Mary A. Stevenson

Mrs. Stevenson, 55, of Middletown, died Feb. 20 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Bergenfield, she resided in Middletown the past 30 years. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was predeceased by her father, Michael Spaulding. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Donald Stevenson; her mother, Ellen Daly Spaulding; three daughters, Mary Ellen Stevenson of Eatontown, Michele Stevenson of Middletown, and Melissa Stevenson of Red Bank; two brothers, Bernie Spaulding of Northglenn, Colo., and Michael Spaulding of Payson, Ariz.; a sister, Ellen Taylor of Hellertown, Pa.; and a grandson. Visitation will be Feb. 23 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral gathering will be Feb. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.

Edith M. “Edie” Santoro

Mrs. Santoro, 93, of Little Silver, died Feb. 11 in Red Bank. Born in Newark, she resided in Little Silver since 1950. She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Santoro in 1980; a son, Robert T. Santoro in 2004; and 13 older brothers and sisters. She is survived by a son, Donald Santoro of Red Bank; a daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Donald MacLaughlin of Little Silver; a daughter-in-law, Janice Santoro of Kingston, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Memorial donations may be made to Casa de Sara, P.O. Box 30306, Knoxville TN 37930-0306.

Elizabeth L. Smith

Mrs. Smith, 78, of Shrewsbury, died Feb. 18 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She had been a resident of Shrewsbury for the past 53 years. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She was a member of the Shrewsbury Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Howard Smith, in January; and a sister, Jayne VanLenten, in 2004. Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline S. McQueen of Westminster, S.C.; a son, Kenneth W. Smith of Sebring, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Bill VanLenten of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.

Elsie R. Cole Vee

Mrs. Vee, of Parlin, died Feb. 15 at home. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Parlin the past 49 years. She was a telephone operator and assistant supervisor of communication at Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, the past 40 years. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victories Roman Catholic Church, Sayreville. She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Cole. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John F. Vee; a son and daughter-in-law, John F. and Noreen Vee Jr. of South Amboy; a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Kenneth Leon of Sayreville; a brother, Marvin Cole of Pennsylvania; a sister, Frances Rooney of Little Silver; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be Feb. 18 at 8:45 a.m. at Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victories Church. Entombment will be at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens.

Dorothy Yost Slocum

Mrs. Slocum, 83, of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet, died Feb. 15 at Ocean County Medical Center, Brick. Born in Mahanoy City, Pa., she resided in Rumson prior to moving to West Keansburg. She was a store manager at Ward-Bond Bakery Company, Middletown, for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Rumson Auxiliary Fire Company, and several seniors groups. She was predeceased by her first husband, Thomas Taylor; her second husband, John Slocum; a stepson, Jack Slocum; and a brother, Lester Yost. She is survived by three daughters, Beverly Daly of West Keansburg, Joyce Doner of Kearny, and Dorothy Puca of Escondido, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Sue Hasa of Bricktown; a stepson, Brian Slocum of Florida; a sister, Florence O’Brinski of Kearny; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Interment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.

Robert Leslie Dalton Jr.

Mr. Dalton, 81, of Middletown, died Feb. 5 at home. He resided in Boston prior to moving to Middletown. He was a co-founder of and salesman at the brokerage firm of Dalton Associates. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was instrumental in helping establish St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Carol Ann O’Connell Dalton in 2003. He is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Dalton of Little Silver, Peter Dalton of Philadelphia, and Gregory Dalton of Middletown; three daughters, Leslie Duffy of Acton, Mass., Sara Dalton of Somerville, Mass., and Julia Dalton of New York City; and seven grandchildren.

Louis J. Tumia

Mr. Tumia, 86, of Red Bank, died Feb. 6 at King James Care Center, Middletown. He resided in the Lincroft section of Middletown for 15 years, prior to moving to Red Bank 26 years ago. He was the retired vice president of Rodenstock Optical Company, Puerto Rico. Prior to that, he was employed at Shuron Optical, Rochester, N.Y., and Victor Optical, Newark. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 2113, Florida. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice M. Feola Tumia in 2004. He is survived by a son, Kenneth Tumia of Red Bank; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Ann and Leonard Bzdewka of Hazlet, and Mary Lou and Howard Gittleson of Rumson; two brothers, Samuel and James Tumia, both Rochester, N.Y.; four sisters, Angelina Coleman Mickey DePasqale, and Rose Tkac, all of Rochester, and Mary Cermola of Webster, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Francisco Scalco

Mr. Scalco, 81, of Shadow Lake Village, River Plaza section of Middletown, died Jan. 21 at home. He resided in Pemberton prior to moving to River Plaza eight years ago. He served with the U.S. Army for 22 years, retiring from Fort Dix. He served with the 8th Army Air Corps during World War II, and re enlisted in the U.S. Army and serving with the Infantry Division. his medals included the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, and several Good Conduct Medals. Prior to that, he was employed at 20th Century Fox, Hollywood. He was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Adelheid “Heidi”; a daughter. Linda Scalco of Fair Haven; a brother, Humberto Scalco of Miami; and one grandson. Interment was at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.

Alexandra “Sandy” Torra

Mrs. Torra, 67, of Middletown, died Jan. 18 at home. Born in Russia, she relocated to the United States, and resided in Middletown since 1951. She and her husband co-owned Monmouth Street Chevron, Red Bank, for 43 years. She was a member and past church warden of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Red Bank. She was a life member of the River Plaza Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary for the Middletown Township Fire Department. She enjoyed gardening, boating, and helping with the preservation of her church. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Frank Torra; two daughters, Veronica “Ronnie” Torra and Alexandra “Sandy” Torra, both Middletown; a brother, Nicholas Doroschenko of the Fords section of Woodbridge; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert M. Carvalho of Malibu, Calif., and Richard Torra of Santa Ynez, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Torra Lesher of Solvang, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Memorial donations may be made to St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 15-17 Pearl St., Red Bank 07701.

Aldo Alfred Leone

Mr. Leone, 68, of Rumson, died Jan. 19 at home. He resided in Englewood prior to moving to Rumson 33 years ago. He was the owner operator of American Mortgage Acceptance LLC, Bricktown. He was a communicant of Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven, where he was also a cantor and member of the choir. A classical and opera singer, he had performed at Carnegie Hall, New York City; Count Basie, Red Bank and other opera venues. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fair Haven, and Arcadian Chorale, Matawan. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ellen Nicholas Leone; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Victoria Leone of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Robert Fania of Princeton Junction, and Olivia and Frank Nagy of Eatontown; a brother, Stephan Leone of Toms River; a sister, Maria Incremona of Red Bank; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Church of the Nativity. Entombment was at St. Gabriel’s cemetery Mausoleum, Marlboro. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.
