Naomi G. Jernstedt
Naomi G. Jernstedt, 84, of Wall Township died on peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 1 at the Geraldine Thompson Care Center in Allenwood.
Born in Paterson, she moved to Ocean Grove in 1946, before moving to Wall Township 44 years ago. Mrs. Jernstedt worked as a switchboard operator with New Jersey Bell of Asbury Park and then as a sales person at the Steinbach Department Store in Asbury Park before retiring many years ago.
She was predeceased by her parents Hardy McCown and Tillie Sugarbaker McCown, and her beloved husband of 59 years Walter E. Jernstedt in 2005.
Mrs. Jernstedt is survived by her loving children Linda Hendrell of Arizona, Walter 'Eddie' Jernstedt of Toms River, Sonja J. Jernstedt of Pennsylvania, and Nelson Jernstedt of Neptune, her five cherished grandchildren, and her two special great grandchildren.
Services are private under the direction of the Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Wall Township.

Lawrence J. Cristello
Mr. Lawrence Joseph Cristello, of Belmar, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 25 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. He was 51 years old.
Larry was an innkeeper and owner of the Cozy Manor Bed and Breakfast in Belmar, which he owned with his beloved wife Melody. Larry was born in Tarrytown, N.Y. and raised in Croton - on -Hudson, N.Y. He worked in the family business, eventually taking over Cristello Plumbing and Heating when his father retired. He moved to Belmar in 2001 and with the help of family and friends totally renovated and opened the beautiful Cozy Manor Bed and Breakfast.
Larry is survived by his wife, Melody MacDougall Cristello, his parents Joseph L. and Eleanor Cristello of Bearfoot Bay Fla., his brother and sister in law Thomas L. and Amanda Cristello of Randolph, his stepson, Thomas Burns, his granddaughter Michelle Burns, his two nephews Joseph and David Cristello and his niece Avery Cristello.
The Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers donations in his name to Petfinder.com would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara N. Brown
Barbara N. Brown, 86, of Sea Girt died Friday, Jan. 29 at her home.
Born in Annalong, County Down, Ireland, she lived in Yonkers, N.Y., Long Branch and Manasquan, before moving to Sea Girt 37 years ago.
Mrs. Brown was a business administrator for many school districts before retiring in 1988. She was a member of Sea Girt Borough Council from 1999-2005, chairperson of the Personnel Committee, served on the Recreation and Library Committee, Labor Negotiation Team, Women's Club and the Garden Club, all of Sea Girt, She was a member of the Monmouth County Association of School Business Officials and the NJ Council of Education.
Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her husband, Russell in 1983 and is survived by two cousins, Marie Lutz of Tinton Falls and Christine Oxley of Lincoln, Park. Also surviving are several great-nieces and nephews.
The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was held in Atlantic View cemetery in Manasquan.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Salvation Army or Monmouth County Humane Society, are appreciated.

Howard 'Howie' Patrick DeCoursey
Howard "Howie" Patrick DeCoursey, 75, of Bradley Beach passed away on Jan. 28 at Jersey Shore Hospital.
Howie was born April 7, 1934 in Manhattan to Joseph and Evelyn.
Howie is survived by his three children, Sean Patrick of Bradley Beach, Christopher Patrick of Wharton and Elizabeth Patricia of Hackettstown. Howie was survived by 6 grandchildren, Shannon 14, Mairead 12, Helen 11, Sean Patrick 9, Declan 6 and Rosaleen 5.
Howie was predeceased by his wife Helen 'Betty' and his brother, Joseph. He is survived by his sister, Joan McCauley of Hopatcong, and nephews and nieces Brian McCauley, John McCauley, Michael McCauley, Debbie Rinaldi, Pam Sportelli, Joanne McGinnis, Kevin DeCoursey and Tara DeCoursey.
Howie lived in Hopatcong for 30 years where he and his wife, Betty, raised their family, before he moved to Bradley Beach in 2003 to live with his son, Sean and wife, Kathy, where he made many good friends.
Howie was a member of the Bradley Beach Fishing Club. He was also an avid stained glass artist and enjoyed sharing his creations with family and friends. Howie often baked cheesecakes and other treats to give to friends and neighbors. He could often be seen enjoying the warmth of the sun reading the paper on his porch and keeping an eye on the neighborhood. Prior to losing his leg in April 2009, he was regularly seen about town on his beloved motorcycle.
He spent most of his life in the field of commercial heating and air conditioning maintenance and operations, and retired from the Jersey City Water Department.
Howie will be remembered for his quick wit and true grit. He persevered in the face of many challenges, including losing his wife, Betty, of 32 years, and the unexpected loss of his leg. He was admired by many and will be missed by all.

Gwendolyn M. Patterson
Gwendolyn M Patterson, 82, of Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Manasquan, passed away on Jan. 27.
Born in Belmar, she lived most of her life in Spring Lake Heights and Manasquan before moving to Pompano Beach in 1995. She was a registered nurse at Point Pleasant Hospital and later was the school health nurse for Manasquan Elementary School. She enjoyed fishing, reading, and needlework.
She is survived by her loving husband, Charles E. Patterson, daughter and son-in-law Susan and James Hockler, son Robert C. Patterson, daughter and son- in-law, Nancy and Joseph Coccia.
She leaves and will be deeply missed by grandchildren James Jr. and Eryn Hockler, Robert C. Patterson, Jr., Joseph III, Matthew and Elizabeth Coccia. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law William and Sally Chamberlain.
Memorialization will be by cremation, by the All County Funeral Home, Lake Worth, Fla.

Lorraine M. McPherson
Lorraine M. McPherson, of Belmar, passed away suddenly on Jan. 29 at Centra State Hospital in Freehold, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. She was 62 years old.
Lorraine worked for Foodoroma Corporation in Freehold as an accounts payable clerk. She was a communicant of the church of Saint Rose in Belmar. Lorraine was born in Jersey City, raised in Kearny and moved to Belmar in 1994. She attended Jersey City State College.
Lorraine is predeceased by her husband John McPherson, her parents Michael J. and Sarah Briscoe, and her brother Michael J. Briscoe Jr. She is survived by her son Jamie McPherson of Hawaii and her daughter Heather Anne McPherson and her fiancé Connor Egan of Belmar, her brothers Thomas A. Briscoe and his wife Pat of Naples Fla., John F. Briscoe and his wife Kathleen of Spring Lake, her nieces and nephews, Bonnie Chase, Colleen Briscoe, Marybeth Thomas, Kaitlin Briscoe, Sherry McCain, Pam Johnson, Tricia Cannon, Melissa Briscoe and Michael Briscoe and Charlie, Lynn and Neil McPherson.
Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of arrangements. Committal will be held privately. In lieu of flowers donations to The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties would be appreciated.

Edna Behr Doucha
Edna Behr Doucha, 101, of Red Bank, whose granddaughters live in Point Pleasant, died at The Atrium at Navesink Harbor on Dec. 17.
She celebrated her 101st birthday on Dec. 12 with her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Otto, in 1989.
Edna was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1909 and moved to Union Beach when she was seven. She loved New Jersey and thought there was no better place to live.
Edna and Otto opened Daylight Bakery in 1933, in South Amboy, and operated the business for 17 years, helping with the supply of foodstuffs during the war. Edna was also an ambulance driver for the Motor Corps during World War II. Her quick mind and bright intellect helped with the varied businesses she and her husband acquired during their marriage. They owned and operated Oil Tank Fabricators in Belford, Bayshore Hardware, and Bayshore Repair Services in Keyport. Edna also continued to have a keen interest in real estate during her life, and held a real estate license for many years.
Edna was a charter member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Middletown. She became an attendee of the Embury Methodist Church in Little Silver, participating in several musical programs. She was a member of the Golden Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, in Keyport; a past president of the Keyport Literary Club; and a member of the Past Presidents' Club 5th District NJ State Federation of Women's Clubs, for which she was recently honored. After retiring from the business world, Edna was an original and dedicated volunteer at Bayshore Community hospital for over 20 years.
Before her marriage, she worked for the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark in the real estate department.
When she was a young woman, Edna was a Sunday School teacher at Grace Methodist Church in Union Beach, and was a Girl Scout leader. She also helped organize and was a member of the True Blue Club, Union Beach, a card club that met biweekly for over 65 years. She was also vice president of the South Amboy PTA.
After losing her sight 17 years ago, Edna became a member of the New Jersey Blind Citizens Association and spent many a day at Camp Happiness in Leonardo. Losing her sight only stopped her from driving, which she dearly loved, but it never stopped her from enjoying her favorite things in life, like playing the piano, playing pool, and her beloved bridge and canasta, which she taught her children and grandchildren to play. She knew over 160 songs for the piano by heart and could play by ear. Edna always had a positive attitude and was grateful for her wonderful life.
Edna is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Joyce Naulty of Red Bank and Pompano Beach, Fla; Carol Eckenfelder of Point Pleasant and Sarasota, Fla.; and Judith VanVliet, of Annapolis, Md.; seven grandchildren: William and Fred Joyce, Robin Hahner, Barbara Caccavale, Lynn O'Hara, Susan Paviluk, and Amy Tupper; 12 great-grandchildren and her remaining extended family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Patrick Shea, M.D.
Arthur P. Shea died peacefully, surrounded by loving family and friends, on Dec. 21.
He was born to John and Julia Shea on Sept. 5, 1938 in the Bronx, New York. The youngest of five boys, he graduated from Manhattan College in New York, and later earned his medical degree from U. C. Galway, Ireland.
After completing his residency at Hartford Hospital, Conn., he was called to serve in the United States Naval Corps. Arthur served as a medic in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, were he earned the rank of lieutenant commander. During his service, Arthur was decorated with the Navy Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star.
After Vietnam, Arthur moved to Point Pleasant Beach and worked at the Point Pleasant Hospital as an anestheologist, later becoming the head of that department.
During his time at Point Pleasant Hospital, he came to meet the love of his life, Judy. They married in 1980 and began 30 years of togetherness: bike rides, books, laughter and love. Arthur, also known as 'Doc' to many of his family and friends, was extremely humble and known to be quiet, but had a great mind and a quick wit.
In 1992, he retired to begin his new life of playing golf with Pat, John and Bernie. He also continued to take vacations with his lifelong friends, David and Nancy Lopez.
Arthur was predeceased by his brothers, James and Edward. And he is survived by his brothers, John and wife Francine, brother Richard, and Edward's wife, Lori. Arthur leaves behind nine loving nephews and their families. Judy's brother, Bruce Turton, wife Diane, and family will also miss 'Doc' dearly.
Arthur had a loving relationship with stepchildren and adored his grandchildren. Albert, Kimberlee, Kyle, Andrew and Cameron Barnes, as well as Richard, Kate, RJ and William Otto, and Emily and Jennifer Wells.
Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant Beach.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach.
Cremation will be private.

Alan Alfred Howardell
A Mass of Christian burial for Alan Alfred Howardell, 65, who died at his home on Saturday, Dec 11, was held on Dec. 15 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, in Woodstock, Vt.
Alan was born Sept. 25, 1945 in Rahway, the son of Alfred Jewett and Anna Louise [Sprock] Howardell.
Alan graduated from Rahway High School in 1963. In December of that same year, he entered into the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge Nov. 25, 1965, then was discharged from Reserve Obligation Dec. 29, 1969. Alan was a member of the 121st Aviation Company [Soc-Trang Tigers] 80th Transportation Detachment. Soc Trang was a major U.S. Army air station located in the Mekong Delta, 95 miles southwest of Saigon. He received training in helicopter repair at Fort Eustis, Va.; warrant officer indoctrination training, pre-flight - Class 64-7 at the U.S. Army Primary Helicopter School, Fort Wolters, Mineral Wells, Texas; and received the rank of Sp4 E-4 [T].
For his military service, Alan received many medals. Under Gen. William Westmoreland, he received the Air Medal for distinguishing himself by meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight in support of combat ground forces of the Republic of Vietnam during the period of Jan. 9, 1965 to June 9, 1965.
Other decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations and campaign ribbons awarded included the AFEM [Vietnam] and Sharpshooter [Rifle M-14].
After serving in the U.S. Army, he received an associate's degree in applied science, fire science, graduating cum laude from Ocean County College in Toms River. Alan also received training in: Fire Ground Commander [National Fire Protection Association, Public Fire Protection Division]; Emergency Response-Level 1 Operational [New Jersey/New York Hazardous Materials Worker Training Center]; hazardous materials chemistry, warehousing improved efficiency/reduced cost through computerization, automation and mechanization [The George Washington University]; National Fire Incident Reporting System [Ocean County Department of Law and Public Safety, Department of Emergency Services]; industrial firefighting [Burlington County Fire Academy]; Fire Inspector H.H.S., Fire Inspector I.C.S., and Fire Protection Inspector R.C.S. [Ocean County College]; fire officers training, advanced truck operation, light rescue, forcible entry and hazardous material, leader effectiveness, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, special problems, Staff and Command School, fire fighting with foam, search and rescue [New Jersey State Fire College]; pump operations [New Jersey State College]; transportation tanker [Dover Township Fire Academy]; shipboard firefighting [Department of the Navy].
Alan's longest occupation was as a manager for laboratory services at MERCK Pharmaceuticals. He began working for MERCK in 1965 and retired from MERCK on Dec. 30, 2000 [35-year career]. He oversaw roughly 105 people, including middle management and union personnel, and his department served approximately 4, 500 research personnel.
He was also involved in the planning of several research buildings on site, and was a member of the union contracting negotiation team while supporting the MERCK side. He was the 'go-to' guy, was known as a mentor, and knew the ins and outs of the history of MERCK.
Alan's memberships included:
- Borough of Bay Head Fire Department, joining July 1976 and receiving Certificate of Exemption in December 1983. He received a Membership Qualifying Certificate in December 1983, recorded with the New Jersey State Fireman's Association as a member of the Bay Head's Fireman's Relief Association.
- MERCK Fire Department of Rahway. He also supported the MERCK Ambulance Corp.
- National Association of Scientific Materials Managers, New Jersey Society of Fire Service Instructors, Woodstock Fire Department of Woodstock, Vt., Vermont State Firefighters' Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Of The United States, Post 681,
- Town of Woodstock Developmental Review Board. Began in 2004, with term expiring in March 2011.
Alan is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann [Laiuppa], whom he married Sept. 27, 2005, in Woodstock. Alan was never a biological father - however, he was a stepfather to five children: Bjorn Cristen Peterson, of North Brookfield, Mass.; Jalen Cristen Peterson, of Woodstock; Anilese Cristen Peterson, of Woodstock; Janel Sprague, of Bricktown; and Joni Cook, of Point Pleasant. He is also survived by two sisters: Judy Palumbo, of Matthews, N.C.; and Sandra Wyckoff, of St. Petersburg, Fla.
In addition to his parents, Alan is predeceased by his first wife, Arlene [Hickswa].
Memorial donations may be made to the Woodstock Fireman's Relief Fund, 454 Woodstock Road, Woodstock, Vt., 05091.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, Vt.
