Stock Clerk; Active in African Methodist Church
Romeles Boston, 70, of Plainfield died Saturday, April 24, 1999 at home.
He was born in Lamar, South Carolina, and had lived in Westfield before moving to Plainfield 39 years ago.
Mr. Boston was a stock clerk for Mayfair-Foodtown supermarket in Plainfield for 32 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Plainfield, where he was a trustee, usher and a member of the men’s club and the men’s choir.
Surviving are his wife, Blossom Deloris Boston; three sons, Rondia White, of Paramount, California, Eric Boston, of Plainfield and Frederick Boston, of Somerset; a daughter, Denise Boston-Jordan of Plainfield; four brothers, Bennie Boston of Greensboro, North Carolina, Samuel Boston of Lamar, South Carolina, Calvin Boston of Newport News, Virginia and Willie Rainey, of Chicago; five sisters, Hattie B. Samuels and Bernice Byrd, both of Timmonsville, South Carolina, Margaret Jackson, of New York City, Virginia Gilbert and Corine Price, both of Lamar, South Carolina, and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, April 28, at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Plainfield.
Arrangements were handled by Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Fund of New Jersey, 1034 Salem Road, Union, 07083.

Steven L. Lapidus, 39
Active Crusader For First Amendment Rights of Reporters
Steven L. Lapidus, 39, of Westfield died on Wednesday, February 17, 1999 following complications from surgery.
Born in Syracuse, New York, he had lived in Scotch Plains before relocating to Westfield. Mr. Lapidus was a partner in the Newark law firm of Robinson, Lapidus and Livelli. He and Donald Robinson established the business in 1996 after splitting off from the New Jersey firm of Robinson, Wayne and LaSala, where Mr. Lapidus had served as a general litigation associate.
An alumnus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Mr. Lapidus earned his law degree from Fordham University in The Bronx in 1984. He was a member of the Fordham Law Review.
He clerked for Judge John F. Keenan, a senior judge for the Southern District of New York, and was admitted to both the New Jersey and New York Bar Associations in 1985. He worked for a time at the firm of Simpson Thatcher in New York.
Mr. Lapidus, who specialized in cases involving libel and First Amendment rights, was known as a champion of journalists’ right to public records. He recently challenged the State Police for access by reporters to arrest records.
He represented The Star Ledger in many cases involving access to information, and also did work on behalf of the Trenton Times and the Jersey Journal.
Mr. Lapidus was a volunteer and coach for the Westfield Youth Soccer, Basketball and Baseball leagues, and was Co-Chairman of the Fresh Air Fund.
He was predeceased by his father, Bernard Lapidus.
Surviving are his wife, Ginger L. Hardwick, Vice President of the Westfield Board of Education and the daughter of former State Assembly Speaker Chuck Hardwick; two sons, Jacob Lapidus and Benjamin Lapidus; a daughter, Sarah Lapidus, all of Westfield; his mother and stepfather, Anne Lapidus and Stuart Garfinkle of the Syracuse area, and two sisters, Karen Burwick of Syracuse and Barbara Lapidus of Niskayuna, New York.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 19, at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Steven Lapidus Scholarship Fund in care of the Westfield Foundation, 301 North Avenue, West, Westfield, 07090.

Henry Kapmeyer, 66
Air Force Veteran; Was Recruiter for Frontier Systems, Inc.
Henry E. Kapmeyer, 66, of Plainfield died on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in New York, he had lived in Maplewood and in Fanwood before moving to Plainfield.
Mr. Kapmeyer had been a recruiter for Frontier Systems, Inc. in Edison for many years before retiring.
He was a United States Air Force veteran who served during peace-time and later as a Captain in the Korean Conflict.
He graduated from Fordham University in The Bronx with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Surviving is his wife, Elizabeth Kapmeyer.
Services were held on Saturday, February 20, in the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Mary Graves, 61
Active In Church; Was Packer For Lermer Plastic Corp.
Mary A. Graves, 61, of Plainfield died on Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at John Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Marion, South Carolina, she had lived in Plainfield for 25 years.
Mrs. Graves was a packer at Lermer Plastic Corporation in Garwood for 12 years.
She was a member of the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Plainfield, and was active with its choir, the Steward Board, the Flower Club and the Kitchen Committee.
She was predeceased by her husband, John L. Graves, in 1996.
Surviving are two sons, John D. Graves and Tony A. Graves, both of Plainfield; four daughters, Angelenia C. Graves of Newark, and Melissa A. Mason, Sherri A. Allen and Hortensia Graves, all of Plainfield; a brother, James L. Williams of Scotch Plains; a sister, Maggie L. Oxendine of Maplewood, and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 19, at the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Herbert Verse, Sr., 86
Herbert F. Verse, Sr., 86, of Orlando, Florida died on Saturday, February 13, 1999.
Born in Larchmont, New York, he had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Central Florida in 1980.
Mr. Verse was a Mason and Past President of the Plainfield Kiwanis.
Surviving are three sons, Robert Verse of Island Heights, Roger Verse of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Herbert Verse, Jr. of San Francisco; two brothers, Fred Verse of Rochester Hills, Michigan and Walter Verse of Manahawkin; three sisters, Dorothy Dolby of Chattom, Ontario, Canada, Mildred Varnar of Cornelius, North Carolina, and Martha Getz of Dunellen, and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 20, at the Island Heights First Methodist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Baldwin-Fairchild-Oakland Park Cemetery and Funeral Home in Lake Mary, Florida.

Iris Sherman, 58
Iris Sherman, 58, of Westfield died on Thursday, February 18, 1999 at home.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Westfield for the past 20 years.
Mrs. Sherman was a supervisor in the customer service department of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Somerset for 10 years.
She had graduated Brooklyn College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Childhood Education.
Surviving are her husband, Jerome Sherman; a daughter, Amy Gotsch of Summit; a son, Douglas Sherman of Westfield; her parents, Sylvia and Abraham Halkin of Queens, New York; a sister, Linda Goldsmith; and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 19, at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Alice A. Price, 57
Alice A. Price, 57, of Mountainside died on Friday, February 19, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Staten Island, she lived in Mountainside for the past 20 years.
Mrs. Price was a member of the school board for Our Lady of Lourdes School in Mountainside.
She graduated in 1962 from St. Vincent’s Hospital Nursing School in New York City.
Surviving are her husband, James E. Price; two sons, James Price and Michael Price; two daughters, Kathleen Colline and Jennifer Lynch, and two grandchildren.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, February 24, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.

William Brown, 65
Research Biologist; Was Professor at Essex County College
William Brown, 65, a lifelong resident of Westfield, died on Saturday, February 13, 1999 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair.
Mr. Brown was a research biologist and chemist at Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals in Summit and later became a senior technical specialist in the Oncology Department at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in The Bronx.
He was a professor/adjunct staff member at Essex County College.
He was a member of the American Society for Microbiology, the American Chemical Society and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
A graduate of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Mr. Brown completed graduate work at the Rutgers University Institute of Microbiology.
He was a United States Army veteran from 1957 to 1959, serving as a chemical laboratory specialist at the Army Biological Warfare Laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland.
Surviving are a son, William Brown, Jr.; four brothers, Charles H. Brown, James Brown, Douglas Brown and Lawrence Wallace Brown, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 19, at St. Luke’s African Methodist Episcopal Church in Newark.
Arrangements were handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.
