DOROTHEA HAUS ROSS
Mrs. Dorothea Haus Ross died on Thursday, October 26, 2000. She was 94. Mrs. Ross is the founder of the Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation to help children.
Mrs. Ross was born Dorothea Haus on August 6, 1906. Dotsy, as she was known to her family and friends, was the younger daughter of the late Simon Victor Haus, who was born in Alsace, and Anna Noeth Haus of Rochester, NY. Dorothea, and her sister, Georgiana, born in 1903, spent much of the early life in England, where their father was George Eastman’s General Manager for European factories for the Eastman Kodak Company. It was Mr. Haus’ job to establish new Eastman Kodak plants in European countries, including England and Hungary.
In 1932, under the tutelage of flight instructor Vic Evans, Mrs. Ross earned a private pilot’s license. She was only the second local woman to earn a private pilot’s license in a powered airplane, and eventually accumulated over 2,000 hours of flying time. She was also an accomplished glider pilot. Mrs. Ross spent much of her spare time at the Scottsville Road Airport in Rochester, and it was there, in 1949, that she met Richard B. Ross, who would later become her second husband. Following their marriage in 1950, the couple bought a farm on Taylor Road in Mendon and spent many happy years together until Richard’s untimely death in 1975.
Mrs. Ross’ charitable interest in children began in 1940, when she took pity on the plight of European children being removed for safety reasons from likely urban bombing targets in Europe, and sent to live in rural areas or other countries. In response to this, she began supporting Foster parents, and eventually became a life member of "Save the Children." She continued to support displaced and orphaned children for the duration of the war. Later, she became sympathetic to impoverished American Indians and began contributing generously to improve Native Americans welfare. In 1957, she and Mr. Ross befriended a Native American family living in Arizona, and saw a generation of their children through college.
The idea o start America’s first foundation devoted exclusively to problems affecting children was suggested to Mrs. Ross by her long-time friend and attorney, Philetus M. Chamberlain of Rochester. The Foundation, which began in 1979, was therefore a natural outgrowth of Mrs. Ross’ 39-year tradition of helping children.
There is no prior visitation. Interment at Mendon Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Merton H. Kays Funeral Home in Honeoye Falls.
