Dr. Charles Nadel, 93
Introduced Techniques for Scoliosis Treatment
Dr. Charles Nadel, 93, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, January 3, 2000 at home.
Born in Carteret, he had lived in Irvington and Summit before moving to Scotch Plains six months ago.
An orthopedist for more than 50 years, Dr. Nadel had been head of the Orthopedic Department and President of the medical and dental staffs at Irvington General Hospital.
He also had been the Medical Director of the Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center of Newark, West Essex and Belleville and of the United Cerebral Palsy League of Union County.
Dr. Nadel was an orthopedic consultant and had served as the interim medical director at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.
He was one of the founders of the Cheshire Home in Florham Park for disabled adults seeking to live independently, and also of the Cerebral Palsy Center of Essex and West Hudson Counties.
He had also been President of the medical staff at the Hospital Center of Orange.
Dr. Nadel introduced surgery and the use of the Harrington Brace Technique throughout New Jersey to treat scoliosis.
He was also instrumental in having a law passed mandating early scoliosis screening in New Jersey schools.
He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Children’s Specialized Hospital and the Cheshire Home.
He was a charter member of the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation and a founder of the Scoliosis Clinic at the Hospital Center in Orange.
Dr. Nadel served on the executive committees of the Council of Social Agencies of Newark, Irvington and West Hudson.
He was a member of the New Jersey Rose Society and the Irvington Historical Society.
In addition, he was President of the Irvington Chamber of Commerce and the Vice President of the United Appeal and Red Cross.
He graduated in 1928 from the University of Pennsylvania and earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1932.
Dr. Nadel was active with the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Club of Northern New Jersey, serving as its President in 1962.
He was founder and Chairman of the Committee for Good Government and was President of the Kiwanis Club of Irvington.
He received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Irvington Chamber of Commerce and the Award of Good Merit from Jersey City State College.
Dr. Nadel served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Greenberg; a son, Dr. William R. Nadel; a sister, Hannah Lasner, and four grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, January 8, in St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church in Summit.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Brough Funeral Home in Summit.

Mark Sobel, 47
Mark Sobel, 47, of North Plainfield died on Saturday, January 8, 2000 while on ski patrol at Hunter Mountain in Hunter, N.Y.
Born in Toronto, Canada, he had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to North Plainfield 17 years ago.
Mr. Sobel was a telecommunications technician and installer with Entel Systems of Somerset.
He was active with the North Plainfield Recreation Commission and was a coach in the baseball and soccer leagues in that community for many years.
He was a volunteer with the ski patrol at Hunter Mountain.
Mr. Sobel attended Missouri Valley College and the Cittone Institute in Edison.
Surviving are his wife, Beth M. Sobel; a son, Shawn J. Sobel; a daughter, Casey M. Sobel; his parents, Herbert and Shirley Sobel; three brothers, Aaron Sobel, Max Sobel and Leslie Sobel, and a sister, Melissa Sobel.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, January 13, in the Mundy Funeral Home in Dunellen.

Eleanor Repetti
Retired Bookeeper; Volunteer With Cancer Foundation
Eleanor M. Repetti of Westfield died on Sunday, January 9, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in New York City, Mrs. Repetti had lived in Astoria, Queens, the Bronx and Orange before moving to Westfield.
Mrs. Repetti had been a data processor and bookkeeper with the Orange Water Department for 15 years before retiring in 1988.
She had previously worked as a service representative for RCA in Harrison.
After her retirement, she served as a volunteer and employee for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, a children’s cancer foundation in Essex County.
Surviving are two sons, Peter Repetti and Thomas Repetti; a daughter, Patricia Ladell, and five grandchildren.
A Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, January 13, in St. Anthony of Padua Chapel, 1360 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange, following the funeral from the Codey Funeral Home in Orange.

Mary Yaros, 87
Mary Yaros, 87, of Fanwood died on Monday, January 10, 2000 in the Holmdel Health Care Center in Holmdel.
Born in Graceton, Pa., Mrs. Yaros moved to Fanwood many years ago.
She was a volunteer worker at St. Bartholomew the Apostle School and a member of the Rosary Altar Society of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, both of Scotch Plains.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Yaros; a daughter, Mary Jane Warshaw; three sisters, Anne Mortola, Therese Stellmah and Virginia Fisher, and three grandchildren.
A Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, January 14, in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Edmond Ferguson, 80
Edmond Ferguson, 80, of Fanwood died on Monday, January 10, 2000 in the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he had lived in Westfield before moving to Fanwood 32 years ago.
Mr. Ferguson had worked in the payroll department of Mack Trucks in Green Brook for many years, retiring in 1985.
After retiring, he worked at the Datebook Shop, a family-owned card and gift store in Old Bridge.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Mr. Ferguson was a member of the Watchung Ski Club.
Surviving is his wife, Arline Ferguson.
Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, January 12, at the Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home in Clark.

Patricia N. Williams, 43
Patricia N. “Teesha” Williams, 43, died on Thursday, January 6, 2000 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.
Surviving are her daughter, NiNicka Williams of Scotch Plains; two brothers, Charles D. Karpel of Scotch Plains and George Williams of Hillsborough, and a granddaughter.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, January 13, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield, followed by interment at Hillside Cemetery of Samptown, South Plainfield.
Visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Clingen, 38
Elizabeth Maria Clingen, 38, of Westfield died on Friday, January 7, 2000 at home.
Born in Morristown, she had lived in Summit for most of her life before moving to Westfield three months ago.
Miss Clingen graduated from New York University in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
She was active in programs at the Calvary Church in Summit for many years.
Surviving are her father, James F. Clingen, and a brother, James Guion Clingen.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, January 13, Hillside Cemetery in Plainfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dangler Funeral Home in Summit.

William J. Solosy, 75
Army Veteran; Had Worked for Bristol-Myers-Squibb
William Joseph Solosy, 75, of Mountainside died on Thursday, January 6, 2000 in Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Hillside before moving to Mountainside 40 years ago.
Mr. Solosy had been employed by the Bristol-Myers-Squibb Company in Hillside for 39 years before retiring as a maintenance supervisor in 1982.
He served in the United States Army during World War II as a technician fifth grade.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Solosy; a son, William Solosy, Jr.; two sisters, Mary Amberg and Margaret Bracher, and a grandchild.
A Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, January 13, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
