Ruth R. Skakel
Born in Stone Arabia, NY on Oct. 26, 1918
At Rest Aug. 3, 2010 and resided in Johnstown, NY.

Mrs. Ruth R. Skakel, 91, of County Highway 107, Johnstown, NY died peacefully Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Nathan Littauer Hospital following a brief illness. Born on October 26, 1918 she was the daughter of the late Elmer Hinkle and Katie Edick Hinkle.

A lifelong area resident, Ruth graduated from Johnstown High School and became a professional glove maker with the former George Johns, Inc. leather company. A active member of the Foot Hills United Methodist Church, Ruth worked tirelessly on church activities, especially dinners and fundraisers; and was a member of the adult Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Johnstown Seniors, Rebecca Lodge and enjoyed cooking, baking, and making homemade ice cream. Above all she loved her family and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Ruth was predeceased by her two husbands, Alfred C. Edel and Floyd H. Skakel; and many brothers and sisters.

Her family includes her son Richard C. Edel of Johnstown, NY; two step sons, Floyd H. Skakel, Jr. of New Windsor, NY and Jack Skakel of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two grandchildren, Ryan C. Edel and his wife Dixie of Park City, UT and Elizabeth A. Edel of Johnstown, NY; and one great grandson, Conner R. Edel. Ruth is also survived by the family of Floyd and Marie Skakel, consisting of five grandchildren, Brian, James, Kevin, Laurie and Kim; as well as 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 11 o'clock at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 North William Street, Johnstown, NY with the Rev. Cynthia VanAllen presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Sandflats, Fonda, NY. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 4 until 7p.m. Friday, August 6, 2010 at the funeral home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth's memory to the Foot Hills United Methodist Church or The Shirley J. Luck Senior Citizen's Center.

Albert E. Gordon
Born in Gloversville, NY on Apr. 3, 1932

Albert E. Gordon, 78, of Gloversville passed away on Friday August 6, 2010 at home.
He was born in Gloversville, NY on April 3, 1932 the son of the late Edward and Mildred (Rowback) Gordon.
On December 5, 1953 Albert married the former Elsie Prahm. They shared 47 years united in marriage until her passing on February 21, 2000.
Albert is survived by a brother, Harold Gordon (Ellen), 5 sisters, Eleanor Countryman, Audrey Godes, Janice VandeWalker, Gloria Pazzaglia and Terry VanDyke (Kenny).
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Gordon and two sisters, Beatrice Melucci and Joyce Mulhall.
There will be no calling hours or services. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematorium in Schenectady. Interment will be at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown at the convenience of the family.

Leo H. Curry Sr.
Born in Gloversville, NY on Jun. 15, 1942

Leo H. Curry Sr., age 68, of Gloversville passed away on Friday August 6, 2010 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
He was born in Gloversville, NY on June 15, 1942 the son of the late Harry and Dorothy (Pettit) Curry.
Leo enjoyed camping, playing cards and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Leo is survived by his 11 children: Leo H. Curry Jr. (Nanette) of Gloversville, Patrick Curry (Jennifer) of Amsterdam, Justin Hanna (Tonia) of Canajoharie, Brandon Hanna (Trish) of Cohoes, NY, Karen Curry (Chris) of Gloversville, Rebecca Greene (Walter) of Canajoharie, Elizabeth Hanna (Tom) of Clifton Park, NY, Gabrielle Hanna (Daniel) of Mechanicville, NY, Donyel Bouchard of Latham, NY and Lauren Hanna of Latham, NY.
Additional survivors include: 22 grandchildren, a brother Vernon E. Hurd Jr. and a sister, Francis McWalker.
A special friend Francis Vrooman (Miss Lolly) also survives.
In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by a son Richard Curry, a sister Gloria Young and Vernon E. Hurd Sr., who raised Leo.
Friends and relatives are invited and may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday August 9, 2010 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady.

Joseph P. Rogers
Born in Amsterdam, New York on Jan. 13, 1923

Joseph P. Rogers, 87, formerly of the Hi-Rise Apartments, passed away peacefully Monday evening at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam on January 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Vincent and Elizabeth Staniulis Racys (Rogers). A 1941 graduate of the Perth Central School, he was a lifelong resident. During World War II, Joe proudly served with the US Army as a private First Class in the European Theater Of Operations. He was awarded three bronze stars, the Victory & European medals as well as a citation from Sen. Hugh Farley later in life honoring him for his service in the French campaign.
He was an honorary life member of the Disabled American Veterans. In these last years, Joe recounted many of the experiences he went through during the war. Joe worked for a number of years as a research and dye technician for Mohasco and later at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital before he retired in 1985. He was a parishioner of the former St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church.
On August 16, 1953 he was united in marriage to the former Rose Poremba at St. Stanislaus’ Church. She predeceased him on Oct. 7, 1999. Brothers Stanley and Francis Rogers, and sisters Nellie Traskos and Polly Kutinskas also predeceased him.
His loving family includes his daughter Anne and her husband Dennis Haggerty of Johnstown; son James J. and his wife Andrea Rogers of Amsterdam; brother Alfred and his wife Virginia Rogers of Perth; grandchildren; Matthew Rogers, Michael Miller, Jennifer Rogers and Kaitlyn Rogers; step grandchildren; Dereck Haggerty, Lt. Cdr. Brian (Lisa) Haggerty USN, Jenne and Shanan Haggerty; step great grandchildren Lauren, James and Elizabeth Haggerty; sisters in law; Eleanor P. Smith of Amsterdam and Lylian Rogers of Scotia; a brother in law Ted Zawilinski of Bloomington Ind.; nieces, nephews and cousins. Joseph’s family is most grateful to the staff of the second floor at Mt. Loretto for their kindness and wonderful care he received this past year.
Services are Thursday at 9:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Funeral Mass which will be offered at 10:00 am at St. Stanislaus’ Church. Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis, celebrant, assisted by Deacon Alfred Manzella. Interment will follow with military honors in St. Casimir’s Cemetery. calling hours are today from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Community Hospice Of Amsterdam or GAVAC both in care of the funeral home office.

Dorothy E. Thane
Born in Little Ferry, New Jersey on Jun. 23, 1920

Dorothy E. Thane, 90, of 115 Laurel Drive, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson RHCF. Born in Little Ferry, NJ on June 23, 1920, Dorothy was the daughter of William and Bessie Volk. A graduate of Teaneck High School and the Eagan Business School, Dorothy's favorite positions were attendance officer for River Dell High School and bookkeeper for A. Thane and Sons, the family plumbing and heating business. On December 30, 1951 she was united in marriage to Donald R. Thane. Throughout her life, her priorities were always those of homemaker and devoted mother to her children. Dorothy and her husband Donald retired in 1987 to the family farm in Harpersfield, NY, where she was a member of the local Grange. In addition to her husband Donald, Dorothy leaves her children: Michael W. Thane and his wife Carol Sulis of Hingham, MA; Jeffrey D. Thane and his wife Sharon Donohue of Oradell, NJ; Peter J. Thane and his wife Ann Thane of Amsterdam, NY; Betsy T. McDowell and her husband Jule McDowell of Cary, NC; and seven grandchildren. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Cremation will take place at Vale Crematory in Schenectady. There are no calling hours and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy's name to the Montgomery County SPCA to honor her love of animals. Contributions may be made in care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home to whom her family has entrusted her care.

Thelma F. Granger
Born in Maple Town, NY on Apr. 28, 1919

Mrs. Thelma "Tillie" Granger, 91, formerly of Fort Plain, NY died peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2010 following a short illness at the Palatine Nursing Home. Born in Maple Town, NY on April 28, 1919 she was the daughter of Thomas A. Francis and Lulu Whyland Francis.

A lifelong area resident, Tillie graduated Fort Plain Central and then went to work for the district as a secretary retiring in 1982. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served on the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society and the Montgomery County Heart Association.

Tillie was a member of the United Methodist Church of Fort Plain, and was married at the parsonage to Orville C. Granger on May 16, 1941. That union lasted 45 years until his passing on June 11, 1987. She was also predeceased by her sisters Evelyn F. Carron and Mildred R. Ford.

Her family includes two sons; Brian F. Granger of Wales, MA and Wayne O. Granger of Cooperstown, NY; and her special daughter in law, Leslie K. Bell and her husband Rick of Palatine Bridge, NY. Tillie was the proud grandmother, "Nena" of Jason P. Granger and his wife Michelle of Schenectady, NY and Gavin B. Granger of Albany, NY. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A Service of Remembrance will be held graveside on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 11 o'clock at the Fort Plain Cemetery with the Rev. Alan Griffith presiding. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tillie's memory may be made to the United Methodist Church of Fort Plain, The American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home office.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
