BENNETT Martha M. Loving Mother and Grandmother Age 77 of Rumsey Hill Road, Van Etten, NY, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital on Thursday, October 19, 2000. Martha was born in Sayre, PA on August 12, 1923, daughter of the late Ellsworth and Althea (Springstead) Dyer. Survivors include her four sons; John (Sherry) of Van Etten, NY, Henry (Linda), Richard (Janice), Francis Jr. (Linda), all of Erin, NY, her three daughters, Betty (Edgar) Garland, Carol (Rodney) Rose, Linda Merrick and Ray Casselbury all of Van Etten, NY, 18 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Martha was pre-deceased by her husband, Francis Bennett in 1970. She is also pre-deceased by one son, Edward Lewis Bennett and one grandson, Robert Francis Merrick Casselbury. BF Family and friends are invited to call at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home on Sunday, October 22nd from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 23rd at 1PM at the funeral home with Reverend Larry Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. LAUX Gertrude R. Of Gillett, PA Age 89 of RR #3, Gillett, PA, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000 at home. She was born in Sayre, PA, May 11, 1911, the daughter of the late Robert and Bertha Watkins Sutherland. Mrs. Laux was a member of the Pine City Baptist Church and was an X-ray Technician in New Jersey for many years before her retirement. She was predeceased by her husband, Aloysius J. Laux in 1982. MORGAN Donald F. Director of Manufacturing, Reese Products, Elkhart, IN picture here Age 73 of Breesport Rd., Horseheads, formerly of Elkhart, IN and Watkins Rd., Horseheads, after an extended illness on Thursday, October 19, 2000 in the Arnot Ogden Medical Ctr. Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife of over 49 years, Marian (Theetge) Morgan; son and daughter-in-law, Alan & Jamie Morgan of Raleigh, NC; daughter & son-in-law, Diane & Stephen Stange of Prior Lake, MN; grandchildren, Timothy, Michael, Daniel, Emily, and Jonathan Stange, Katie and Shannon Morgan and several nieces and nephews. He was born Mar. 6th 1927 in Addison, NY, the son of the late Forrest and Ruth (Heckman) Morgan. Don was predeceased by his son, David Morgan in 1964; his sister, Virginia Hargrave and brother, Charles Morgan. A member of the First Baptist Church in Elkhart, IN, Don was also a former member of the First Baptist Church in Horseheads. Mr. Morgan served on the Board of Deacons for both churches. A proud veteran of the US Navy, Don had resided on Watkins Rd., until he relocated to Elkhart, IN in 1972. He was employed by Reese Products there until his retirement in 1990. Survived by daughter, Shirley M. Goings, Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Todd (Tammy) Phinney, Rochester, NY, Lamar Goings, Ohio, Michele Goings, Rochester, NY; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Maurice Reynolds, Lakewood, NJ; sister, Mary Reynolds, Tioga, PA. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter G. Phinney and son, Maurice Phinney. She was a communicant of St. James' Episcopal Church, Watkins Glen, having served as Altar Guild, past president of the Women of St. James', Senior Citizens, Home Bureau and B.P.W.; served on the executive board in the Diocese of Rochester, an appointment by the Bishop. While living in Elmira, she was vice president of the Arnot Ogden Auxiliary Board, a member and volunteer of Arnot Ogden Art Museum, past president of Eastside Senior Citizens and Commissioner on the Elmira Housing Authority Board. Rachel received the Chemung County Council of Women's Top Woman of Achievement Award.

BENJAMIN William F. "Benjy" "Bill" Of Lowman, NY Age 65 passed away on Friday, December 1, 2000 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Benjamin was born August 8, 1935 in Elmira, NY, a son of the late John and Marjorie (Whiting) Benjamin. He retired after 42 years of service from Corning Glass as a Gaffer, where he received several outstanding achievement awards. Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elmira, NY. He enjoyed Nascar racing, family geneology and loved to read. Bill was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and a computer buff. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Benjamin is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Lorraine (Gray) Benjamin of Elmira, NY; sons, Michael W. (Nancy) Benjamin of Lowman, NY, James M. (Teresa) Benjamin of Elmira, NY and Joseph L. GROSS Charlotte Peake Formerly of Wellsboro, PA Age 85 passed away Saturday, December 2, 2000 at Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro, PA. Charlotte was born on May 3, 1915 in Webb Mills, NY, the daughter of Erwin W. and Josephine Hegcle Peake. She was a graduate of Charleston High School. She worked as an Inspector for Corning Glass for 26 years and retired in 1971. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Gross, October 9, 1985. She is survived by her step-sons, Morton Gross of Corning, NY, James Gross of Corning, NY, Donald Gross of Sacramento, CA and Robert Gross of Nauvoo, PA; step-daughters, Francis Heichel of Addison, NY and Lelia Ames of Los Angeles, CA; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. RICE Edith Mae Arnot Ogden Hospital Retiree Age 103, formerly of Villa Serene and Horseheads, NY passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2000 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Mrs. Rice was born September 18, 1897 in Springfield, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Cornelius and Alida Wilder Fuller. Edith married her husband, Fred Bailey Rice, who passed away on March 8, 1973. Mrs. Rice was also predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Don Fuller, Roy Fuller, Jim Fuller, and Guy Fuller; her sister, Clara Burnham; her son-in-law, George Dalia, on May 9, 1991 and by her son, Gerald Rice, in September 1998. Edith had worked at the Hickory House Restaurant in Pine Valley, retired from Bendix Corp. in Elmira Heights, and was a retired dietary assistant at the Arnot Ogden Hospital. She was a member of The Glad Tidings Church in Horseheads, The Retreads at the Arnot Ogden Hospital, RSVP, AARP, The Cootie Club, Chemung Valley Seniors Citizens Club, Elmira Heights Legion Auxiliary, Elmira Women of the Moose, and an avid bowler for many years. Mrs. Rice is survived by her son and daughters-in-law, U.S. Army Major Retired Walter and Helen Rice of Pine Valley, NY and Jane Rice of Gillett, PA; daughters and son-in-law, Freda Dalia of Horseheads, NY and Doris E. and John Homberg of Chandler, Arizona; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. WESTERVELT Joyce L. Formerly of Watkins Glen, New York Age 73 passed away Saturday morning, December 2, 2000 in Norwich, NY. She had been a resident of Fort Myers, FL since her retirement in 1989. She was born in Elmira, NY to William and Ruth Smith and was a graduate of Elmira Southside High School. She worked at JC Penney and Remington Rand after graduation from high school before becoming the wife of Carl C. Westervelt. In the 1970's, Joyce became a Cosmetologist and was the owner of Town and Country Beauty Salon for approximately 18 years before she retired and moved to Florida with her husband. Joyce enjoyed playing the organ, sewing and most of all, her family. She devoted her life to making sure her family was loved and cared for, which is her greatest legacy. She always put the needs of others before her own. She was a 4-H leader and volunteered in other capacities as well. She is survived by her husband, Carl C. Westervelt; her sons, James of Womelsdorf, PA and his companion, Kathey Mowry and Gary of Watkins Glen, NY and his wife, Regina; a daughter, Joyce C. Westervelt of Norwich, NY and her husband, Bruce Phetteplace. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Kenneth Westervelt of Elizabethtown, PA, David James Westervelt of Mt. Joy, PA, Donald Westervelt of Waverly, NY, Sharon White of Oceanside, CA, Betsy Westervelt of Watkins Glen, David Ross Westervelt of Norwich, NY and Amanda, Janet and Joseph Westervelt of Watkins Glen, NY. She is survived by two great-grandchildren, Kristin and Matthew Westervelt as well. She is also survived by her sisters, Shirley (Lee) Harlan, Patricia (Joseph) Cotton, Geraldine (Robert) Westervelt and Mildred Matthews; a brother, Harold (Jan) Smith; along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Charles, William and John Smith; and a sister, Mary Holiday. A private service will be held at a later date at the family's convenience. CARTER Dorothy M. (Deats) Age 73, of Gillett, PA, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2001 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. She was born on December 6, 1927 in Rome, PA, a daughter of the late Zern and Mabel (Kromer) Deats. Dorothy was a retired machine operator for Trayer Products, Elmira, NY. She loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed computer games and flower gardening. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 18 years, Clarence E. Carter of Gillett, PA; sons, Ricky David Carter of Gillett, PA and Stephen (Sheila) Carter of Gillett, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Carter and Michael Lipari of Oneonta, NY; grandchildren, Amanda, Nicole, and Kristen Carter, Ricky David, Jr., Crystal, Raymond, Ryan and Randy Carter, step-grandchildren, Robert, Joseph and Katherine Lipari; two great grandchildren; brother, Jesse (Anita) Deats of Windham Twp., PA; sister, Ethel Rifenberg of Warren Center, PA; sister-in-law, Jean Deats of Ottawa, IL; dear friends, Judy (Jake) Janney of Monroetown, PA, Marge (Wilbur) Elliot of Monroetown, PA, Marge Weaver, Shirley Allen, John Bull Shirley Hulslander. HADLEY Wayne Arthur Formerly of Blossburg and Canton, died April 3, 2001. He was the husband of Katheleen McLean Hadley. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7, at Canton Ecumencial Parish at 2:30 PM. Viewing will be one hour before. POPPLETON Joan M. Of Pine City, NY passed away on Sunday April 1, 2001 in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 64 while traveling with her husband Lewis Poppleton. Joan was born on January 26, 1937 in Elmira, NY daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Farr Mirich. She married Lewis G. Poppleton on June 28, 1958 here in Elmira. Together they owned and operated Convenient Food Mart's located on College Avenue in Elmira and Broadway and Franklin Streets on the Southside for many years. Joan was very active throughout her life; traveling, cooking, bowling, gardening and working in the family business occupied her time. But her greatest joy was the precious time she spent with her cherished family. Surviving is her husband and best friend, Lewis G. Poppleton of Pine City, NY; her children, L. Glenn Poppleton of New York City, NY; Margaret L. and Scott Sherman of Brunswick, GA; Alan and Gina Poppleton of Elmira, NY; Patrick and Dorothy Poppleton of Elmira, NY; William Poppleton of Las Vegas, NV; Loretta Burke of Spring Valley, WI; Elizabeth and Michael Isenberg of Hartford, CT; and Amy and Charlie Burke of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Jason Steffans; Alan Jr., Brian and Amanda Poppleton; Tyler and Merrick Sherman; Benjamin and Olivia Poppleton; Dominick and Vincent Minichiello; and Zachary Isenberg; a sister, Mary Houghtaling of FL; nieces, nephews, and dear friends. PORTER Ellsworth G. Age 79 of Main Street, Lockwood, NY, and 2728 Cottage Road (Cayuta Lake) Alpine, NY, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2001 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. Born July 15, 1921 in Waverly, NY, he was the son of the late Herman and Ellen Peppard Porter and the husband of Mildred Seeley Porter. He was a member of the Lockwood United Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II, US army serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a 50 year member and past Master of the Mt. Lebanon Masonic Lodge in VanEtten, NY and presently a member of Masonic Lodge #290, Spencer, NY, Sayre Elks Lodge #1148, The Skiff Bower VFW Post #1536, Sayre, PA, The American Legion Post #492, Waverly, NY and the Athens Senior Citizens. He had owned ad operated Porter's General Store in Lockwood for many years. He had retired from the IR in Athens, PA in assembly after 25 years of service. He is survived by his wife at home, two sons, Mr. Dale (Sibyl) Porter, Aitus, Oklahoma, Mr. David Sears, Holland, NY; one daughter, one daughter, Mrs. Marilyn (John) Porter, Trumansburg, NY; one brother, Mr. George (Ann) Porter, Waverly, NY; three sisters, Mrs. Winifred Hetherton, Elmira, NY, Mrs. Marian (Robert) Wild, Sayre, PA, Mrs. Lois (Leo) Balander, Spencer, N Y; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Loretta Martin, Waverly, NY; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at the Luckner Funeral Home, 449 Park Avenue, Waverly on Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00 PM. COOK Harold J. "Junior" Age 71 of 755 Carpenter Street, Elmira, NY, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at home. Harold was born October 7, 1929 in Elmira, NY, the son of the late John and Agnes (Glover) Cook. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patricia; sons, Donald Joseph (Cathy) Cook and Thomas Paul Cook, both of Elmira; daughters, Caroline (Richard) Tolbert of Pine City and Susan (Jeffery) Cardinale of Elmira; brothers, John Charles Cook of Elmira and Jeremiah Cook of Pine City; sisters Mary Theresa Simpson and Marion Hmiel both of Elmira; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, Joshua, Alexander, Heather, Valerie and Jacob; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Leland Cook. Harold was an avid fisherman, hunter and fan of the Yankees and Giants, he was also a member of the Painter's Union. There will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Tuesday, June 5th, at 6PM at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. TAYLOR Gerald L. Age 87 of 12 Taylor Road Erin, NY passed away on Saturday June 2, 2001 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Taylor was born June 22, 1913 in Bassett, Nebraska the son of the late Lawrence and Lillian Kennedy Taylor. He married his wife, Virginia M. Krejcar Taylor, on September 19, 1936 and they would have celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on September 19, 2001. Mr. Taylor was a retired insurance agent for North American Agriculturist Insurance Company. He owned and operated Taylor's Christmas Tree Farm in Erin, NY for several years. Gerald was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Taylor was pre-deceased by his grandson, Richard P. Kirschke, on January 13, 1990. He was also pre-deceased by his brother, Elmer Taylor and his sister, Theola Wood. Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Virginia M. Krejcar Taylor; his children: James L. & Donna Taylor of Erin, NY, Joyce E. Taylor & Ken Ellison of Erin, NY, and Jerry C. & Sandra Taylor of North Chemung, NY; grandchildren: Kathleen M. Taylor Witt & Jeffrey Witt of Mechanicsburg, PA, James L. Taylor Jr. & Brenda Frey of Elmira, NY, Terri Kirschke of Owego, NY, Robert C. & Angela Taylor of Elmira Heights, NY, and Tiffany A. Taylor of North Chemung, NY; great grandchildren: Jessica Becker, Michael Witt, Nathan C. Taylor, V.G. Ellison, and Andy Ellison; sister: Ruth Howard of Horseheads, NY; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Percy Wood of Erin, NY, Lydia & Frank Elston of Lowman, NY, George & Marjorie Krejcar of Erin, NY; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Van Buskirk-Lynch Funeral Home Mill St. & Grand Central Ave. Horseheads, NY on Tuesday January 5, 2001 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Mr. Taylor's Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday June 6, 2001 at 11 AM. Interment in Scotchtown Cemetery in Erin, NY. Flowers are acceptable or those wishing may remember Mr. Taylor through memorials to The American Diabetes Association.
