Cally Jakuc
Cally Jakuc, of Wall died on Saturday, Dec. 3 surrounded by family and friends at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. She was 48.

Cally was a teacher for the Wall Township Board of Education. She worked at the Allenwood School as a special education teacher providing both in-class support and one on one teaching. She was a member of the NJEA. Cally was a graduate of Wall High School where she was a member of the Track and Field Team and excelled in the javelin. She then went to Glassboro State University in Glassboro and earned her BS in Special Education. Mrs. Jakuc enjoyed being a Wall Township soccer mom and spending time with her family.

She was born and raised in Passaic and lived in Greece for a short time before moving to Wall Township in the early 70’s.

Predeceased by her father Michael Coussoulis in 1994, she is survived by her loving husband of 21 years Bob Jakuc, two sons Michael and Christopher both at home and mother Chrysoula Coussoulis of Kavala, Greece. She also leaves her sister Cynthia Tsapanidis and her husband Theodore also of Kavala, Greece, and her brother Art Coussoulis and his partner Joel Constantian of Sacramento, Calif.

Arrangements were under the direction of O’Brien Funeral Home in Brick. Parastis were celebrated during the visitation. Burial was at St. Georges Greek Orthodox cemetery in Neptune.

Maureen Terese Bennett
Maureen Terese [Martyn] Bennett, formerly of Brielle and Wall, died Sunday, Dec. 4 at her home. She was 72.

Born in Elizabeth, Maureen moved to Brielle when she was 11 years old and was a 1957 graduate of Manasquan High School. She lived in Wall for 23 years before moving to Brick in 1993. She was a collector with the law firm of Hayt, Hayt and Landau in Eatontown before her retirement.

Maureen was a very creative artist known for her crafts, painting and making elaborate Halloween costumes. She was a Girl Scout leader for 10 years and was the chairperson for the Monmouth County Chapter of the Fresh Air Fund in the 1970’s. She was also known in certain circles as “Gigglemom.”

Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Franklin C. and Mildred [Maher] Martyn, a brother James Valentine Martyn, Sr., and a sister Judith Ann Senecke.

Surviving are her beloved daughter Erin Patrice Bennett, of Brick; a brother Frank T. Martyn and his wife Toni, of Brick; and her former husband Robert W. Bennett, of Toms River. She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews; James V. Martyn, Jr., Michael J. Martyn, Kenneth B. Martyn, Daniel B. Martyn, Kerry A. Senecke, Francis X. Senecke Jr., and Matthew B. Martyn. Her companion and friend, her dog Misty “Gigglepup” Bennett is also feeling the loss of her Nana.

Memorial Gathering will be held Sunday, Dec. 11 from 2-5 p.m. at Maureen’s brother Frank Martyn’s Home, 101 Truman Dr. in Brick. Committal will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Erin P. Bennett c/o O’Brien Funeral Home in Brick to help defray funeral costs.

Robert R. Laliberte
Robert R. Laliberte, with family in Wall, passed away at his home on Monday Nov. 28. He was 85.

He was born and raised in Waterville, Maine and graduated from Colby College in 1951, where he excelled in hockey, making All New England for three years. Bob worked for Pratt and Whitney as an accountant, owned hotels in Florida and New Jersey and operated the Red Bank Bus Terminal for 15 years. Bob enjoyed refinishing old houses, highlighted by a 10-bedroom Victorian in Ocean Grove.

Bob is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Jean in 2006 and his three brothers Alton, Nel and Bernard.

He is survived by his son Todd Laliberte and daughter-in-law Beth, of Wall, and his son Robert Laliberte, Jr., of Lakewood. Robert is also survived by two grandchildren, Ryan and Jenny.

Arrangements are under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals in Manasquan. Burial will be private at Brig Gen William C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Wrightstown. George W. Applegate
George W. Applegate, 85 of Wall, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Laurelton Village Nursing Home in Brick. He was 85.

George was born in Arlington, Mass. to Harry and Frances Sophia Applegate. He was a graduate of Arlington High School, Mass. He received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physics from Monmouth College.

He entered the military service after high school in 1945. He served in the United States Navy and received the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal. He continued to serve his country through the United States Navy reserves as a Chief Warrant Officer, W-4.

He was recalled to active duty twice and served during the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He continued his service until 1982 when he was given an honorable discharge after 32 years of service. He was also a Life Member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 87. George was employed for over 30 years at Fort Monmouth as a Research Physicist until his retirement in 1984.

He was active with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, the highest recognition a local council can bestow upon a volunteer. He held many positions in the Boy Scouts Monmouth Council Thunderbird District, including Unit Commissioner, Round Table Commissioner and Member of District Committee. He was the Camp Master Coordinator at Quail Hill Scout Reservation. Locally he was the Cub Master of Pack 78, West Belmar; Scoutmaster of Troop 194, Wall Township; Webelos Leader, Pack 82 Allenwood and Troop 59 Committee Member in Manasquan. He was Order of Arrow, and volunteered at the Service Center in Oakhurst. He was a member of the Laurelton Park Baptist Church in Brick.

He is predeceased by his parents Harry and Frances Sophia Applegate; siblings Harry and James Applegate; Ella Guker and Lilly Maxson.

George will always be loved and remembered by his wife of 51 years, Eva [née Naden] Applegate of Wall. He was the adoring father of Howard and his wife Janet Applegate of Wall, Scott and his wife Lisa Applegate, of Hamilton, and Sharon Applegate Long, of Brick. He was PopPop George to seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Victoria, Matthew, Ryan, Eric, Aimee and Cadi.

He is also survived by his sisters Ada DeNucci, of West Long Branch, and Laura Reynolds of Woodruff, S.C.

Arrangements were under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals in Manasquan. Interment will be private at Brig. Gen. William C Doyle Veterans Memorial cemetery in Wrightstown.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of his great respect to the Boy Scouts of America, the family has asked for donations to the following scouting organizations: BSA Troop 82 of Allenwood, 1815 Carmerville Road, Wall, BSA Troop 333, 2806 Buchanan St., Wall, and BSA Troop 59, 68 Virginia Avenue, Manasquan.

John A. Kochan
John A. Kochan, with family in Wall, died Thursday, Nov. 24 at Sunnyside Manor in Wall surrounded by his loving family. He was 93.

Born and raised in Elizabeth, he moved to Lavallette in 1966.

Mr. Kochan served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WWII, attaining the rank of Sergeant. During his military service, he served in the Philippines and South Pacific.

John was employed by Proctor and Gamble in Staten Island, N.Y. for 40 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a parishioner of the Parish of St. Pio of Pietrelcina in Lavallette, where he served as an usher and eucharistic minister, and was a member of the parish’s Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 8415.

He was predeceased by his son John, his daughter Johanna, his brother Walter, and his sister Anna Bober.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years Eleanor [Samolyk]; his children Felicia Karstens and her husband Charles, of Bayville, Maryanna Boekholt and her husband James Jr., of Lavallette, Diana Kochan and Dana Kovich, of Lavallette, Eleanora Bean and her husband Richard, of Brick, and Joseph and his wife Mary, of Wall; his brother Rev. Frederick Kochan, of Lavallette, his sister Josephine Wasielewski, of Lavallette; nine grandchildren, James III, Jason, Debra, Lisa, Lauren, Richard, Allison, Adam and Julia; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Lavallette. A Mass of Christian burial took place at the Parish of St. Pio of Petrelcina in Lavallette. Burial took place at St. Gertrude cemetery in Colonia.

Edward B. Leonard
Edward B. Leonard, of Wall, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 1 at Care One at Wall. He was 82.

Born in Irvington, Edward had lived in the Vailsburg section of Newark until moving to Wall Township in 1967.

He was a graduate of Seton Hall Prep School and Seton Hall University and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed as a teacher in Newark for several years before continuing his career teaching in the Jackson Township School System. Ed later received his master’s degree and became a principal in Jackson, where he remained until his retirement.

Edward along with his late wife Marie were very well known and active community members. He was a longtime member of the Wall Republican Club, a committeeman in Monmouth County and a member of the Ocean County Sewerage Authority. He was also a communicant of Holy Innocents RC Church, Neptune since 1967.

He was predeceased by his wife Marie Kenyon Leonard in December 2003, his son Edward in 1989, and his parents Edward A. and Margaret Hanlon Leonard.

Ed is survived by his devoted daughter, Ellen Leonard Smith, of Wall; his grandson Wyatt E. Smith; his two sisters and spouses, Helen and Robert Wade, of Spring Lake, and Mary and Albert Smith, of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial took place at Holy Innocents RC Church in Neptune, and burial took place at St. Catharine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.

Matthew I. Skarzynski
Matthew I. Skarzynski, of Spring Lake, died on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011. He was 89.

He was born on November 3, 1922 to Joseph and Marianna Grzeszczuk Skarzynski in Fairview and grew up in Jersey City, where he graduated from Dickenson High School. Matt served our country during World War II enlisting in the United States Marine Corps 5th Air.

He graduated from Princeton University in June 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He did graduate work at New York University. Matt worked for Grumman Aircraft, Bell Laboratories and AT&T, until his retirement in 1984. Matt lived with wife Stephanie and their two sons in Maplewood before moving to Spring Lake in 1994.

He walked more than eight miles a day and was dubbed the “Spring Lake Walker” by the local newspaper; known to all as the friendly man who always had a funny story or a joke to tell.

Matt is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Stephanie Widejko Skarzynski; his sister Irene Skarzynski Daley; sons Robert [Judith] and Peter [Maureen] Skarzynski; and grandchildren Craig, Allana, Jana and Kara Skarzynski as well as many nieces and nephews.

Matt and Stephanie regularly attended St. Margaret & St Catharine Catholic Church Parish in Spring Lake.

Arrangements were under the direction of O'Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Committal will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, Tenn. or to St. John's Church, 22 Mulberry St., Newark.

John Paul Lytle
John Paul Lytle, of Sea Girt, died on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 83.

Mr. Lytle was a rent and housing supervisor for the Essex County Department of Citizens Services in Newark before retiring in 1990. He was a U.S. Army Veteran stationed in Alaska during peacetime. He attended Seton Hall University, South Orange. Mr. Lytle was a member of Our Lady of the Lake RC Church, Verona and St. Mark’s RC Church, Sea Girt. He was a member of both the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of the Lake Parish. He was an avid fisherman and expert carpenter. He loved to cook using fresh produce from his bountiful garden. John was happiest spending time with his grandchildren.

Born in Montclair, he lived in Verona most of his life before moving to Sea Girt in 1989.

Mr. Lytle was predeceased by his brothers William and Jimmy Lytle and granddaughter Nicole Buckmeier.

Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years Mary Lou Camarata Lytle; sons Joe Lytle and his wife Joan, of Wall, Paul Lytle and his wife Carol, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; daughters Denise Muniz and her husband Fred, of Broomfield, Colo., Lisa Margl and her husband Jim, of Sea Girt; brothers David Lytle, of Brick, Frank Lytle, of Hobe Sound, Fla., George Lytle, of Marlton, Joe Lytle, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; and sisters Margaret Crook, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Mary Nitschke, of Brick.

He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Rafael, Deborah and her husband Joseph, Connie and her husband Francis, William and his wife Kristen, and Eric, along with his loving great grandchildren Gavin and Katey.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Burial and Military Honors took place at St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall. Donations may be made in his name to Memorial Sloan- Kettering 1275 York Ave., New York, N.Y.
