Anthony M. Schultz, 91, of Middleburgh, died Saturday at the Robinson Terrace Health Care Facility after a brief illness.
Mr. Schultz was born in Westfield, Mass., and lived in Sharon Springs from 1965 to 1986 when he moved to Middleburgh.
He was vice president of the New York and New Jersey Lubricating Company, retiring in 1967.
After his retirement, Mr. Schultz was a farmer in the Sharon Springs area until 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Stasia Usyk Schultz; two sons, Anthony Schultz of Escondido, Calif., and Kenneth Schultz of Albany; a brother, Raymond Schultz of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a sister, Wanda Meagher of Agawam, Mass.
A service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Route 20, Sharon Springs.
Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours will be private.
Dorothy Yates
December 14, 1996
Mrs. Dorothy Mae Yates, 77, of Kasson Drive, Canada Lake, died Saturday at home after a long illness.
Born in Gloversville, Mrs. Yates was a graduate of Gloversville High School and attended Oneonta State Teachers College, Bard College and the Gloversville Business School.
She also completed real estate courses in Albany and at Fulton Montgomery Community College. Mrs. Yates was a bookkeeper for the New York State Veterans Hospital Authority in Gloversville in the late 1940s.
She was a real estate saleswoman and a New York state licensed notary public and was a substitute teacher at the Oppenheim Ephratah School, the Meco School and in the Johnstown School System.
Mrs. Yates owned and operated Grandma's Attic Antiques and Craft Store in Caroga Lake.
She owned and operated various businesses with her husband, including the Caroga Lake General Store, and Canada Lake Store and Island View Cottages.
Mrs. Yates also was a 50-year partner with her husband in the Burton H. Yates Real Estate Brokerage in Canada Lake.
Mrs. Yates was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church and the Christian Faith Fellowship, both in Gloversville. She was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, choir member and soloist.
Survivors include her husband, Burton E. Yates, whom she married Dec. 31, 1941; two daughters, Diane Yates-Comtois of Albany and Kathy Smith of Aurora, Colo.; three sons, Alan Yates of Clifton Park, David Yates of Caroga Lake and Richard Yates of Tenafly, N.J.; two brothers, Sherwood Smith of Johnstown and Robert Smith of Gloversville; a sister, Beverly Thompson of Gloversville; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grand-daughter.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Main Street United Methodist Church.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville.
Elisabeth Smith
December 14, 1996
Mrs. Elisabeth S. Smith, 78, of 85 E. Main St., Johnstown, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a long illness.
Born in Rome, Ga., Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Cornelia High School in Cornelia, Ga., and attended the University of Georgia in Athens. She was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She was the secretary of the Polyflex Bag and Container Corp., a family-owned business operated by her husband.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Smith also owned and operated T.L.C. Standardbred Stables in Saratoga Springs. She was a member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Students Club, the Johnstown Hospital and Wells House Auxiliary and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Her husband, Holland Wright Smith II, whom she married Dec. 31, 1937, died July 16, 1967.
Survivors include a son, H. Wright Smith III of Johnstown; a daughter, Lisa S. Mehigan of Johnstown; a brother, George B. Stoffregen of Cornelia; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. There will be no calling hours.
Cremation will be at the Leatherstocking Crematory in Cherry Valley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the First Presbyterian Church, or to the Johnstown Hospital and Wells House Auxiliary.

Elizabeth Hackert
December 16, 1996
Miss Elizabeth M. Hackert, 101, formerly of 53 Romeym Ave., Amsterdam,. died this morning at the Parkhill Adult Home in Amsterdam, after being a resident there for four years.
Born Oct. 12, 1895 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Jacob and Anna Meyer Hackert. Miss Hackert was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam, and a graduate of St. Joseph's School.
Miss Hackert was employed for a number of years by Mohawk Carpet Mills in Amsterdam, retiring in 1966.
She was communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
Miss Hackert is survived by four nephews, James Hackert, and William McQuatters both of Hagaman; Richard Hackert of Gloversville, and Paul Hackert of Carlsbad, Calif.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam.
Burial will take place n St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern New York Chapter, 1717 Central Ave., Albany 12205.
Mary Hewitt
December 14, 1996
Mrs. Mary Whethers Hewitt, 76, formerly of Route 162, Sprakers, died Saturday at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, where she had lived since March 1995.
Born Feb. 12, 1920 in Northern Ireland, she moved to Poughquag, Dutchess County, in 1964 and came to Sprakers in 1984.
She married William Hewitt on Feb. 12, 1943. He died July 1, 1993.
Survivors include a son, Robert Hewitt off Wappingers Falls; a daughter, Ann Cochrane of Millbrook; and four grandchildren.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie . Burial will be in Charleston Christian Church Cemetery.
The Rev. Eric J. Handel will officiate. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Douglas Ayres Animal Shelter in Sprakers or to the Charleston Christian Church, 1380 E. Lykers Road, Sprakers, 12166.
Omar Welcome
December 15, 1996
Omar A. Welcome, 84, of West Mechanic Street, Corinth, died Sunday at Saratoga Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Cohoes, Mr. Welcome was raised and attended schools there. He lived on Sacandaga Lake for 20 years and in Saratoga Springs before moving to Corinth in 1993. He worked as a salesman for the Smith Beauty and Barbar Supply Company in Troy for more than 25 years. He also worked at the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady for several years.
Mr. Welcome was a former Town of Day assessor and a former member of the Pleasantdale Fire Department, the Sacandaga Senior Citizens and the United Mehodist Church in Northville.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Whynott Welcome, whom he married May 19, 1957; two daughters, Carol Pierce of New Port Richey, Fla., and Phyllis Pfitz of Pleasantdale; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville.
A service at the funeral home will immediately follow the calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Corinth Emergency Corps or the National Parkinson's Foundation in care of Albany Medical Center.
Sophronia Pierce
December 14, 1996
Mrs. Sophronia Pierce, 96, of Colonial Village in Howes Cave, formerly of South Main Street, Central Bridge, died Saturday at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill. She had lived with her daughter in Colonial Village for the last year.
Mrs. Pierce was born in Schoharie and attended Schoharie schools.
She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm on Turner Road in Schoharie for many years until retiring in 1960.
Mrs. Pierce then moved to Gloversville where she worked as a house cleaner for area homes. She returned to Central Bridge in 1968.
She was a member of the Central Bridge United Methodist Church and its Cleaners Club.
Mrs. Pierce was also a member of the Central Bridge Senior Citizens and the former Schoharie Valley Grange and a former member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church of Gloversville.
She married A. Lincoln Pierce on Nov. 9, 1919. He died Sept. 26, 1968.
Survivors include a son, Robert F. Pierce of Grosvenors Corners; three daughters, Shirley M. Harper of Frostproof, Fla., Harriet Flansburg of Caroga Lake and Mary Ellen Kennedy of Howes Cave; a sister, Mildred Pierce of Massachusetts; 36grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
A service is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Langan Funeral Home, 21 N. Main St., Central Bridge.
Burial will follow in Lutheran Cemetery in Schoharie.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill Rescue Squad, Main Street, Cobleskill, 12043.
Lawrence Havens
December 12, 1996
Lawrence Havens, 70, of Canajoharie, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Mr. Havens was employed for 30 years as a dispatcher for Central Hudson, in Poughkeepsie.
He resided in Canajoharie since 1987, previously residing in Pleasant Valley. He was a member of the Hudson Valley Draft Horse Association and a former 4-H leader. He served in the US Navy during World War II.
He was born on Nov. 4, 1926 in Poughkeepsie, the son of Lawrence A. Havens and Emma Brooks.
He married Mary Sheedy on Jan. 8, 1049. She died April 22, 1982.
Survivors include sons, Lawrence J. Havens of Amenia, N.Y., Timothy C. Havens of Canajoharie, Charles Havens of Tucson, Ariz., Mark Havens of Pleasant Valley; daughters, Mary Galbraith of Poughkeepsie, and Margaret Hart of Pleasant Valley; a sister, Elizabeth Costello of Hyde Park; 16 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, Main St., Pleasant Valley.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
Alfred Clark
December 7, 1996
Alfred Clark, 92, of Batesville, Ark., died Dec. 7 at his home.
Born Dec. 12, 1903 in Batesville, he was the son of Jerry Wayne and Ella Fulbright Clark. He was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Batesville and a retired farmer.
Survivors include two sons, Doyle Wayne Clark of Weisner, La., and Bobby Gene Acord of Manila; eight daughters, Ernestine Bones of Orlanda, Fla., Verlene Airs of Indiana, Dorothy Henderson of San Antonio, Texas; Sherrie Ann Slone and Delma Eaton, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; Peggy Anderson of Amsterdam, and Freda House of Harrison, and Fay Chinn of Batesville; a sister, Ovel Burwell of Batesville; 31 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
He was pre-ceded in death by his first wife, Nola Wankle Clark; and his wife, Alice Marie Hawkins Clark; three brothers, Marvin Clark, Charlie Clark and David Clark; and a sister, Mary James.
The funeral was held at the First United Pentecostal Church in Batesville with the Rev. M.D. Parmley officiating. Burial followed in Edner Cemetery under the direction of Batesville Funeral Service.
Robert Wells
December 15, 1996
Robert G. Wells, 71, of 37 Lower Lepper Road, Fort Johnson, died Sunday evening at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
Born in Watertown on June 20, 1925, he was the son of Grace Gillson and Edward Solomon Wells. He graduated from Dexter High School and then entered the Navy. He was a chief petty officer on a battle ship which dispatched the first Marines off the coast of Japan after the atom bomb was dropped. After the Navy, he graduated from Canton College in 1948. In 1951, he came to Amsterdam and married Eliza Lansing on Nov. 23, 1951.
Mr. Wells was employed for Agway for 37 years as a electrician, plumber and refrigeration repairman, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Post 701 VFW, Dexter, N.Y. Masonic Lodge. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and bowled in three leagues; Mr. and Mrs. America, Woodchoppers, and the Drop-Outs.
Mr. Wells is survived by his wife of 45 years, three sons, Robert G. Wells II and his wife, Debra, of Amsterdam; Edward Charles Wells and his wife, Cindy of Fultonville; Kelvin J. Wells of Fort Johnson; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta Wells in 1952 a brother, Kenneth Edward Wells in 1993. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Boice Funeral Home, 124 Guy Park Ave., with the Rev. Cal Briggs-Harris officiating.
Cremation will follow at Parkview Crematory in Schenectady.
Burial will take place at a later date.
Calling hours are Tuesday at the Boice Funeral Home, from 2 to 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made in Mr. Wells' memory to GAVAC or to the charity of one's choice.
Richard A. Liszewski
December 17, 1996
Richard A. Liszewski, 73, of 62 Rockton St., Amsterdam, died this morning at the Albany Medical Center Hospital after a short illness.
Born July 30, 1923 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Walter and Josephine (Soltys) Liszewski. He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended St. Stanislaus School and the Amsterdam Vocational and Technical School.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, participating in the China Offensive in Burma and the China Defensive Campaign. He received the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars.
Mr. Liszewski was employed by Mohasco Industries for 17 years and later was employed as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in January of 1986. He then worked part-time for the Amsterdam Printing & Litho Corp.
He was an umpire in the Wee-Men Baseball League for many years and bowled in several area leagues.
Mr. Liszewski was a member of the Polish American Veterans in Amsterdam.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
He married Katherine C. (Collins) Liszewski on Jan. 3, 1948.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard J. Liszewski and Dr. Timothy P. Liszewski, both of Amsterdam; two daughters, Carol Eckert of Clifton Park and Karen Liszewski of Amsterdam; three brothers, Edward Liszewski of Syracuse, Walter of Liszewski of Tully, and Robert Liszewski of Liverpool; seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Winifred Peet, and a brother, Joseph Liszewski.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.
