and Rev. Dr. Wayne E. May of Bradley Beach and four grandchildren. Friends may call on Thursday from 7-9 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.

BYRON R. "Barn" COUNCIL, 56, of NEPTUNE, died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at home. He was employed by the Asbury Park Press, having worked in the distribution department for the last 13 years. Mr. Council was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam Era. He was a diehard NY Giants fan. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Alberta Braxton Council and by his sister, Sharon Council. Surviving are his wife, Donna Council, his son Jelani A. Council of Neptune, three daughters, Stephani Agolio of Georgia, Danielle Agolio and Lateefah Council, both of Neptune, two brothers, William Council, Jr. of Edgewater Park and Stanley Niblack of Newark, three sisters, Cerena Quasim of Brooklyn, Debra Washington of La Cruz, NM and Ursula Jenkins of Asbury Park, nine grandchildren, Shaquashia Agolio, Destiny Fields, D’Onna Stout, Devin Stout, Karon Council, Corey Stout, Trinity Fields, Kennedy Fields, and Saadyia Jones and one great grandchild Jaaziya Jones. Viewing hours will be Saturday from 1-4 PM with a funeral service following at 4 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.

RUTH M. ANTES of OCEAN GROVE, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She had worked as an office manager inthe billing department at the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune for more than seventeen years until retiring. She managed the Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare and Medicaid Policies. During the depression she worked for TEL T with her sister, Betty Eible, for 20 years until marriage. Before World War II, women were expected to leave their job at the time of marriage in order to raise a family. Later she ran the Philadelphia House Bed and Breakfast on Embury Avenue in Ocean Grove. She met many residents who enjoyed her hospitality and remained friends throughout life. Born in East Orange, NJ she lived in Verona for over 20 years, then in Lakewood for seven years before moving to Ocean Grove in 1964. She enjoyed the privacy of her own home with her family and friends and she wintered in Florida. Ruth was a graduate of Verona High School, class of 1938. Mrs. Antes was a member of Unity Church by the Shore, Neptune. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Antes in 1978. He was a career military man who served in combat in Germany and also participated in the D Day invasion in Normandy, France She was also predeceased by her son, Kenneth Antes in 1999. Surviving are her daughter, Susan Antes of Richmond, Kentucky, a niece, Barbara Daly of Tinton Falls, a nephew, Lawrence Carroll of Toms River, and her granddaughter, Anne Marie Antes, who attends Model Lab at Eastern Kentucky University, one of only 99 Model Labs left in the country and has two trainers in the sport of golf. A memorial service will be held at The Unity Church By The Shore, 3508 Asbury Avenue, Neptune, NJ on Sunday, January 11 at 1:00 PM. Those who wish may send flowers or a contribution to the Unity Church by the Shore would be appreciated.

VIRGINIA H. CZYZ, 94, of OCEAN GROVE, died Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove. Mrs. Czyz had worked as a registered nurse at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch for more than 30 years, retiring in 1982. After retirement she volunteered there. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Asbury Park and a member of the ladies auxiliary of the VFW Post 1333. Mrs. Czyz was a veteran of the US Army, serving as a nurse for five years, two of those years being in the Panama Canal Zone. Surviving are a cousin, Sharon Maffeo of Harrisburg, PA, and a niece and nephew Joseph and Linda Kulick of Bradley Beach. A funeral service was held on Wednesday January 7th at 11:00 AM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, with interment following at Forest Green Memorial Park, Marlboro. Friends were invited to call at the funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 308 First Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ 07712 would be appreciated.

DIANE GRIFFIN, 54, of OCEAN GROVE, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She had completed four nursing courses and was well known for volunteering at local hospitals. Surviving are her brother, Kevin W. Griffin and his wife, Wendi, of Howell, her companion, Phil Meklin, two nephews, Kevin and Michael Griffin, and a niece, Mellisa Griffin. Friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Saturday afternoon, January 11th after 1:00 PM. A funeral service was held at 3:30 PM at the funeral home.
