Gerald “Jerry” Werdann
Gerald “Jerry” Werdann, 77, of Brick with family in Manasquan and Wall, died on Tuesday, June 11, at his home with his family by his side.

Gerald was born in Newark and raised in Montclair and Bloomfield. He and his wife lived and raised their family in Cedar Grove before moving to Brick about 10 years ago.

Jerry was an Air Force veteran. Jerry was self-employed working in the wholesale produce market. He also ran the Sub Manor in Patterson and Newark. Jerry enjoyed playing golf and was very proud of his grandchildren and all their accomplishments. He was also a member of the VFW in Brick.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents Henry and Mildred Werdann; two sisters Jean Madison and Peggy Antonacci; a brother James Werdann and a great aunt Sister Anne Thomasina Cavanaugh.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Patricia Werdann [nee Fahmie] of Brick, a daughter and her husband Linda and Colin Wynd of Manasquan, two sons Gerald H. and Joyce Werdann of Brick and Michael and Doreen Werdann of Wall; six grandchildren: Brianna, Gerald, Kathryn, Joseph, Jenna and Trentin.

Jerry also leaves behind four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marion Beck of Toms River, Helen and Rich Taggart of Wall, Kathryn and Moize Hendizadeh of Phoenix, Ariz. and Wilma and Allan Jackson of Millville; and his in-laws Thomas Fahmie, Judith Scomback, Wayne Fahmie and Joan Fahmie Sieck.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation Thursday, June 13, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at St. Denis Church, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Denis School, 119 Virginia Avenue, Manasquan or American Diabetes Association PO Box 11454 Alexandria, Va. 22312.

James Neral
James R. Neral, Lt. Col., USAF, Ret., 89, of Damascus, Pa., formerly of Point Pleasant, died Thursday, June 6.

Born in Johnstown, Pa., to the late Charles and Emma Neral, he was raised there and for many years lived in Point Pleasant before moving to Damascus 20 years ago.

He graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1941 and attended Pennsylvania State College.

In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served as a B-26 bomber pilot during World War II and flew 49 combat missions in the European Theatre of Operations. He was awarded the Air Medal, with eight gold leaf clusters, and the Legion d’Honneur Medal from France for his heroic contributions toward the liberation of their country.

He transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserves and in 1967 was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring from a career of dedicated service to the United States of America.

In civilian life, Jim worked at the Naval Weapons Station Earle and retired as Supervisory Personnel Director.

He had served as choir director at both Saint Martha, Point Pleasant, and Saint Dominic, Brick, parishes. He was a life member of the VFW, Point Pleasant Beach Post No. 4715; the American Legion, Point Pleasant Post No. 23; B.P.O. Elks, Point Pleasant Lodge No. 1698; the Air Force Association; the Marauder Historical Society; and the Reserve Officer’s Association.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lenore Bermes Neral, who he married in 1950. Surviving relatives include his brother, Noel Neral of Brick; and 20 nieces, nephews, and their families scattered from New Jersey to California and also in Michigan and Mississippi.

Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at Saint Catharine Cemetery, Sea Girt.

As an expression of sympathy, donations made in his memory to Holy Cross Parish, Calliccon, N.Y. would be appreciated.

Doris E. LoSasso
Doris E LoSasso, 90, died on Thursday, June 6 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. Born in Jersey City, Doris lived in Hudson County before relocating to Point Pleasant Borough in 1975.

Doris worked in sales at Martell’s Sweet Shoppe in Point Pleasant Beach and truly enjoyed commuting to work on her bicycle with a smile in tow. She was a parishioner of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Point Pleasant Beach and worked as a volunteer at the church as well.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Donato “Dewey” LoSasso in 1994.

Doris is survived by her son Thomas “Dewey” LoSasso and her daughters Diane Leonardi and Kathleen “Kathy” Romano as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Entombment was at St. Catherine cemetery in Sea Girt.

Dorothy Sonzogni
Dorothy Ann Sobush Sonzogni, 84, of Brick with family in Point Pleasant, died suddenly on Friday, June 7.

Born in Chicago to the late Jack and Mary Sobush, she had lived in Union City and in Point Pleasant before moving to Brick.

Mrs. Sonzogni served in the US Navy Nurse Corps during the Korean War and for many years worked as a registered nurse at Christ Hospital, Jersey City.

She enjoyed to read, sew, and crochet.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph J. Sonzogni in 1998.

Surviving are two daughters, Michele Burlington and her husband Frank of Ridgefield Park and Mary Jo Cleary of Brick; one son, Matthew Sonzogni and his wife Joan of Point Pleasant; her brother, James Czysen and his wife Dorothy; her sister, Philomena Fletcher and her husband Pete; and four grandchildren, Alexis Seiferling, Nicholas Maximillian Frega, and Matthew & Michael Sonzogni.

Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at the NJ Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.

Charlotte G. Bergmann
Charlotte G. Bergmann, 81, of Point Pleasant, died Wednesday, June 5.

Born in Hackensack to the late John Leo and Charlotte Mann, she lived in Old Tappan and then in Point Pleasant for 44 years. She was a graduate of Dumont High School, Ocean County College School of Nursing, Stockton State College and Farleigh-Dickinson University.

Charlotte worked as a dedicated registered nurse and was employed by Meridian Health at Point Pleasant Hospital and Ocean Medical Center in Brick, retiring as associate director of nursing in 1994. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Kenneth A. Bergmann, Sr.; three daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Thomas Mahon of Point Pleasant, Jennifer and her husband Frank Ruzicka of Easton, Pa., and Kathleen and her husband William Luell III of Friendswood, Texas; her son, Kenneth A. Bergmann, Jr. of Toms River; and three grandchildren, Sara, Melissa and William Luell IV.

In accordance with her wishes, services and cremation will be held privately under the direction of the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.

David Morcom
David Edward Morcom, 35, of Point Pleasant Beach died Tuesday, May 7 at his residence . David was born in Morristown and was a lifelong resident of Ocean County. He was a graduate of Point Pleasant Boro High School and attended Brookdale Community College studying music theory.

David is predeceased by his mother, Sandra Edna Clark; and his father, Peter Edward Politowicz. He is survived by a son, Xian David Morcom of South Toms River; a sister, Laureen Maver of Madison; a nephew, John Maver; and niece, Christie Maver.

David was a kind and gentle soul and we invite all to join us for an open memorial service to celebrate his life at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at Ocean County Memorial Park, Silverton.

Jersey Shore Cremation Service, 36 Broad St., Manasquan is entrusted with the arrangements.

Camille LaFredo Carcich
Camille LaFredo Carcich, 77, of Point Pleasant, passed away, Wednesday, May 15. Born in Fairview, she was formerly of Manasquan and has lived Point Pleasant for 15 years.

Surviving are five children, Ann Warwick and her husband Leonard, John Carcich and his wife Joan, Denise Simon and her husband Jim, Thomas Carcich and his wife Kate, and James Carcich and his wife Lisa. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Lenny, Katie, Matt, Jimmy, A.J., Christina, Michelle, Allison, Nick, Sofia, and Chris, and two great-grandsons, Logan and Griffin.

Services and cremation were held privately and arranged by the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant.

Edna M. Becker
Edna M. Becker, 85, of Point Pleasant, passed away on Friday, May 10 at Claremont Care Center in Point Pleasant.

Born in Weehawken, she lived in Menlo Park before moving to Point Pleasant in 1960. She was an executive secretary for the President of the Ocean County National Bank until her retirement. She was a Point Pleasant troop leader for the Girl Scouts, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Point Pleasant Fire Company Number One, and a member of the PTA in Point Pleasant.

Edna was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Becker, in 1995 and by her brother, Warren Thorpe. She is survived by her daughters Lynne Cipolla and her husband David of Point Pleasant and Leslie R. Becker and her wife Lindsay of Hackensack; her sisters Patricia Bodnar of Lakewood and Lynn Powell of Pompton Plains; and her beloved granddaughter, Leah Cipolla of Olympia, Wash.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave. in Point Pleasant Beach. A funeral Service will be held on Monday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles H. Schmitter
Charles H. Schmitter, 86, of New York City and Bay Head passed away on April 17.

Charles was the husband of the late Margaret Schmitter, and the loving son of the late Charles Schmitter and Jennie Schmitter of High Bridge. He is survived by his cousins Jean M. Jellema of Pompton Plains, RuthAnn Priuksma of Hawthorne, and Robert Stelpstra of Waldwick, his sister in law Sarah Kellis of Louisville, Ky., his brother-in-law Thomas Roose of Sudbury, Mass., his nephew Michael Bonvillain of Los Angeles, Calif., and his niece Betsy Kamin of Houston.

Charles was a graduate of Rutgers University and Columbia Law School. After completing law school, he performed his military service in counter intelligence.

He worked for a number of years at the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore before joining the Ford Motor Company as assistant secretary in 1959. It was during his time that he met and married Margaret Ann “Penny” Roose, with whom he shared 25 years of happy marriage.

He was appointed secretary of Sperry Rand Corporation and moved to New York City in 1964, where he remained until his retirement in 1989.

Funeral arrangements were made by Anderson Campbell in Whiting.

Bernardine Duffy
Bernardine Duffy, nee Clancy, 87, died on Friday, May 10 peacefully in her sleep with family by her side.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she was the only child of Carolyn Reilly and Kenneth Clancy. Bernardine married Beauvais “Jack” Duffy in 1951 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and later moved to Point Pleasant Beach in 1957, where they raised their eight children.

Her family took great pride in her life’s many achievements. A 1947 graduate of Hunter College in New York City, she earned her J.D. at New York University’s School of Law in 1950, where she was one of three women in her graduating class. Later, while in her forties, Bernardine returned to school to obtain her second advanced education degree in library science and went on to enjoy a fulfilling career at the Brick branch of the Ocean County Library system, retiring in 2001. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the theater, and loved to travel.

Bernardine was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 1977 and her grandson, Christopher, an Iraq war hero, in 2004. She is survived by her children Sean Duffy and his wife Lynda, Brendan Duffy, Michael Duffy and his wife Joan, Kieran Duffy, Anne Duffy Bayliss and her husband Jay, Maura Duffy Vergari and her husband Antonio, Brian Duffy, and Megan Duffy Appleby and her husband Kevin. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Saint Martha on Herbertsville Road in Point Pleasant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, 185 Brick Boulevard, Brick 08724 [www.jerseyshoreanimalshelter.org] would be appreciated. Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home in Point Pleasant Beach was in charge of the arrangements.
