U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

William E. Newsome Sr.
Wellsville, NY
William E. Newsome Sr., 67, of 2495 Lewis Rd., passed away on July 9, 2003 at his home. He was born on June 25, 1936 in Pikesville, KY the son of Floyd and Molly (Cauldwell) Newsome. On November 19, 1994 he married Patricia Kirk in Elkton, MD who survives.
William was formerly of Conowingo, MD and had lived in Wellsville since June of 2001. He owned and operated an excavating business from 1969 until 1999 when he retired to farming.
Surviving besides his wife are 6 children; Janet Marie (Richard) Brewer of Rising Sun, MD, William E. Newsome Jr. of Rising Sun MD, Joseph Andrew (Ellie Mae) Newsome of Conowingo, MD, Deborah Anne Newsome, Diane Rose Newsome, and David Michael Newsome all at home. Also 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Draxie Reynolds of Penny KY, Susie Jennings of Holtwood, PA, and 1 brother; Wade Newsome of Wellsville as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday July 12, from 11:00 till 12 noon at J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. The funeral service will be at 12 noon at the funeral home, with Rev. Mason Sorensen presiding. Burial will be in the Newsome Family Cemetery in Wellsville. Memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society.

William Edward Austin
Coyle, Oklahoma
William Edward Austin, age 72, of 814 S. Cottingham Street, died August 26, 2003 unexpectedly at home. He was born December 11, 1930 in Wellsville, N,Y. the son of William and Mary (Williams) Austin. Bill was a 1948 graduate of Wellsville High School, He then served with the U. S, Navy for 4 years, he later entered Oklahoma State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught on Rochester, N. Y. for 10 years before moving to Oklahoma, where he was a science teacher at Coyle High School until he retired in 1993. He coached Basketball and track throughout his career, He was an active member of and had served as a eucheristic minister and C.C.D. teacher. At the time of his death he was the Mayor of Coyle, OK. and had served in that capacity for the past 17 years.
He is survived by 2 sisters, Marlyn Dodge of Temecula, CA, Sylvia Tortora of Rochester, N. Y., a sister in law, Joanne Austin of Wellsville, N. Y. and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Blaine Austin in 1994.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday August 30, 2003 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 34 W. State Street in Wellsville, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 36 Maple Avenue in Wellsville. Rev. Rupert Arulvalan will be the Celebrant. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville, and memorial suggestions include the American Heart Association.

WILLIAM WENTWORTH NAGLE
Wellsville, NY
WILLIAM WENTWORTH NAGLE, 81, of 251 N. Main Street, passed away at home on Thursday April 22, 2004. He was born July 13, 1922 in Wellsville, the son of William Joseph and Irene (Wentworth) Nagle. On October 15, 1947 in Bolivar he married Maureen Dougherty who survives.
Bill was a 1939 graduate of Bolivar High School, a decorated veteran of WW II serving with the US Navy as a TM2C Torpedo Man 2nd Class on the A. W. Grant a DD649 Destroyer. He later attended Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. He was formerly employed by E. I. Dupont in Bradford, PA as a shooter and later by John C. Bradley Oil Producer. In June of 1950 he began his career with the United States Postal Service in Bolivar where he was named Postmaster on March 29, 1975. He became Postmaster in Wellsville on February 12, 1977 and retired August 29, 1980.
He was a member of the Wellsville Elks Lodge # 1495 in Wellsville, the Emerald Hook and Ladder Company # 3 in Wellsville, was a life member of the Bolivar Fire Department, life member of the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW Wellsville, Member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post # 772 in Bolivar, Past Allegany County Commander of the American Legion, the Morrison Hayes Post # 702 Sons of American Legion in Wellsville, the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville and was a Past President of the St. Mary’s Church Altar & Rosary Society in Bolivar.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 4 daughters, Crelly Ann Nagle of Atlanta, GA, Mary John Nagle of Buffalo, Deirdre (Thomas) McElroy of Port Royal, PA and Maureen (Gary) Pickett of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.
There will be no prior visitation, a Memorial Mass and interment with military honors in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar will be scheduled for a later date. Memorial suggestions include the Emerald Hook & Ladder Company # 3 in Wellsville or Home Care & Hospice.

TESSA ANNE SPICER
Allentown, NY
TESSA ANNE SPICER was stillborn on April 23, 2004 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Gypsy (Cornelius) Spicer.
She is survived by 2 sisters: Logan Spicer and Madilynne Spicer at home, A maternal grandmother: Sherry Lafferty of Allentown, a maternal great-grandfather: Edward Cornelius of Wellsville, a maternal great-great-grandmother: Mildred Cornelius of Wellsville, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends are invited to a funeral service on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 4:00 pm in the Yorks Corners Mennonite Church with Rev. Eugene Miller presiding. There will be no prior visitation. Burial will be in the Yorks Corners Cemetery. Memorial suggestions include the SPCA Serving Allegany County and the Allentown Softball League. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc.

Edna L. Fanton
Wellsville, NY
Edna L. Fanton, age 78, of 3227 Riverside Drive, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday July 24, 2003. She was born September 25, 1924 in Andover, NY; the daughter of Leon and Marie (Alvord) Claire. On January 26, 1946 in Andover she married Leaon E. Fanton who survives. Edna was a life long resident of the Wellsville area and was a loving homemaker for her family.
Surviving in addition to her husband are 1 son, Leaon “Bob” (Rebecca) Fanton of Wellsville, 3 granddaughters, Terry (Scott) Dodge of Brooksville, FL., Michelle Fanton and Erica Fanton both of Wellsville. 3 sisters, Ida Bongiva of Kenmore, Charlotte (Robert) Lynch of Wellsville and Irene (Harold) Tiffany of Andover. 2 brothers, Ernest (Beverly) Claire of Wellsville and Phillip Clarke of Andover, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 1 sister, Elizabeth Stanberry and 2 brothers, Louis Claire & Clinton Claire
Friends are invited to call on Monday July 28, 2003 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation at 2:00 pm. in the funeral home, with Rev. Anna Shirey presiding. Interment will be in the Stannards Cemetery and memorial suggestions include any charity of the donor’s choice.

Beulah H. Broughton
Wellsville, NY
Beulah H. Broughton, 77, of 321 Farnum Street, died Saturday January 7, 2006 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. She was born August 17, 1928 in Wellsville the daughter of Herman and Hilda (Vossler) Sick. On July 4, 1953 in Wellsville she married Robert Broughton who survives. Beulah was a graduate of WellsvilleHigh School, was formerly employed at Reuning’s Bakery in Wellsville and was a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Company in Wellsville. She was also employed at One Hour Martinizing in Horseheads where she resided for 17 years prior to moving back to Wellsville in 1977. With her husband she owned & operated the Wellsville Dry Cleaners from 1977 to their retirement in 1996. She was a former member of the TrinityLutheranChurch in Wellsville. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, reading and shopping at yard sales. Surviving in addition to her husband Robert are 2 sons, Bruce (Anne) Broughton of Painted Post, William (Audrey) Broughton of Wellsville, 2 daughters, Bonnie (Richard) Ives of Wellsville, Barbara (Mark) Tolbert of Horseheads, 2 grandchildren, Rebecca (Craig) Player, Richard Ives, 1 great granddaughter, Hailey Player, 2 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, 1 brother, Robert (Rita) Sick of Wellsville and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by 1 grandson, Jeremy Ives, a sister, Dorothy Bacon and a twin brother, Bruce Sick. Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Wednesday January 11th at 2:00 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Eastlack presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial suggestions include any charity of the donor’s choice.

Jakob ”Jake” Mischenko
Wellsville, NY
Jakob ”Jake” Mischenko, age 86, of 21 Lunn Court, entered into peaceful rest early Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on November 2, 1919 in Putyvl’, Ukraine to Jichow and Horpina Mischenko. On May 20, 1941 in Dubrio, Poland he married Jennie Lyack who predeceased him in 1970. He was also married to Peggy Jackson who predeceased him in 1975. He immigrated to the United States with his family on May 30th, 1951 and initially resided in Hornell working as a mechanic. Jake then moved to Wellsville in 1952 and was known as the best tractor mechanic at Chevitte Brothers. He later worked as a layout man and welder at Air Preheater till he retired in 1984. During his retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, visits to the ocean and planting both christmas trees and potatoes at Kent Farms in Andover. He is survived by his son Walter [Dianne] Mischenko of Placentia, CA. and his daughter Helen Taylor of Wellsville; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents of the Ukraine and 3 brothers:Harry and John of the Ukraine and Samuel of Australia Friends are invited to call at the J.W. Embser & Sons F.H. in Wellsville today from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 am in the funeral home with Rev. Dawn Barrett presiding. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery and memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
