Donald William Eckart
Donald William Eckart, of Wall Township, died at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 75.

Born in Neptune, Mr. Eckart grew up in Bradley Beach, then lived in Neptune before moving to Wall in 1969. He was a graduate of Monmouth College, Class of 1958.

In his early career, he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, Bradley Beach. After finishing his education, he was employed as a chemist for the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Monmouth for 43 years, retiring in 1995.

Donald was predeceased by his wife Marilyn Van Cleve Eckart in 2006 and his Granddaughter Kimmie in 1999.

He is survived by his son Matthew and his wife Chris Eckart, of Neptune City, and his son Andrew and his wife Lyn, of Irmo, S.C.; and a brother Joseph Eckart, of Bradley Beach. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Louis, Adam and Mercy Eckart and J T Farley.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Interment will follow in Monmouth Memorial Park cemetery in Tinton Falls. Visiting will be Thursday 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, P.O. Box 6062, Albert Lea, MN 56007-6662.

Joseph V. Ruger
Dublin, Ohio resident Joseph V. Ruger, formerly of Sea Girt, died Sunday, Feb. 1 at Emerald Crossing Care Center, Dublin.

He was 87 years old.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer with the New York State Supreme Court before retiring to Sea Girt and eventually moving to Dublin, Ohio in 2007. After graduating from Brooklyn Preparatory School, he attended Fordham University and then enlisted in the US Navy and served honorably in the Pacific Theatre. After returning from the war, he received his BS degree in physics from Fordham University and earned a law degree from New York Law. He was a devoted husband and loving father who always put his family first. All who knew him will miss his warm smile and great wit.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Ruger; and two brothers, George, in 1928, and John, in 1931 and a sister, Mary, in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Ruger of Dublin; his three daughters, Mary-Elizabeth and her husband Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth R. Foulks Jr. of Belford, Janet and her husband Jeffrey Rittershofer of Bel Air, Md., and Catherine and her husband Mac Levins of Dublin; and his ten grandchildren, Matthew, Kenneth III and Michael Foulks of Belford; Erin, Annie and Colin Rittershofer of Bel Air; and Katie, Christopher, Jack and Meg Levins of Dublin.

Internment was at his family plot at the Holy Trinity cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.

Donations may be made in the name of Joseph V. Ruger to St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 5750 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085.

Madeleine R. [Pat] Curry
Belmar resident Madeleine R. [Pat] Currie died Monday, March 2 surrounded by her family.

Pat was the daughter of the Honorable and Mrs. William V. Rafferty. She was born in East Orange, graduated East Orange High School and attended Dunbarton College in Washington D.C. In 1951, Pat married John Philip Currie of Braintree, Mass., and had five children. She was a business representative for NJ Bell Telephone, retiring in 1983. Pat was a devout parishioner of St. Rose Roman Catholic Church in Belmar. She served as the historian and librarian for the Spring Lake Women’s Club; was a member of St. Catherine’s SCAMP and the Bell Telephone Pioneers. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.

Pat was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, John P. Currie; two brothers, Lt. William V. Rafferty Jr., USN, and Father Columba John Rafferty OSB; a sister, Mary Elise Denk; and her parents.

She is survived by her son John William Currie of Belmar; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Anne Patricia and Charles Graff of Lansing, Mich., Mary Elizabeth and Peter Lynch of Cornish, N.H., Madeleine Martin of Wall, and Margaret M. Currie of New York City; and four grandchildren, Christopher R. Martin, Lindsay M. Currie, Maegen M. Currie and Peter Lynch.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose RC Church in Belmar. Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of New Jersey, which supports the Sisters of Mercy Mission of Asbury Park at 1645 Highway 22, Watchung 07060.

Marion Cecilia Voelkel
Brick resident Marion Cecilia Voelkel, with family in Wall, died Thursday, Feb. 26 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 90 years old.

Born in Union City, Marion lived in Union City before moving to Point Pleasant in 1978. Marion worked as the head of labor and delivery at Christ Hospital in Jersey City for 14 years before she became the nurse at Emerson High School in Union City. She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant. She was a member of AARP and the Red Hat Club at the Worthington Care Center, Brick. Marion enjoyed crafting.

Marion was predeceased by her parents George and Mary Campen, her brother George Campen and her beloved husband William F. Voelkel [Retired Union City Police Department] in 2000.

She is survived by her loving son William George Voelkel and his wife Mary of Wall. She was a devoted grandmother of Melissa Anne Dyer and her husband Robert of Port Richey, Fla., and Heather Allison Voelkel of Wall, and she was a dear great-grandmother of Emily Elizabeth Dyer, Allison Marie Dyer and James Michael Dyer.

Funeral arrangements were handled by O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Committal followed at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Francis J. “Frank” McGrath
West Belmar resident Francis J. “Frank” McGrath died Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Pope John Paul II Pavilion, Orange.

He was 69 years old.

Frank had been employed as an electrician with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was an active member of the Port Authority Division of Local No. 3 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, serving on the Wage & Policy Committee and leading the division as chairman for ten years. He was an avid and accomplished musician playing guitar and bass for several local bands in North Jersey and at the shore. He also composed music and sang with these same bands.

Born in Jersey City, he had resided there and in West Belmar section of Wall his entire life. He was a proud veteran of the US Army.

Frank was predeceased by his parents Thomas J. and Veronica E. Burke McGrath.

He is survived by his devoted wife Elizabeth McCullough McGrath; his loving son Sean and his wife Christina; his loving siblings and their spouses Elizabeth and Dominick Colarusso of Wall, Thomas and Ellen McGrath of Melbourne, Fla., and Vincent and Marcene McGrath of Johnson City, N.Y.; his dear in-laws Ginny and Tom Flahive, Eileen and Gerard Wihlborg, John and Susan McCullough, Mary Claire McCullough, and Joe and Chantal McCullough; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, March 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church, Belmar. Burial in the NJ Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to the Block Institute, 376 Bay 44th Street Brooklyn, N. Y. 11214 in his memory.

Dorothy S. Nielsen
Wall resident Dorothy S. Nielsen died Tuesday, March 3 peacefully at home.

She was born the daughter of Anna and Nicholas Schwartz on Oct. 10, 1917. “Dottie” was a graduate of Hamilton Township High School, Trenton. After her marriage she resided in Brielle for 47 years. In 1989 she moved to her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Wall Township. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Denis as well as the St. Denis Alter Rosary Society. When her children were young she enjoyed spending days at the beach. She served as den mother to a local Boy Scout Troop. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards with her bridge and pinochle groups. Dorothy loved to bake and had annual “fudge” cook-offs with her husband at Christmas time each year. She always enjoyed sitting at the Manasquan Inlet watching the boats, fisherman and families heading to the beach.

Dottie was predeceased by her husband, Charles Wolfe in 1986 and her son-in-law, William Wolfe in 2007. She was also predeceased by her parents as well as her brothers Nicholas, William and Charles and sisters Anna Reed and Elizabeth Tait.

She is survived by her daughters Catherine Wolfe of Wall, with whom she lived and Mary Nielsen of Neptune and a son and his wife, John and Patti Nielsen of Manasquan. “Grammy” also leaves her grandsons and their wives: Shawn and Debbie Nielsen of Brielle, Brett and Flora Nielsen of Manasquan and granddaughter, Erin Kate Nielsen of Point Pleasant as well as great-grandchildren, Finley and Magnus Nielsen. Dot is also survived by her cousin, Thomas Bates of Trenton as well as many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday 9:30 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, 3rd Ave and Ludlow Avenue, Spring Lake. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum, Wall. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105.

Margaret R. [nee Rohr] Gedrowicz
Manasquan resident Margaret R. [nee Rohr] Gedrowicz died Thursday, Feb. 26 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 93 years old.

Born in Newark, she lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to Manasquan 59 years ago.

Mrs. Gedrowicz was a secretary for the Irvington High School before retiring. She was a member of the St. Dennis Seniors in Manasquan and life member of the Polish University of N.J. and the Polish Cultural Foundation. She was a former treasurer and active member of the Womens Club in Manasquan.

Mrs. Gedrowicz was pre-deceased by her husband of 66 years, Frank, in 2008.

She is survived by her three nieces, Jean Gedrowicz Treas and her husband Ray, Catherine Gedrowicz, and Julie Otani and her husband Tsunao and their daughter Susan Fischera and her husband Kevin and their children, and her grand nephew Staff Sgt. Christopher Treas and his wife Rebecca and their children Dylan and Logan Treas. She is also survived by her devoted live-in caregiver Vera Sukelova.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Neary Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Interment followed at Hollywood Cemetery, Union.

Joan T. Hanley
Spring Lake Heights resident Joan T. Hanley died Saturday, Feb. 28 at Sunnyside Manor, Manasquan.

She was 81 years old.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1927 in Glendale, N.Y. Joan moved to the Jersey Shore in 1966 after a career at AT&T. She lived in Spring Lake Heights for many years. She was a communicant of St. Catharine and St. Margaret Church in Spring Lake and enjoyed singing in the choir.

She is survived by her daughter Michele Hanley Gibson and her husband Thomas Neal and grandson Thomas John of Cobham, Surrey, U.K.; her sisters Marguerite Moriarity, Geraldine O’Mara and Sheila Waters; and her brothers Raymond Gannon and Donald Gannon and his wife Jean.

Visitation will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St. Belmar. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home tomorrow at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Entombment will take place at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum, Wall.

Ernest William Clayton
Salesville, Ohio resident Ernest William Clayton, formerly of Wall, died Monday, Feb. 23 in his home.

He was 75 years old.

He was born on July 17, 1933 in Wall Township, son of the late Ernest Post Clayton and Agnes M. [Allen] Clayton.

Mr. Clayton had previously operated the King Hill Dairy Farm on Allaire Road in Wall. He also previously operated a dairy farm in the Mt. Vernon area. Later on, he was also a driller and heavy equipment operator for R&F Coal for many years.

He was a very close friend with the Amish community. He ran a shuttle service for many of them and transported 11 children to and from school every day.

He attended Mt. Zion Church in Quaker City, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Mary Catherine [Dodson] Clayton on Aug. 12, 2005. They were married on June 2, 1962.

He is survived by a son, Tom [Kerry] Clayton of Cambridge; a daughter, Cathy A. Clayton of Salesville; three brothers, Allen Jerome [Marie] Clayton of Bricktown, Alvie F. Clayton [Marion Klein] of Maryland, and Harry N. [Donette] Clayton of Bricktown; eight grandchildren, Heather M. Clayton, Chevy T. Clayton, Amanda D. Clayton, Austin T. Clayton, Allen R. Sherry, Steven Ancell and Samantha Lynn Clayton; a great-grandchild, Paden Bryce Johnson; and many friends and neighbors.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City, Ohio. Burial took place at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, Ohio.
