August 14, 2003
Baby Jordan Marie Orengo, 6 months, of Romeyn Avenue, Amsterdam, died Thursday evening at the Albany Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 2003 at the Albany Medical Center, she was the daughter of Misty Goodwin and Edgardo Orengo, both of Amsterdam.
Besides her parents, survivors include a brother, Michel Orengo; a sister, Isabella Orengo; maternal grandfather, Dennis Goodwin Sr. of Alabama; paternal grandparents Rosa Orengo and Miguel Orengo Sr., both of Amsterdam; godparents Gabriel and Jessica Orengo; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam with the Rev. James Gulley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats in Fonda. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.

Genevieve Opalka
August 15, 2003
Mrs. Genevieve Opalka, 87, formerly of Clibze Avenue, Amsterdam, died Friday at the Wilkinson Skilled Nursing Facility.
She was born Oct. 6, 1915 in the Town of Charleston, a daughter of the late Peter and Libby Bialobok. She was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a spinner at Mohawk Carpet Co. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Rosary Society.
She was married to Clement L. Opalka; he died Jan. 26, 2000. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Steve Bialobok, Mary Ohenkowski, Agnes Kosiba, Albert Bialobok, Bernice Bialobok and Anthony Bialobok.
Survivors include a sister, Nellie Blongiewicz of Hagaman; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 9:30 Monday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call beginning at 8:30 Monday morning at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church, Park Hill Adult Home or to the Wilkinson Residential Center.

Erasmo Colon
August 15, 2003
Erasmo Colon, 40, of Voorhees Street, Amsterdam, passed away Friday morning at his home following a long illness.
Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on Aug. 5, 1963, he was a son of Erasmo and Delia Valentin Colon Sr. He grew up in Puerto Rico and was a graduate of the Reavilotacion Vocasional School in Ponce. He had lived in Amsterdam for the past several years.
He worked in Puerto Rico at various restaurants in the Panuelas area. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church Santiadad and Fuego in Amsterdam.
In addition to his mother, Delia Valentin Colon, survivors include a son, Emanuel Colon of Ponce, Puerto Rico; two daughters, Delimaris and Angelica Colon; three sisters, Marta, Delvis and Lissette Colon; three brothers, Anibal, Hector and Wilson Colon; a grandchild; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held in Panuelas, Puerto Rico this week.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Nancy Constantino
August 15, 2003
Mrs. Nancy D. Constantino, 83, of Clizbe Avenue, Amsterdam, died Saturday at her home after a long illness.
Born March 25, 1920 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Paul and Concetta DiCaprio Parillo. She was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mrs. Constantino co-owned and operated with her husband, the Redwood Drive In and later, Pic-N-Totem in Amsterdam. She also worked at various businesses in the Amsterdam area.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Constantino was a devoted mother, always working, loved crocheting, knitting and making home crafts, which she would give away as gifts over the years.
She was married in 1949 to Philip Constantino, who died in 1983.
Survivors include her loving family: a son, Jerry Constantino; five brothers, Ralph and Anthony Parillo, both of Amsterdam, Carl Parillo of Schenectady, John Parillo of Mississippi and Joseph Parillo of Arizona; three sisters, Mary Madej and Caroline Stellato, both of Amsterdam and Josephine Vosburgh of Schenectady. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Mrs. Constantino was predeceased by a stepmother, Maria Parillo; two brothers, Frank and Angelo Parillo and a sister, Theresa DeSisto.
Funeral services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Antoinette Bonafede
August 20, 2003
Antoinette Bonafede 87, formerly of John Street, passed away Wednesday afternoon at the Hospice Inn of Bradenton, Fla.
Born in Yost, NY on March 30, 1916, a daughter of Joseph and Maria Fusela Bernardo, she lived in Amsterdam for over sixty years.
A homemaker, she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the James Bergen Post 39 Auxiliary. She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and was a member of it's Altar Rosary Society.
On April 8, 1934, she was united in marriage to Salvatore Bonafede. He predeceased her on March 6, 1999.
Her loving family includes her children, Christopher J. Bonafede of Bradenton; Maryann Pattengale of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla; Donna Allen of Sterling, Va.; a sister, Josephine Wayland of Scotia; two grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue. Father Lawrence J. Decker, officiating.
Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery.
A calling hour will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday prior to the service.
Contributions may be made to St. Michael's Memorial fund.

Catherine Buchner
August 25, 2003
Mrs. Catherine Buchner, 91, of Arkell Hall and Sprakers died on August 25, 2003 at Palatine Nursing Home after a long illness.
Catherine was born October 9, 1911, in Sprakers, the youngest child of Edgar B. and Mae Sophia Moyer who were prominent dairy farmers and well known in the area. Catherine maintained the stewardship of their land throughout her entire lifetime.
She received her B.A. from Oneonta State Teachers College and did her graduate work at Syracuse University and Albany State. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the College of Spoken Word in Brookline, MA.
Catherine taught for many years, starting in a one room schoolhouse in Corbin Hill and retiring from Fort Plain Central. She will be remembered by hundreds of children who were fortunate enough to have been her students.
She was a lifetime member of the Currytown Reformed Church.
Catherine and her husband spent many happy years raising and showing Arabian horses all over the northeast and obtaining many championships along the way.
She is predeceased by her husband, William Buchner, who died in 1985, her parents, and two brothers, Dr. Haverly Moyer of Platttsburgh and Richard Moyer of Fairport.
She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Vickary of Fly Creek and Linda Russell of Sprakers; three grandsons, Jeff Watson, James Moyer and Kenneth Moyer and their families; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Moyer; two nieces, several cousins and many loving friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2003 at 12:00 noon at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Catherine's memory may be made to the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, Inc., 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166.

Amelio "Moon" Merendo
August 26, 2003
Mr. Amelio "Moon" Merendo, 80, of Glen Avenue passed away Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
He was born August 29, 1922 in Amsterdam, NY a son of the late Carmello and Francesca De Fina Merendo. Educated locally, he was a lifelong city resident.
During World War II, Mr, Merendo served in the Army in Europe.
He was employed by Weber Construction, Callahan Industries, Persico Bros. and Santos Construction Company for many years before retiring.
He enjoyed bowling and cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam, NY.
He was also a member of Local 157 Laborers Union of Schenectady and a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701.
He was married to Edith Kenney Merendo. She died May 9, 1986.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Anne Oram (Tom), Schenectady, NY, Frances Redmond, Amsterdam, NY; two sons, Joseph and John Merendo both of Amsterdam, NY; seven grandchildren, Tiffany Redmond, Amsterdam, NY, Brady (Jennifer) Redmond, Elkton, MD, Jeremy, Courtney and Lindsay Redmond all of Albany, NY, Cara Oram, Schenectady, NY and Kiley Oram, New York City, NY; two great grandchildren, Chantal and Chelsey; one brother, Carmen Merendo, Amsterdam, one sister, Rose Sobkowich, Amsterdam, NY; one sister-in-law, Edith Mendus, Schenectady, NY; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Silvio, Albert, Victor, Julius, Anthony and Joseph and by his sisters, Frances and Cecilia Bindulski.
The funeral will be held 10:15 Friday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 o'clock at St. Mary's Church.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
Relatives and friends may call 5:00-8:00 Thursday afternoon and evening with the American Legion service at 6:00 p.m.

Leland E. Bouck
August 26, 2003
Leland E. Bouck, 65, of Dahlia lane, Fultonville died early Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born on June 8, 1938 in Canajoharie he was the son of Paul Bouck and Ida Mae Bellinger. Mr. Bouck attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Leland was employed as an equipment installer over 25 years for Frontier Telephone formerly Citizens Communications until his retirement in 1996.
He was of the Lutheran faith and a member of the IBEW Local Union.
Survivors include his mother, Ida Mae Istle of Sharon Springs; two sons, William M. Bouck and Douglas E. Bouck of Randall; one daughter, Jody A. Palmer of Ilion, NY; two brothers, David P. Bouck of Fort Plain and Russell S. Bouck of Randall; one sister, Pauline M. Wagner of Palatine Bridge; five grandchildren; one great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie.
Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Carl G. Niemyer
August 25, 2003
Mr. Carl G. Niemyer, 75, of Walnut Street, Canajoharie, NY died Monday, August 25, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam after a brief illness.
He was born in Canajoharie, NY on September 23, 1927 a son of William James and Lucille Goetz Niemyer.
Mr. Niemyer was educated at Canajoharie Schools.
Mr. Niemyer was employed at Beech-Nut Corp., in Canajoharie as a forklift driver for over 40 years.
He was a lifelong area resident and a Veteran of World War II serving in the Military Police in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. John's & St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.
Mr. Niemyer was also a member of the Smith-Schultz American Legion Post #222 in Canajoharie; the VFW Earl Stock Post #3275 in Fort Plain; a former member of McKinley Grange located in the Town of Palatine; a member of the Canajoharie/Fort Plain Elks Lodge #2621; and the Beech-Nut 25 Year Club.
He married Esther Holtz Niemyer on April 2, 1966 at the former St. Mark's Lutheran Church, she died July 3, 2001.
Survivors include four daughters and one son-in-law, Carla Brower, Middlegrove, NY, Sheila Young, Saranac Lake, NY, Linda and Bill Pettey, Sprakers, NY, Lorraine Larbell, Canajoharie, NY; three sons, Ralph Niemyer, Charlotte, NC, Shaun Kavin Niemyer, Lawrenceville, GA, Lou F. Larbell, Canajoharie, NY; one brother, William Niemyer, Clifton Park, NY; one sister, Prudence Hall. Rochester, NY; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A 10:00 a.m. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 29, 2003 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Gail Wolling officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery with full military honors at graveside by the Fort Plain Earl Stock VFW Post #3275.
Family will receive friends and relatives from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28 at the funeral home.

Joseph Kuczynski
August 26, 2003
Mr. Joseph Kuczynski, 88, of Law Place died Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital after being transferred from the Edward L. Wilkinson RHCF where he has been a patient for over one year.
He was born September 14, 1914 in the Town of Amsterdam and he was the son of Joseph and Helen Bakuzonis Kuczynski. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Kuczynski was a machinist at the Sanford Mills, Navy Depot in Scotia, and was last employed by the Watervliet Arsenal from 1959-1976.
As a hobby he enjoyed working as a mechanic on cars, motorcycles and bicycles. After his retirement he purchased and rode a motorcycle for ten years.
He was a communicant of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman and at one time served as an usher at St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Kuczynski was married in 1939 to the former Helen Nawrocki.
Besides his wife survivors include a son, Joseph A. Kuczynski of York, PA; three daughters, Kathleen E. Fiola of Thiells, NY, Sr. Barbara M. Kuczynski, C.S.J. of Syracuse and Patricia Marshall of Broadalbin; two sisters, Sr. Marietta Kuczynski, C.S.J. of St. Luke's Parish in Schenectady and Jessie Brach of Hagaman; two grandchildren, Cynthia Kuczynski of York, PA and Craig Kuczynski of Austin, TX.
Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman. Burial will take place in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
A legacy candle ceremony will be at 6:30p.m. that evening at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Stephen's Memorial Fund.
