Marjorie Martuscello
November 16, 1999
Marjorie Quinn Martuscello, 91, formerly of Ireland Avenue, Fort Johnson, died Tuesday evening at Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where she had been a resident.
She was born Nov. 6, 1908, in Amsterdam, the daughter of James and Anna O'Brien Quinn. She attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Martuscello was a seamstress for Lurie's Department Store in Amsterdam for many years.
She was a member of the Fort Johnson Senior Citizens, a former member of the Nimble Fingers Sewing Club, and a past member of St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary.
She was a vocalist with radio stations WGY in Schenectady and WOKO in Albany from 1928 until 1936.
She attended Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill and was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
She married John M. Martuscello Sr. April 18, 1932. He died April 30, 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Neil Martuscello Sr. of Amsterdam and John Martuscello Jr. of Fort Johnson; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Friday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam.

Ronald Riley
November 14, 1999
Ronald K. Riley, 84, formerly of Ballston Lake, died Sunday at the Schuyler Ridge Residential Home in Clifton Park.
Born in Johnstown, he was a 1933 graduate of Gloversville High School.
Mr. Riley was a planning specialist for 30 years in the power-tube and various large steam turbine departments with the General Electric Co. in Schenectady.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 1174 and a former treasurer of the PTA in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District. He was a church school superintendent, a teacher at Burnt Hills United Methodist Church for many years, and was involved in the Mohawk Pathways Girl Scouts.
He married Marion H. Bunn in 1936. She died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia L. Riley of Ballston Lake; a sister, Evelyn La Pier of California; and three grandchildren.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Townley and Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake.
Burial will be in East Line Union Cemetery, Malta.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Masonic services will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, 971 Route 146, Clifton Park.

Sylvia Madej
December 4, 1999
Sylvia Madej, 82, of New St., Amsterdam, died unexpectedly Saturday morning at home.
She was born Sept. 29, 1917, in Rapelje, Mont., the daughter of Ype and Anna van der Bij Kingma. She lived in Amsterdam since 1946.
She was a supervisor of housekeeping for Amsterdam Memorial Hospital for 19 years, retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Madej was a member of the First Reformed Church, Amsterdam. She was also a member of the Port Jackson Seniors.
She married Henry Madej Feb. 19, 1944. He died July 31, 1999.
Survivors include a son, Henry M. Madej of Albany; a daughter, Ann Madej of Bellingham, Wash.; four brothers, Simon and Ralph Kingma, both of Lynden, Wash., Louis Kingma of Everett, Wash., and Fred Stremler of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Dorothy Hobson of Anacortes, Wash., and Martha Loomer of Medical Lake, Wash.; a grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial funeral is scheduled at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church, Florida Avenue and Arch Street, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Scott Crane officiating.
Interment will be in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Reformed Church.

Theodore Sacawa
December 4, 1999
Theodore J. Sacawa, 82, of James Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday evening at the Hallmark Nursing Centre in Schenectady.
He was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Amsterdam, the son of Max and Edna Pabis Sacawa. He was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Sacawa was a spinner at Mohawk Carpet Mills. Later, he worked for the American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady. Lastly, he was a shake-out operator for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady before retiring in 1977.
During World War II, he served as a military policeman with the Army.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, a life member of VFW Post 22 and John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701.
He married Sophie Novak Nov. 24, 1938.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Theodore W. Sacawa of Schenectady; a grandson; and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church or the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Arrangements are by the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam.

Barbara Quinn
December 4, 1999
Barbara Poulin Quinn, 58, of Brookside Avenue, Amsterdam, died Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home.
She was born in Amsterdam Feb. 19, 1941, the daughter of George and Beatrice Lingenfelter DiCaprio. She was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
Her first husband, Joseph Poulin, died in 1974.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Quinn, whom she married Aug. 12, 1983; two sons, Edward H. and Thomas Poulin, both of Amsterdam; two daughters, Tammy Poulin and Christine Snell, both of Amsterdam; four sisters, Jean LaBate, Elaine Furman and Patricia Mannino, all of Amsterdam, and Shirley Gardner of Rome; and three grandchildren.
The funeral is 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Betz, Rossi, & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Make A Wish Foundation.

Laura Wilson
December 5, 1999
Laura M. Wilson, 80, formerly of Apple Street, Gloversville, died Sunday at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility.
She was born and educated in Fultonville and lived most of her life in Gloversville.
She was a glove maker for the former Musgraves Co., retiring in 1980.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of the auxiliaries of the Gloversville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Gloversville Moose Lodge.
Her husband, Burton Wilson, died in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Claire Thatcher of Northville; a son, Burton J. Wilson of Gloversville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery.

Marcella Staulters
December 4, 1999
Marcella Staulters, 77, of Goode Street, Ballston Spa, died Saturday at home after a long illness.
Born in Loyalhanna, Pa., Mrs. Staulters grew up in Candor, Tioga County, and graduated from Candor High School.
During World War II, she was an airplane spotter in Candor.
Mrs. Staulters moved to Ballston Spa and worked at the Navy supply depot in Schenectady during the war. She and her husband owned and operated the former Village Squire for 20 years. She was a legal secretary for Van Aernem and Hall for 35 years, retiring in 1991.
She was a life member of the Clifton Park Elks Ladies Auxiliary 2466 and a member of the ladies auxiliaries of VFW Post 385 and American Legion Post 234, where she was a past president and past county president.
Mrs. Staulters also was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ballston Spa and the local craft club.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Staulters; a son, David DiPasquale of Overland Park, Kan.; two stepsons, Carl Staulters of Amsterdam and William Staulters of Rotterdam; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Thursday at the Armer Funeral Home, 39 E. High St., Ballston Spa.
Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Veronica DiAlexander, 82, of the Roosevelt Apartments, Wall Street, Amsterdam, died suddenly Sunday evening at home.

Chester Olszewski
December 8, 1999
Chester J. Olszewski, 80, of Schenectady died Wednesday at home.
Born in Schenectady April 13, 1919, he was a lifelong Schenectady resident.
He was supervisor in the large motors and generator department at General Electric Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1979.
Mr. Olszewski was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Rotterdam Lodge 2157. He had also served as a volunteer fireman in Schenectady and Vischer's Ferry.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of St. Adalbert's Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Nellie Skowronek Olszewski; two sons, Chester R. Olszewski of Scotia and Lawrence J. Olszewski of Rotterdam; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Adalbert.
Entombment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Helen Phillips
December 9, 1999
Helen C. Phillips, 89, of Oneonta, died Thursday at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.
She was born May 2, 1910, in Amsterdam, the daughter of George and Jessie Stern Clark. She lived in Albany most of her life, moving to Oneonta in 1988 to be with her daughter.
She attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.
Mrs. Phillips was predeceased by her husband, Paul H. Phillips, in 1988.
Survivors include three sons, Clark Phillips of New Brunswick, Canada, Ardison Phillips of Oceana, Calif., and Michael Phillips of Los Angeles; a daughter, Susan Thomas Mancke of Oneonta; a cousin; and six grandchildren.
The funeral is 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church officiating.
Burial is 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 400 Main St., Oneonta 13820.

Martha Suave
December 9, 1999
Martha Van Arnam Sauve, 81, of Hillside Avenue, Niskayuna, died Thursday at home after a short illness.
She was born in Northville and lived in Washington, D.C., for 50 years before moving to Niskayuna in 1992. She was a 1936 graduate of Northville High School, received a bachelor's degree in 1940 from Russell Sage College, and a master's degree from the University if Michigan in 1941.
She worked for the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., for 25 years, retiring as director of blood donation resources.
She was active in the Albany Presbytery and a member of and elder at Union Presbyterian Church in Schenectady.
Her husband, Leslie E. Sauve, died in 1968.
Survivors include a son, Van L. Sauve of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, H. Robert Van Arnam of Northville; a sister, Marion Mosher of Northville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Union Presbyterian Church, 1068 Park Ave., Schenectady.
There are no calling hours.
Burial will be in Northville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Presbyterian Church or Russell Sage College.
Arrangements are by the Jones Funeral Home of Schenectady.

Emily DelCostello
December 9, 1999
Emily "Nicki" DelCostello of Village Lane East, Hagaman, died late Thursday evening at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a brief illness.
