Edward Miller
Set Up Civil Service; Was Local Public Works Employee
Edward A. Miller, 84, of Scotch Plains, died Sunday, November 15, 1998 at home.
Born in Leetes Island, Connecticut, he had lived in Elizabeth prior to moving to Scotch Plains in the 1950s.
Mr. Miller had worked for the Scotch Plains Department of Public Works for 24 years prior to retiring in 1978.
He was active in instituting the civil service in Scotch Plains.
He was a direct descendant of General George Brinton McClellan, general in chief of the Union Army during the Civil War.
In his youth, he was an active member of Boy Scout Troop No. 13.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elena Blanche Miller, in 1979.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held today, Thursday, November 19, at 10 a.m. at Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, preceded by a 9 a.m. visitation.

Sarah L. Fowler, 60
Arc Bus Aide In Plainfield; Grandmother of 24
Sarah L. Fowler, 60, a lifelong resident of Plainfield, died on Saturday, August 14, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Mrs. Fowler was a bus aide for the Plainfield Arc.
She was a lifelong member of the Refuge Church of Christ in Plainfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rudolph Fowler, Sr., on July 7, and by her brother, the Reverend David S. Fowler, Sr.
Surviving are seven sons, Rudolph Fowler, Jr., Isaiah Fowler, Richard Fowler, David Scott Fowler and Jeffrey Fowler, all of Plainfield, Sherman Fowler of East Orange and Parrell Stewart of Huntsville, Tex.; five daughters, Edna Mae Jones, Charlene Jones, Elaine Fowler, Deborah Fowler and Mahaia Stewart, all of Plainfield; three sisters, Tyre Provard of Columbia, S. C., Jay Ny Stewart of Piscataway and Elizabeth Jasper of Plainfield; four brothers, Andrew Fowler and Deacon Benjamin Fowler, both of Plainfield, the Reverend Willie Fowler of Scotch Plains and Cal Fowler of Camden, S. C.; 24 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 21, at the Refuge Church of Christ.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Mario DeLauro, 72
Retired Detective In New York City; Army Sergeant
Mario DeLauro, 72, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, August 17, 1999 at home.
Born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, he had lived in Staten Island before moving to Scotch Plains five years ago.
Mr. DeLauro had been a New York City detective for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He worked for the past 19 years as a security specialist for New York Off-Track Betting.
He served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) of the New York City Police Department, and was a PBA delegate and Vice President of the New York Police Department Columbian Association.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Anne DeLauro; a son, Christopher DeLauro; two brothers, Pasquale DeLauro and Jerry DeLauro; two sisters, Jean Allback and Louise Realmuto, and three grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, August 21, at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Clark.
Arrangements were handled by the Krowicki-Gorny Memorial Home in Clark.

Anne Weissman, 89
Anne Weissman, 89, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, August 16, 1999 at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Jersey City before moving to Scotch Plains many years ago.
Mrs. Weissman was a member of the Hadassah in Jersey City.
Surviving is a brother, Leon Pollak of Clark.
Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, August 18, in the Bernheim-Apter-Goldsticker Suburban Funeral Home in Maplewood.

Matthew Barbosa, Jr., 63
Was Owner Of Towing Service and Auto Body
Matthew Barbosa, Jr., 63, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, August 18, 1999 in Community Medical Center in Toms River.
Born in Newark, he lived in Clark before moving to Scotch Plains 26 years ago.
He also maintained a summer residence in Seaside Park.
Mr. Barbosa was the founder and owner of Matty's Towing Service and MDS Auto Body, both in Newark.
He founded Matty's Towing in 1964 and retired from that business in 1980.
He founded MDS in 1975 and retired in May of this year.
He had served in the United States Army during peacetime.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Adele Fazio Barbosa; two sons, Matthew J. Barbosa, 3rd of Bridgewater and Anthony Barbosa of Westfield; a daughter, Jennifer Barbosa Murphy of Berkeley Heights, and three grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, August 23, in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
Donations may be made to "Save Barnegat Bay, " 906 B Grand Central Avenue, Lavallette, 08735.

Mary F. Flammia, 83
Mary F. Flammia, 83, of Toms River died on Thursday, August 19, 1999 at Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River.
Born in Newark, she had lived there before moving to Toms River 24 years ago.
Mrs. Flammia had been a floor lady with Conmair Corporation in Newark for 15 years before retiring in 1970.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas R. Flammia, in 1989.
Surviving are her brother, Walter S. Majewski of Scotch Plains, and her sister, Stella Benn of Kearny.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, August 21, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, following the funeral from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment was held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Susan Nye Vernon, 61
Hospice Volunteer; Was Scientist at Naval Weapons Center
Susan Nye Vernon, 61, of Annandale, Va. died on Saturday, August 14, 1999 at the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
Born in Westfield, she had traveled with her husband, retired Army Colonel Graham D. Vernon, to postings in the United States, Europe and the Soviet Union while he was on active duty. They settled in Annandale in 1974.
Mrs. Vernon worked for the past four years at Amron Corporation in Mclean, Va., where she tested metals and composite materials.
From 1985 to the early 1990s, she had been a scientist at the Naval Surface Weapons Center at White Oak, Va.
During the 1960s, she had been employed at Bell Labs in New Jersey and Lincoln Labs in Boston.
She held patents in her field as well as in medical devices.
A 1955 graduate of Westfield High School, Mrs. Vernon graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland in 1959, and later earned a master's degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
While living in Moscow, she organized a group of Embassy wives to assist United States tourists who were hospitalized in the Soviet Union.
She was a volunteer at the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Terese McCoy of Seattle, Wash. and Jean Bechtel of Mechanicsbury, Pa.; her mother, Jean Nye of Westfield; a sister, Deborah Nye of New York City, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 7, at 1 p.m. at Fort Myer Post Chapel in Arlington, Va.
Private interment was to be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Everly Funeral Home in Fairfax, Virginia.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia, P. O. Box 922, Falls Church, Va., 22040.

Henry Wilewski, 88
Electrical Engineer At Firm in Long Island for 10 Years
Henry M. Wilewski, 88, of Mountainside, died on Monday, August 23, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Wilmington, Del., he had lived in Mountainside for the last 50 years.
Mr. Wilewski was an electrical engineer with the Grumman Aircraft Corporation in Bethpage, Long Island for 10 years before retiring in 1970.
He was a 1935 graduate of the Newark College of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical engineering.
In 1941, he received his Master's Degree from Stevens Institute in Hoboken and in 1946 he graduated from the Poly Tech Institute in Brooklyn, New York.
He was a former member of Azure Lodge No. 129 Free and Accepted Masons of Cranford.
Surviving are his wife, Adele Walega Wilewski; a son, Henry J. Wilewski of Fairfax Station, Va., and a granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday, August 25, at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Irvington.
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
