Ruth F. Deegan, 71
Former Secretary At Family Investors, Inc. in Fanwood
Ruth F. Ryan Deegan, 71, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at home.
Born and raised in Bayridge, Brooklyn, she lived in Scotch Plains for the last 39 years.
Mrs. Deegan was an executive secretary with CIT Group, Factoring Division in New York City for 12 years before retiring in 1990.
Prior to that, she had been an executive secretary at Family Investors, Inc. in Fanwood for many years.
She was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, John J. Deegan, Sr., in 1972.
Surviving are three sons, John J. Deegan, Jr. and Timothy Deegan, both of Scotch Plains and Michael Deegan of Rantoul, Kan.; a daughter, Jacquelyn Lortie of Gorham, Me.; two sisters, Grace Mohr and Doris Poling, both of Breezie Point, N.Y., and 11 grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy was held on Saturday, October 16, at Immaculate Heart Church.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Donations may be made to the Center For Hope Hospice, 176 Hussa Street, Linden, 07036.

Richard Carlson, 78
Was Navy Veteran; Office Manager for County Prosecutor
Richard Carlson, 78, of Elizabeth died on Friday, October 15, 1999 in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Scotch Plains for 20 years before moving back to Elizabeth.
Mr. Carlson was an office manager for the Union County Prosecutor’s Office in Elizabeth for six years.
Prior to that, he had owned the Richard J. Carlson Insurance Agency in Elizabeth for 12 years and was the insurance manager of R. E. Scott Company in Westfield for 25 years.
He was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of New Jersey and the Insurance Advisory Committee of Union County and Elizabeth.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and served as a petty officer aboard the USS Cobia submarine. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cranford Post and the USS Cobia Veterans Association.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Denton Palmer; a son, R. Jeffrey Carlson; a daughter, Janet C. Carlson; a stepson, David R. Palmer; a sister,
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, October 18, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Cranford.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.

Carmen DeCato, 77
Financial Consultant For United Daniels Company in New York
Carmen M. DeCato, 77, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., died on Thursday, October 14, 1999 in East Stroudsburg.
Born in Paterson, he had lived in Newark, Fanwood and Cranford before moving to East Stroudsburg 13 years ago.
Mr. DeCato was a financial principal consultant for the United Daniels Company in New York City. Prior to that, he had been a financial principal for the Pressman, Frohelich and Frost stock brokerage firm and for Northfield Investments.
He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran and served as a staff sergeant during World War II.
He graduated from Tri-State University in Angola, Ind.
Mr. DeCato was Treasurer of the Gran Centurians and a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2602.
Surviving are his wife, Stefani DeCato; a son, Michael DeCato; a daughter, Suzanne Fordham; a sister, Rose How, and a grandchild. Helen Koerner, and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 19, at the Leonard Home for Funerals in Elizabeth.

Ralph Monte, Sr., 71
Army Veteran; Was Known for Portrait Paintings
Ralph Monte, Sr., 71, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, October 15, 1999 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Queens, he had lived in Rahway for 35 years before moving to Scotch Plains nine years ago.
Mr. Monte had been a parts man with Quality Auto Body in Rahway for 10 years, retiring in 1992.
Prior to that, he had worked for Hoffman Equipment in Highland Park for eight years and for Caterpillar in Mountainside for 20 years.
He served in the United States Army during peacetime as a medic in Japan.
He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 825 in Newark.
Mr. Monte was a well-known painter in the Union County area, specializing in portraits of people and pets.
Surviving are two sons, Ralph Monte, Jr. and Thomas Monte; a daughter, Teresa Hamel; a brother, Joseph Monte; two sisters, Theresa Whalen and Winifred Breslawski, and seven grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Monday, October 18, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Rahway, following the funeral from the Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home, also in Rahway.
Interment was at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.

Angela M. Meister, 89
Bookkeeper; Active With Area Church Groups
Angela M. Meister, 89, of New Providence died on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 in Glenside Nursing Home in New Providence.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Vailsburg, Union and Mountainside before moving to New Providence a year ago.
Miss Meister had been a bookkeeper for Kenny Press in Newark before retiring in 1974.
She was a member of the Rosary Society of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Vailsburg and a member of the Court Immaculate Heart of Mary Council No. 1360 Catholic Daughters of America in Union.
She was also a member of the Benedictine Mother’s League of St. Abbey in Morristown and the senior citizens of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Union.
Surviving is a sister, Gertrude E. Meister.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, October 16, in St. Michael’s Church following the funeral from the Haeberle & Barth Colonial Home in Union.

Alice W. Salvato
Alice Weidenbacher Salvato of Madison, Conn., previously of Westfield and Brick, died on Tuesday, October 12, 1999.
Mrs. Salvato was active in the Westfield Garden Club and The Children’s Specialized Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Mountainside Presbyterian Church and a long-time member of the church choir.
She was predeceased by a brother, Ken Richter, and two sisters, Katherine Spalding and Jean Berry.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Salvato; two daughters, Sally Scott Stedman of Guilford, Conn. and Nancy Boyd of Waterford, Mich.; a son, Drew Weidenbacher of Bellingham, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, October 17, at Mountainside Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Guilford Funeral Home in Guilford, Conn.
Donations may be made to The Children’s Specialized Hospital, New Providence Road, Mountainside, 07090.

Zachary E. Feldman, 15
Zachary Evan Feldman, 15, of Westfield died on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Rahway Hospital in Rahway.
Born in Staten Island, he lived in Somerset before moving to Westfield 11 years ago.
Zachary was a student at The ECLC School in Chatham. He was active with the Gateway Social Group in Summit.
Surviving are his parents, Robert H. and Diane M. Feldman; a brother, Benjamin E. Feldman; a sister, Allison J. Feldman, and his paternal grandparents, Florence and Abner Feldman of Manhattan, N.Y.
A Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 15, at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield. Burial was at The Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.
Donations may be made to The ECLC School, Lum Street, Chatham, 07928.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.
