Helen Toomey Young
Tinton Falls resident Helen Toomey Young, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Thursday, March 22 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 89 years old.

Mrs. Young was a graduate of Montclair State College. After this, she had been employed as a kindergarten teacher for nine years and then as a school administrator as the director of special Services for the Ocean Township Board of Education for 12 years retiring in 1979.

Mrs. Young was born in Trenton and had lived in Spring Lake Heights for 16 years, Point Pleasant for 17 years, and then in Morehead City, N.C. for 14 years before moving to Tinton Falls in June 1999.

She attended St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Spring Lake and had volunteered for 14 years at Cartaret General Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert G. Young, in August 1995 and by her brother, John B. Brown.

Surviving are her son, A. Gardner Young Jr. of Pawcatuck, Conn.; two daughters, Marilyn Wehner of Spring Lake and Diane B. Young of Nutley; a twin sister Dorothy T. Beck of Owls Head, Maine and three grandchildren, Crystal Young and Meredith and Paul Wehner.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society of the North Carolina Aquarium, 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512 in memory of Mrs. Young.

Groa Luzzi
Point Pleasant Beach resident Groa Luzzi died Tuesday, March 27 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 78 years old

Born in Akranas, Iceland, she lived in Belmar before moving to Point Pleasant Beach in 1962. She was a member and communicant of St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant Beach.

Mrs. Luzzi was predeceased by her husband, Frederick, in 1973; and her two sisters, Anna and Sigrun Danieldottir of Iceland.

Surviving are four sons, Frederick M. Luzzi of Point Pleasant Beach, Michael E. Luzzi and his wife Mary Ann of Shark River Hills, Neptune, Jeffrey Luzzi and his wife Shana of Colts Neck and Daniel Luzzi of Point Pleasant Beach; a daughter, Laura Ann Luzzi of Point Pleasant Beach; two brothers, Sigureur and Margeir Danielson of Iceland; two sisters, Hresna and Dora Danieldottir of Iceland; and four grandchildren, Sean and Scott Sexton, and Alexa and Colt Luzzi.

Family and friends will gather at Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D Street, Belmar at 9:30 a.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St.Rose Church, Belmar. Interment will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Joseph A. Muszel
Brick Township resident Joseph A. Muszel, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Saturday, March 24 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 57 years old.

Born in Whitestone, N.Y., he lived in Point Pleasant before moving to Brick five years ago.

He was employed as an ordinance worker for the United States Naval Depot Earle, Colts Neck, for 30 years, retiring in 2005. He served in the United States Air Force. He was an avid gardener, who grew tomatoes and peppers, and loved fishing, crabbing and the ponies.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Mascarella; sons, Joseph Muszel of Brick and Michael Miccio of Easton, Pa.; a sister in law, Tara Lee Mascarella-Santiago of Manchester; brothers John and Karl Muszel, both of New York; sisters, Barbara Fooks of Ohio, Marie McGee of Howell and Sandra Fritz of Red Bank; and many nieces and nephews.

Colonial Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association or the Brick First Aid Squad would be appreciated.

Dona Jean Van Schoick
Quechee, Vt. resident Dona Jean Van Schoick, formerly of Bay Head, died Tuesday March 20, after a courageous two and one-half year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was 59 years old.

She never complained and was always upbeat about life.

Dona grew up in Bay Head and moved to Vermont 36 years ago.

She graduated from Northfield School for Girls, Northfield, Mass., and Katherine Gibbs, New York City. She was a bookkeeper for The Quechee Club, Quechee, Vt., before retiring to care for her parents, Elenore and Raymond “Babe” Van Schoick, who predeceased her.

Dona was a loving sister and sister-in-law to Judith Van Schoick of San Francisco; John and Suzanne Van Schoick of Bay Head; and Peter and Susan Van Schoick of Quechee.

She was the much-loved aunt and great-aunt to John and Jill Van Schoick and their children, John III and Matthew of Point Pleasant Beach; Virginia Van Schoick and John Muirhead and their son, Andrew of Takoma Park, Md.; Adele Van Schoick and her children, Bentley and Aedan of Quechee, Vt.; and Ryan Van Schoick of Quechee, Vt.

Dona was an avid gardener. She had the most beautiful perennial gardens, and her tomato and vegetable garden was the best! She always had a paperback book to read, and what a great cook! [Especially her cakes and cookies]

Dona loved all animals and had many pets throughout the years, “Charlie, ” her dog, “Toughy, ”her cat, and her new little kitten, “Trouble, ” to name a few.

She also knit the coziest afghans for her family.

We will all miss Dona and will always remember the special person Dona was and never forget the many thoughtful contributions she made to our lives and all who knew her.

Dorothy Seaman Johnson
Red Bank resident Dorothy Seaman Johnson, whose son lives in Point Pleasant Beach, died on Monday, March 26.

She was 98 years old.

Born in 1908 in Passaic, Dorothy graduated from Passaic High School and Montclair State College, after which she taught kindergarten in the Passaic school system. In 1930,

She married Charles F.H. Johnson Jr., also of Passaic, who predeceased her in 1980. During their years in Colts Neck, Dorothy and Charles were actively involved in the New Jersey thoroughbred horse industry and raced under the yellow, blue and red silks of Bernadotte Stables. Dorothy was an ardent supporter of the Monmouth Park Charities, and for many years chaired various committees of that association. In 1997, after 50 years of service, she was honored as “Woman of the Year.”

Dorothy was an active member of the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury, where she served as deacon, flower chairman and chairman of the church’s first antique show and sale.

Dorothy was a chartered life member and past president of the Shrewsbury Garden Club. For many years, she also did volunteer work for Monarc, Lunch Break, Meals-on-Wheels and Planned Parenthood.

She was predeceased by her parents, Charles G. Seaman and Anna Mae Walker; and her sisters, Elva S. Dyche of Spring Lake, and Marie Josephson of Venice, Fla.

She is survived by her son, Charles F. H. Johnson III of Point Pleasant Beach; her daughter, Dorothy Ingrid McLoughlin of Charlottesville, Va.; four grandchildren, Sigrid Seymour, Kenneth Poppe, Charles Johnson IV, and Katharin Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Rylan Johnson and Taylor Ann Seymour; her nieces, Barbara Betts, Susan Sansiveri, and Barbara Molner; and her nephew, Edgar Josephson.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury. John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Alexander John Sip
Point Pleasant resident Henry Alexander John Sip died Friday, March 23 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune

He was 68 years old.

Born in Holland, The Netherlands, he grew up in Australia and also had lived in Peekskill, N.Y., residing in Point Pleasant for 10 years.

A comptroller, Mr Sip had been employed by various companies including Cameron Textiles, New York, prior to his retirement.

He was an avid “fixer-upper” and all-around home handyman. He also had a passion for sailing.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Wendy Mercaldi Sip; two sons, Brion Sip and his wife Dina of Point Pleasant and Darren Sip of Yonkers, N.Y.; and his sister Nora VanDeLaar-Sip, of Holland.

Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1035 Hooper Ave., Toms River, 08753.

Charles DeMichele
Manasquan resident Charles “Charlie” DeMichele III, whose aunt and uncle live in Point Pleasant, died on March 20.

He was 9 years old.

Charlie attended third grade at Manasquan Elementary School. He was born in Brick Township on Aug. 6, 1997.

He was a very sweet boy who was a Boy Scout and enjoyed playing soccer. He loved to play and be with his cousins. Charlie also loved swimming and was learning to surf. Charlie will be immensely missed by his family and friends.

Charlie was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Thomas J. Reilly Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Kathleen J. Reilly DeMichele of Manasquan; his father, Charles J. DeMichele Jr. of Palm Springs Garden, Fla.; his paternal grandfather, Charles J. DeMichele Sr. of Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Johnson of Wall; and his maternal step grandfather Robert Johnson of Belmar.

Charlie is also survived by his aunt Dawn DeMichele, aunt Sherri and uncle Preston Bernacki, all of Florida; uncle Tommy Reilly III and aunt Kathy of Point Pleasant; his extremely distraught godmother aunt Patti and uncle Joe Bossone of Manasquan; cousins Rachel and John Donovan of New York; and Christin Guarino, Meredith, Joseph and Nicholas Bossone, all of Manasquan, and many dear friends and extended family members who are deeply grief-stricken by such a tragedy.

Orender Family Home for Funerals in Wall was in charge of the arrangements. Interment was at Greenwood cemetery in Brielle.
